An accelerated technological tempo is notable in the demand expressions for military product. As performance requirements move toward ever increasing speeds, higher temperatures, higher strength-to-weight ratios, and miniaturization, the industrial complex exhibits a tendency toward specialized manufacture to meet these demands. There is a resultant multiplication in the complexity of the supplier-buyer relationship as a result of this specialization. Further, as new links are added to the chain of events involved between raw material and piece part manufacturing, through components and subcomponent design and manufacture to the complete system level, the communication network becomes correspondingly complex.

This thesis was written with the purpose in mind of bringing together in one place the available data on British capital invested in the cattle industry of the Panhandle-Plains area of West Texas and eastern New Mexico. There seems to have been little awareness in this region of the part played in the development of the Southwest funds from England and Scotland, and so much a study was felt necessary to fill the gap that existed in the history of the cattle industry.

Organizational dynamics is a never-ending process. Change must of necessity beget further change if even the status quo of effectiveness is to be maintained. Personnel procedures and policies that are appropriate for a small organization may not suffice for the large. The expanding unit should subject its personnel policies to detailed periodic examinations. Policies and procedures found to be deficient should be revised and new programs devised to solve the newly-founded problem areas.

Santa Fe had always been the commercial center of northern New Mexico, but after the republic of 1821 succeeded the viceroyalty, trade in that area began to build up. From an annual value of $15,000 in 1831 to about $1,750,000 in 1846, this overland trade eventually developed its own historical heritage and became known as the “Santa Fe Trade.” Since under the new administration merchants were permitted to bring their merchandise from the east, the effort involved in supporting this tremendous supply system became significant in itself, employing over 5,000 men, 1,500 wagons, and more than 17,200 horses, mules, and …
