Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng Jul 2001

Peer Assessment Of Oral Presentations: What These Two Cases Tell Us, Anil Pathak, Chan Soon Keng

PASAA

This paper explores the use of peer assessments of oral presentations in teaching and evaluation. The experiment was conducted on undergraduate and graduate university students of communication courses. While the undergraduates were asked to evaluate their peers' oral presentations using a rather structured assessment sheet, the graduate students used a relatively open feedback sheet. A comparison was made between the peer ratings and teacher ratings. It was found that the graduate students differed significantly from the teachers' ratings and other peer ratings. The undergraduates, however, displayed a tendency towards uniformity and towards a broad agreement with the teacher ratings. The …

University Elt Faculty's Use Of It, Their Opinions On The Roles Of It And The Promising Tasks, Phan Banpho

PASAA

The rise and spread of information technology (IT) is widely recognized. However, whether ELT faculty members at leading state universities in Bangkok and their campuses in the vicinity of Bangkok have adopted IT in their teaching has never been addressed. The purposes of this study were to investigate these ELT lecturers' use of IT and to explore their opinions on the role of IT and the computer-related tasks they considered necessary in the new millennium. A sample of 150 lecturers from six leading universities in Bangkok participated in the study. The research instrument was a questionnaire for eliciting the faculty …

Globalization Through Distance Education Via Inter- And Intranet Pedagogy, Kanchana Prapphal Jul 2001

Globalization Through Distance Education Via Inter- And Intranet Pedagogy, Kanchana Prapphal

PASAA

This paper advocates the important role of English language teaching in preparing students to succeed in the era of globalization which can be accomplished through distance education via Inter- and Intranet Pedagogy. The following key elements in this approach of language teaching and learning are discussed: syliabus, materials, tasks and activities, testing and evaluation, and the roles of teachers and students. As regards the design of the syllabus, the readiness of infrastructure, the training of net teachers and the readiness of the students have to be taken into account. Materials for the "global classroom" should include both teaching and learning …

Learning English Though Songs, Subhasinee Rajhandaraks

PASAA

Out of the four skills of English, it would seem rather convincing to state that listening is the one that foreign students practise least. The why and wherefore is that most EFL instructors tend to pay more attention to linguistic competence, an approach which is reflected in the use of grammar-based materials. In addition, being trapped in the traditional approach of teaching English, instructors are more likely to concentrate on reading and writing rather than speaking and listening. Lastly, when students leave the classroom, there are few opportunities to listen to English. However, there is a cunningly lighthearted solution. Here, …

Dollars And Sense In Collaborative Digital Scholarship: The Example Of The Walt Whitman Hypertext Archive, Kenneth M. Price

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

One of the great advantages of the web is that there's a bunch of free stuff-that's the truism, anyway. But free stuff comes from somewhere, and it is rarely, if ever, free to produce. I am interested in exploring some of the costs of digital work, using as an example The Walt Whitman Hypertext Archive, a project I co-direct with Ed Folsom Since 1995, many people, myself included, have described our site as free, yet a considerable amount of resources continue to go into its making. I want to explore that conundrum.

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys Jun 2001

Hypertextile Scholarship: Digitally Editing The Bayeux Tapestry, Martin Kennedy Foys

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The dilemma of studying the Tapestry is twofold. In traditional editions of the textile, the discursive limits of the printed page require either a sacrifice of narrative fluidity for detailed resolution, or the converse. Put another way, in a printed edition, "readers" of the Tapestry either are given the document in gloriously detailed, high-resolution plates that fragment the textile's continuity, or are faced with small-scale reproductions that capture large narrative blocks but lack any comprehensive magnified detail. Additionally, since its rediscovery in the 1720s and like any complex and canonical narrative expression, the Tapestry has generated hundreds of scholarly books …

Editing Dead Reptiles: The Tebtunis Papyri At The University Of California, Berkeley, Anthony Bliss Jun 2001

Editing Dead Reptiles: The Tebtunis Papyri At The University Of California, Berkeley, Anthony Bliss

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

I am a curator, but some of my best friends are editors. I mostly edit myself. My collecting responsibilities cover roughly four thousand years of written history, so sometimes my focus is a little blurry. My own training harks back to the McKerrow-Greg-Bowers school of textual editing, but none of these three great editors prepared me for the challenge of handling thousands of papyri.

The Other Millennium: Review Of Yesterdays Future: The Twentieth Century Begins. Michael E. Stevens, Ed., George W. Geib

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The widespread public interest and accompanying media hype surrounding the millennium celebrations of December 31, 1999, produced several interesting projects among historians and documentary editors. One of those is this slender volume, published in 1999 by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Yesterday's Future uses the pen and eye of the print media of a century ago to look at one state's responses to the coming of a new century. Intended as part of a series, "Voices of the Wisconsin Past," the book is a selection of nearly one hundred reports and opinions offered to Wisconsin newspaper readers a hundred …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) painted more self-portraits than did any other American artist of his generation. Between the outset of his career in the 1760s and his death in 1827, Peale depicted himself no fewer than twenty times. He cast himself in oil paints, clay, and wax; in miniature, half-length, and life-size; alone, with family, and with strangers; and as a soldier, husband, father, scientist, and painter. dearly, autobiography held an abiding interest for Peale. There is no better demonstration of this than The Artist in His Museum, a monumental painting commissioned by the trustees of Peale's Museum in 1822 …

Two Hundred Years Of Acquiring The Fifty Years Of The Colonial Records Of Georgia: A Chapter In Failure In Historical Publication, Robert Scott Davis Jr. Mar 2001

Two Hundred Years Of Acquiring The Fifty Years Of The Colonial Records Of Georgia: A Chapter In Failure In Historical Publication, Robert Scott Davis Jr.

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

In 1799, Georgia made the earliest attempt of any state to obtain copies of its colonial records from Europe. The history of its subsequent efforts to obtain and publish this earliest documentation well represents the problems and attempted solutions made by the many other such projects in the two centuries that followed. After all of the efforts to make its colonial records accessible, the state still does not have . a complete and credible publication of these records, and this goal remains elusive.

Part of the difficulty stems from decisions on editing, problems that originated in the acquisition of copies …

Wordsworth Senex: Review Of The Cornell Wordsworth: Last Poems, 1821-1850, Ed. Jared Curtis, With Associate Eds. April Lea Denny-Ferris And Jillian Heydt-Stevenson., Donald H. Reiman

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

The Cornell Wordsworth is one of the most ambitious and, on the whole, one of the most successful multi-volume literary editions of our time. Nearly forty years ago, General Editor Stephen M. Parrish and other senior Wordsworthians conceived the project as a way to rescue the reputation of William Wordsworth (WW) from what they regarded as his mistaken tendency to age his poems as though they were fine wine by repeatedly revising them (some for . nineteen years or more) before he finally released them for publication. An original aim of the Cornell Wordsworth was, therefore, to make available from …

Nhprc November Meeting

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

At its November 14, 2000, meeting, the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) recommended grants totaling up to $3.8 million for 47 projects. The Commission described competition for funding as "fierce," with requests under consideration at this meeting exceeding $8 million. While reaffirmning its support for the Founding Era documentary editions, the Commission noted a substantial increase in the number and quality of grant proposals in the State Board and Electronic Records Programs. The Commission was able to maintain last year's level of funding for the Founding Era documentary editing projects. However, the NHPRC Fellowship Programs in Archival Administration …

A Trove Of New Works By Thomas Pynchon? Bomarc Service News Rediscovered, Adrian S. Wisnicki

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Early in 1960, after having graduated from Cornell and while writing V., Thomas Pynchon moved to Seattle and began working for the Boeing Airplane Company. What Pynchon did while working at Boeing has puzzled scholars almost from the moment of the very private author's literary debut. When we try to delve into his stint at Boeing first mentioned by Lewis Nichols and Dick Schaap--we reach dead ends or find conflicting information. Yet Pynchon's time at Boeing is perhaps the most documented period of his life, and over the years a number of interesting (though not always accurate) bits of information …

Chinese characters evolve from ideographic writing. They in fact originated from ancient pictographics. According to Liu Shu, an ancient document on Chinese characters, Chinese characters can be divided into six categories, namely, imitative drafts, indicative symbols, logical aggregates, phonetic complexes, false borrowing and mutually explanatory. Of these six types of Chinese characters, the phonetic complexes category is the most significant. This form of characters is made up of two main components, namely, the radical component and the phonetic series component. This group of Chinese characters makes up over ninety percent or about sixty thousand words of the entire corpus of …

Buku-Buku Sastera Terbitan Dbp Sarawak 1988-1998 : Penerimaan Dan Kedudukannya Di Sarawak, Hazami Jahari

Student Works (2000-2009)

The community's interest towards literature is seen to be on the decline. Neither do they seem to understand nor appreciate the significance of literature in molding the ways of thoughts of the people. This is due to the ever increasing cost of living, wide range of entertainment media and the government policy. The role and significance of literature no longer becomes predominant. Thus this study aims at reassessing the status of literature in the daily life of the community, especially the students and teachers of secondary schools in Sarawak. The methods being applied are through questionnaires focusing on the statistics …

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood Dec 2000

Collaborative Learning: Principles, Practice And Potential In The English Language Classroom, William Littlewood

PASAA

Students across a wide range of countries (including Thailand) express their liking for classroom learning activities in which they work purposefully in groups in order to achieve common goals. This mode of learning also lies at the heart of the philosophy and techniques of "collaborative learning." This paper presents briefly the principles which underlie collaborative learning. It describes a range of strategies and techniques which teachers can use in order to organize collaborative learning. Finally, it discusses how collaborative learning tasks fit into an overall framework for language learning and how they relate to the development of learner autonomy.
