The Costs Of Scholarly Teaching And Learning, Amy M. Goodburn Jan 2000

The Costs Of Scholarly Teaching And Learning, Amy M. Goodburn

Department of English: Faculty Publications

At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) I come to SoTL work from several different locations: As an English professor in composition and rhetoric; as an associate dean for faculty within the College of Arts and Sciences; and as cocoordinator of a faculty teaching development program. This past spring was especially challenging as the country’s economic free-fall led to a year filled of budget-planning exercises, which then turned into budget-cut proposals, and now impending--but still not determined--budget cuts. In many ways, UNL has fared better than most other universities nationwide. The state of Nebraska received national attention when it was named …

Reading Through Galileo's Telescope: Margaret Cavendish And The Experience Of Reading, Elizabeth Spiller Jan 2000

Reading Through Galileo's Telescope: Margaret Cavendish And The Experience Of Reading, Elizabeth Spiller

Department of English: Faculty Publications

This essay reassesses the role of reading in the context of seventeenth-century natural philosophy by analyzing Galileo Galilei’s Starry Messenger and Margaret Cavendish's The Blazing World. The unreliability of telescopic vision becomes a dominant metaphor for the unreliability of reading printed texts. Where Galileo sought to put the reader in his own position as a scientific observer by making reading a form of observation, Cavendish used the telescopic image to show how readers become the makers of their own fictions. From the recognition that reading and observation finally reveal our relationship to the world rather than the world itself comes …

Pengendalian Kata Ganda Dalam Kamus Dewan Dan Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia : Satu Kajian Perbandingan, Ibrahim Ahmad Jan 2000

Pengendalian Kata Ganda Dalam Kamus Dewan Dan Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia : Satu Kajian Perbandingan, Ibrahim Ahmad

Student Works (2000-2009)

This descriptive comparative study is to find out the similarities and differences in the use of reduplication forms in KD and KBBI. The intertext approach in this study chooses KD and KBBJ as they are regarded as the most authoritative and renowned monolingual dictionaries which becomes a main source of references for vocabulary and linguistic inputs. This study is focused on two major aspects, namely the entry status and the meaning description. The entry status deals with the status of the reduplication forms in the dictionary either as a lemma, sublemma, precategories form. phrase, variant, polysemy, or cross-reference. This also …

A Study Of Text Topics Motivate Classroom Reading, Lily Fu Jan 2000

A Study Of Text Topics Motivate Classroom Reading, Lily Fu

Student Works (2000-2009)

In this age of information technology, it is not enough that students know how to read, but more importantly, they must want to read. For without an enthusiasm for reading, students will not read on their own initiative, or read beyond their school assigned texts. This study is an attempt to find out why students do not like reading from their textbook and what they are interested in reading about so that an inventory of reading interests can be drawn up. The purpose of such an inventory is to provide some guidelines to teachers and textbook writers in the selection …

A Discourse Analysis Of Three Malaysian Short Stories, Lalitha Velautham Jan 2000

A Discourse Analysis Of Three Malaysian Short Stories, Lalitha Velautham

Student Works (2000-2009)

This is a study that investigates the nativization of rhetorical strategies in three Malaysian short stories. Based on a framework for the analysis of nativization of rhetorical strategies by Kachru (1986), this study investigates rhetorical strategies such as native similes and metaphors, transfer of rhetorical devices for "personalizing" speech interactions, translation of proverbs and idioms, culturally dependent speech styles and syntactic devices. These strategies are investigated to detennine the types of cultural presuppositions drawn upon by the writer to create innovative linguistic realizations that exist in a non-native English context . The data for this study consists of three short …

A Discourse Analysis Of Electronic Mail Message In A Local Business Community, Yong Kiang Ng Jan 2000

A Discourse Analysis Of Electronic Mail Message In A Local Business Community, Yong Kiang Ng

Student Works (2000-2009)

Communication by electronic mail has become a dominant mode of communication both within and between organisations in the last few years, many of which have developed their own in-house electronic systems. More and more of our students will enter the workforce to find that their job involves using the electronic mail system for communication; therefore we need insights into the nature of this mode of communication, and ascertain ways in which we can assist our students in acquiring "its particular characteristics, in the same way we teach spoken English, writing and the use of telephones" (Murray, 1988: 4). ln light …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

On May 1775, Ethan Alien wrote to the Albany (N.Y.) Committee of Correspondence one of the most exciting letters, not only in this two-volume edition of selected Alien Family correspondence, but arguably in the entire annals of American military and political history. Only the day before, he had led two hundred Vermont and Massachusetts militiamen to capture the British fortress of Ticonderoga in what some consider the colonists' first offensive action of the Revolutionary War. Members of the Second Continental Congress had not yet even convened when Allen demanded the fort's surrender jointly in their name and that of the …

Mediocrity In Paradise: Review Of Mediocrity In Bad Colonists: The South Seas Letters Of Vernon Lee Walker & Louis Becke, Ed. Nicholas Thomas And Richard Eves., Therese Weber

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

It is common for documentary editors to defend the writings with which they are dealing as important in some historical or social sense. If the author of the work is famous, or the document very old, such a defense is easy. For less well known or more recent individuals, the editor will present a case for publication: the style of the writing is remarkable, or the documents bear witness to significant events, or they have value because the writer belonged to a particular, perhaps marginalized, section of society. Nicholas Thomas and Richard Eves, the editors of the letters of Vernon …

Explorations In Class And Gender In The Old South: Review Of The Confessions Of Edward Isham: A Poor White Life Of The South, Ed. Charles C. Bolton And Scott P. Culclasure., James M. Denham Dec 1999

Explorations In Class And Gender In The Old South: Review Of The Confessions Of Edward Isham: A Poor White Life Of The South, Ed. Charles C. Bolton And Scott P. Culclasure., James M. Denham

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The two lives depicted in these accounts represent two dramatically different versions of life in the Old South. As the privileged daughter of a well-to-do slaveholder, Cornelia Jones Pond of Liberty County, Georgia, encountered. none of the hardships and experiences of Edward Isham-who represented a class of people that contemporaries and historians have labeled "poor white." Pond's world was a place of supportive parents, balls, dashing suitors, and loyal servants. Edward Isham's world, on the other hand, was one of bad whiskey, knives, firearms, and poverty. Their lives offer two striking contrasts of white experiences in the antebellum South.

An important primary source for Cherokeer culture, the Brainerd Journal: A Mission to the Cherokees, 1817-1823, is composed of notes written almost daily by two New England missionaries, Cyrus Kingsbury and Ard Hoyt. Their contribution to Cherokee history is valuable because, other than government accounts that parallel this same era, little literature survives about these crucial years preceding forced removal in 1838-39.

Changing The Management Of Change In Language Education: Learning From The Past, Lessons For The Future, Andy Curtis Dec 1999

Changing The Management Of Change In Language Education: Learning From The Past, Lessons For The Future, Andy Curtis

PASAA

Change is a constant, and this may be especially true in the field of education, and in language education in particular. The constancy, magnitude and rate of change all mitigate against a careful consideration of one set of major changes before the next is upon us. This lack of reflection may lead to change occurring, but change more of the 'history repeating itself kind', rather than innovative, positive and lasting change. Approaching the end of this period of history would seem to be an ideal time to stop and take stock of what we have learned about managing change in …

British English Vs. American English: Some Implications For The Thai Users, Vinit Phinit-Akson

PASAA

The English language that is so widely used around the world today is not only an academic language but is also a global or universal language. Not only is English widely used in academic research in many areas but reports on such research are also written and discussed about in English. Moreover, much of the international trade and diplomacy throughout the world is conducted via the English language as media.

Dictation: A Rethink For The Millennium, Reongrudee Soonthornmanee

PASAA

Approaching the millennium has excited people around the world. In the field of language teaching/learning, there is no exception. Teachers are enthusiastic to explore "cutting-edge" themes or "hot" topics in the field in the hope of enriching their profession. As we are looking forward to the new advent of information technology and new methodology, it is also time to reevaluate the resources we have now. A rethink helps us rediscover and enhance our professional strength and growth.

Cross-Cultural Attitudes In Foreign Language Programmers, D. E. Ingram, Shirley O'Neill Dec 1999

Cross-Cultural Attitudes In Foreign Language Programmers, D. E. Ingram, Shirley O'Neill

PASAA

One of the central goals of language education in the global context is the fostering of favourable intercultural attitudes. As the world gets smaller, as communication and interaction between peoples of different races, cultures and language backgrounds increase, so the need for that interaction to be harmonious increases. Most language policies and language syllabuses espouse improved cross-cultural understanding and more favourable cross-cultural attitudes as central goals. Yet there are relatively few empirical studies that demonstrate the effect of language learning on cross-cultural attitudes or identify the variables in the language teaching/learning process that influence cross-cultural attitudes or that can be …

Lt Teachnologies And Methodology In The New Millennium, Ted Rodgers Dec 1999

Lt Teachnologies And Methodology In The New Millennium, Ted Rodgers

PASAA

Millennial Topics are In! It's always an interesting challenge to discuss the future of anything. And this moment provides a particularly rich occasion for prophets, including those who would forecast the future of language teaching. The conservative temptation is to assume that things will carry on pretty much as they have in the past and that the future will be recognizable from clues in the present. After all, haven't classrooms maintained their familiar organization for 1,000 years? Why should methodology alter radically if the classroom stays the same?

Future Directions For Pronunciation Teaching: Intelligibility, Content, And Oral Communication, John M. Levis Dec 1999

Future Directions For Pronunciation Teaching: Intelligibility, Content, And Oral Communication, John M. Levis

PASAA

Although pronunciation has become an important component of a communicative approach to language teaching, the development of pronunciation research and teaching is faced with three important, unresolved issues. First, pronunciation theory and practice suffers from a poorly developed understanding of intelligibility, a weakness which stunts significant progress in research and teaching. Second, the widely accepted belief that suprasegmentals such as stress, rhythm and intonation are more important in intelligibility than vowel and consonant sounds is overly simplistic and should be more carefully examined. Finally, while the integration of pronunciation and oral communication curricula is critically important, attempts to integrate have …

At The Turn Of The Millennium: Communication Technology And Elt, Anil Pathak Dec 1999

At The Turn Of The Millennium: Communication Technology And Elt, Anil Pathak

PASAA

This paper argues the need for pedagogic change reflecting the communication technology revolution. It has been argued that the present curricula in Communication Skills should undergo vital changes to cater to the training needs of a developing community. The gap perceived in the potential of the communication technology and its use is significantly wide, and the communication skills training professionals have a critical role to play towards bridging this gap. The desired changes would radically alter not only the teaching methods, teaching materials and assessment patterns but also the fundamental approaches to syllabus development systems.

The Psychological Atmosphere We Create In Our Classrooms, Adrian Underhill Dec 1999

The Psychological Atmosphere We Create In Our Classrooms, Adrian Underhill

PASAA

It has been said that "we teach what we are" or even that "we teach what is going on in us at the moment" (Postman & Weingartner, 1969). These provocative statements seem to suggest that the way we are in our classes, the way we feel, think and behave while teaching, can have an effect on our learners every bit as important as the materials and techniques we use and the syllabus that guides us.

Concentrated Language Encounter Teaching Program: Elt In The New Millennium, Saowalak Rattanavich

PASAA

Whenever we approach the turn of a new century, we eagerly await the innovations that offer new challenges, both positive and negative. Certainly, there will be a higher level of communication as a result of the advances in technology that will emerge in the new century. On the negative side, there will be the worry of higher competition (which will result in a widening gap in living standards between the rich and the poor) increasing violence, population growth, unequal food distribution, globalization v.s. regionalism and fragmentation, environmental deterioration, and loss of cultural values.

Reading Space As Time In Great Plains Recollective Architecture, Paul A. Olson Oct 1999

Reading Space As Time In Great Plains Recollective Architecture, Paul A. Olson

Department of English: Faculty Publications

It is a long way from Black Elk's tipi to the Stuart building. Clearly most cultures and periods impose one or more narrative plots on time and space (I have written of four that were part of the recent past of this state). It may be that we will need soon to return again to a celebration of the cyclical in our architecture. If the ethos of domination that goes with linear, progressive notions of time is as destructive to our environment as the Club of Rome (and other successor study groups looking at the future of the planet) have …
