An Examination Of Potential Training Regression Recognition Algorithms For Pilot Training Next, Alex R. Gaines Mar 2021

An Examination Of Potential Training Regression Recognition Algorithms For Pilot Training Next, Alex R. Gaines

Theses and Dissertations

The initiative to reduce the Air Forces serious pilot shortage lead to the Pilot Training Next (PTN) program. Under PTN, student pilots progress at an individual rate while making increased use of simulator-based training resources. A previous thesis used data from the first PTN class to conceptualize and prototype a student training flight scheduler. This scheduler did not consider training events required to bring students back to achieved levels of performance if in fact that student performance had regressed. This thesis examines three classes of PTN student data to determine whether student regression in training progression can be detected. A …

Usaf Fms Manpower Analysis: Manpower Ratios And Linear Regression, Carlos A. Esguerra

Theses and Dissertations

This research studies the relationships between Air Force Foreign Military Sales (FMS) case factors and manpower authorizations. The Air Force FMS program has seen consistent annual increases in sales since 2017 and average annual growth of 7 percent since 2006. Manpower is a key factor in the continued success of the FMS program. The need to predict future manpower requirements and the lack of prior research in this area motivates this exploratory analysis to determine which FMS case factors are potential candidates to predict manpower needs. An initial comparison analysis of the available FMS case data was conducted, followed by …

Paid Sick Time: An Essential Benefit For All Of Minnesota's Workers, Leah Hanson, Caitlin Kemp, Carrie Leggett

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs

Paid sick time is an essential benefit for all workers in Minnesota. Paid sick time is an economic issue, a public health issue, and an equity issue. Workers should not have to choose between going to work sick or losing a day of pay. Low wage workers, women, Black, Indigenous, people of color, and people living in rural areas are least likely to work at jobs that provide paid sick time. Three cities in Minnesota have implemented paid sick time for workers, along with twelve States and the District of Columbia. It is time for Minnesota to act now and …

Guidance For Building Motivation In Space Operator Training, Foster E. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Services provided by spacecraft, including communications and global positioning, are integral to small businesses, multinational corporations, and the United States Department of Defense. United States rivals recognize the need to undermine the military advantage provided by the space domain and are exploring ways to degrade these services in their warfare doctrine. In response, the United States will need space systems suited to counter these threats and personnel who are trained to respond to the new reality of a contested space environment. This paper also reviews the academic literature and written guidelines for developing motivation in an interactive environment for improving …

Navigating The Murky Middle: Understanding How Career Aspirations And Experiences Influence The Career Progression Of Women Identifying, Student Affairs, Middle Managers, Lindsey Gilmore Mar 2021

Navigating The Murky Middle: Understanding How Career Aspirations And Experiences Influence The Career Progression Of Women Identifying, Student Affairs, Middle Managers, Lindsey Gilmore

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Even though women have made tremendous strides in many facets of education, ascending the administrative and leadership ranks within universities at a proportionate ratio to the number of women who peak as middle managers is not one of them. In the past 40 years, the number of women serving as presidents of universities across the nation has increased less than 10% from 21.1% in 1975 to 30.1% in 2016 (ACE, 2018). If a woman does find herself serving at the helm of an institution, it is more than likely at a “private, liberal arts schools rather than at doctoral granting, …

An Examination Of Civilian Retention In The United States Air Force, William F. Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

The backbone of the United States Air Force is undoubtedly the large civilian workforce that supplements the great work that is accomplished. Many research studies have been conducted on officer and enlisted personnel to ensure that the career fields are properly developed and managed to meet the ever growing demands of the military's varied missions, but no recent studies have focused on the civilian workforce. Striking a balance between new and experienced employees is paramount to success given the ever-changing economic and political landscapes where we find ourselves. The first part of the research uses logistic regression to determine the …

Gratitude, Stephanie Weddington, Megan Paul Feb 2021

Gratitude, Stephanie Weddington, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is gratitude?

There are three ways of thinking about gratitude—as a state, a trait, or a tendency that can be improved through practice. A person can experience a brief state of gratitude in response to a specific event or another person’s kind actions (Emmons & McCullough, 2003). Gratitude is also considered a more enduring personality trait, disposition, or life orientation in which an individual has a general propensity to feel grateful for, notice, and appreciate the positives in day-to-day life (McCullough et al., 2002; Wood et al., 2010). Finally, individuals can enhance their tendency to feel grateful over time …

The Impact Of Covid - 19 On The Student Experience: A Wmu Student Survey And Study, Henry Thiry

Honors Theses

Over the past year it has become clear that the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically changed college students’ everyday lives. Students are less likely to be employed or rely less on wage income and are also less likely to get very ill and die because of COVID-19. Moreover, courses moving online, loss of social connection, and drastic changes in the lives of students’ parents and other family has negatively impacted many students' ability to thrive. In order to measure the impact of COVID-19 on the student experience at Western Michigan University, I conducted a survey of students based on a survey …

Nepotism Concept Evaluation: A Systematic Review And Bibliometric Analysis, Neelam Kaushal, Suman Ghalawat, Rahul Pratap Singh Kaurav Feb 2021

Nepotism Concept Evaluation: A Systematic Review And Bibliometric Analysis, Neelam Kaushal, Suman Ghalawat, Rahul Pratap Singh Kaurav

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

An interdisciplinary approach to the study of nepotism is taken into consideration in this article. Nepotism is one of the least researched and most poorly defined human resource approaches, and it has an enormous effect on companies that hire staff. Different terms, such as Nepotism, Cronyism, and favoritism, have an adverse influence on the company's efficiency and lead to poor performance. From an interdisciplinary viewpoint, organizations often look at nepotism to better represent such policies and practices on companies. The research work identifies significant contributors, recent trends, contexts, and supports in the study field for any further direction. A sample …

Sleep, Megan Paul Feb 2021

Sleep, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is sleep?

In the context of the workplace, investigations into sleep tend to focus on two main aspects: sleep quantity and sleep quality. Though sleep is occasionally measured using objective measures that assess physiological indicators, subjective self-report measures are most often used (Litwiller et al., 2017). There are dozens of measures for assessing sleep quality or quantity, some of which are single items and others that include multiple items. A more commonly used multidimensional measure is the 19-item Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, which assesses factors like sleep duration, sleep disturbance, and sleep efficiency, among others (Buysse et al., 1989). …

The Effects Of Top Management Team National Diversity And Institutional Uncertainty On Subsidiary Csr Focus, Sven Dahms, Suthikorn Suthikorn Kingkaew, Eddy Ng Feb 2021

The Effects Of Top Management Team National Diversity And Institutional Uncertainty On Subsidiary Csr Focus, Sven Dahms, Suthikorn Suthikorn Kingkaew, Eddy Ng

Faculty Journal Articles

This research investigates how top management team national diversity (TMTND) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) institutional uncertainty affect strategic CSR focus in foreign-owned subsidiaries. The paper develops a theoretical framework based on institutional theory and upper echelon perspectives to test a sample of MNE subsidiaries. Survey data were collected from subsidiaries in Thailand and Taiwan. Non-symmetric analysis suggests that while TMTND plays an important role in establishing a CSR focus, it is not conducive in itself to high-performance outcomes. Performance is measured by market share, sales growth, and profitability for each subsidiary. The results also show that there are notable …

Public Service Motivation, Megan Paul Feb 2021

Public Service Motivation, Megan Paul

Umbrella Summaries

What is public service motivation?

Public service motivation (PSM) is defined as “an individual’s predisposition to respond to motives grounded primarily or uniquely in public institutions” (Perry & Wise, 1990). In other words, it is about a person’s desire or interest to serve the public, often in the public sector, but also in the private, non-profit sector. It was developed in response to calls to revive interest in working in government, to restore the country’s faith in public institutions (Perry & Wise, 1990). The goal of the research was to explore whether people had such values and interests and, if …

Mowdoc: A Dataset Of Documents From Taking The Measure Of Work For Building A Latent Semantic Analysis Space, Kim Nimon Feb 2021

Mowdoc: A Dataset Of Documents From Taking The Measure Of Work For Building A Latent Semantic Analysis Space, Kim Nimon

Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction

For organizational researchers employing surveys, understanding the semantic link between and among survey items and responses is key. Researchers like Schwarz (1999) have long understood, for example, that item order can impact survey responses. To account for “item wording similarity,” researchers may allow item error variances to correlate (cf. Rich et al., 2010, p. 625). Other researchers, such as Newman et al. (2010), have pointed to semantic similarity between items as support for the premise that work engagement is like old wine in a new bottle.

Recently, organizational researchers (e.g., Arnulf et al., 2014, 2018) …

Millennials In The Workforce: An Examination Of Motivation And Behavior, Josephine L. Bennett

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In recent years there has been much dialogue about retaining millennials. This dialogue has been fueled by a growing concern over millennial turnover trends. Because millennials have been said to have different work values than previous generations and have demonstrated behaviors outside of what employers describe as “norms” there has been much difficulty with understanding the turnover behavior of this generation. Sourced in motivation theory, this study sought to examine how the turnover intention behavior of millennials is related to rewards, specifically intrinsic and extrinsic rewards. Data from the 2016 Federal Employment Viewpoint Survey was examined to meet the objectives …
