Measuring A Textbook Against The Thai Foundation English Course Goals And Standards
Measuring A Textbook Against The Thai Foundation English Course Goals And Standards
PASAA
Presumably because few textbooks on their own cover what is officially expected in Thai university English foundation courses, the option of selecting more than one textbook is often taken. Not only does this add to student expenses but it also makes achieving the two official goals and seven associated standards set for these courses all the more difficult. This review therefore looks at a recently published textbook that Thai universities might consider adopting as a foundation English text measuring it against these goals and standards. The text which was selected to do this with is Natural English Upper-intermediate published by …

Organization, Outreach, And Optimism: Getting A Project Up To Full Speed, Kate Culkin
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The Harriet Jacobs Papers began as an offshoot of Jean Fagan Yellin's research for a biography of Jacobs and her edited edition of Incidents. For several years, work on the papers project was sporadic, as Dr. Yellin and a series of undergraduate and graduate students surveyed archives for material, accessioned and transcribed documents, and began research on the annotations. The pace changed dramatically in the summer of 2002 when the project received funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Gladys Kriebel Delmas Foundation and secured a contract to publish the book with the University of North Carolina …

Finding And Creating Possibility: Reading In The Lives Of Lesbian, Bisexual And Queer Young Women, Paulette Rothbauer
Data and Test Instruments
This study examines the voluntary reading practices of self-identified lesbian, bisexual and queer young women between the ages of 18 and 23 years. The practices associated with voluntary reading including finding, borrowing, buying, reading, sharing and talking about texts, especially those that fall into the genre of lesbian and gay literature, comprise the central theme of this study. Data collection and analysis were guided by principles of qualitative, interpretivist inquiry. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with seventeen young women in London and Toronto, Ontario. Three main themes related to reading emerged from analysis of interview transcripts. The first of these …

The Internet In The Reading Accounts Of Lesbian And Queer Young Women: Failed Searches And Unsanctioned Reading, Paulette Rothbauer
Data and Test Instruments
In my dissertation research (Rothbauer 2004a), I explore the role of voluntary reading in the lives of self-identified lesbian or queer young women (18–23 years). The larger context of this inquiry concerns the negotiation of diverse meanings of alternative sexualities constructed by young people through the consumption of a range of self-selected reading materials, including lesbian and gay literature. Data collection and analysis were guided by qualitative principles of interpretive and reflexive research, and data are taken primarily from conversational interviews with 17 young women, conducted between November 2001 and February 2003. One area of significant findings encompasses the uses …

"People Aren't Afraid Anymore, But It's Hard To Find Books": Reading Practices That Inform The Personal And Social Identities Of Self-Identified Lesbian And Queer Young Women, Paulette Rothbauer
Data and Test Instruments
A presentation of my doctoral research, in which I examine reading as a taken-for-granted and under-studied aspect of information seeking and information use. Specifically, I look at the role of voluntary reading in the negotiation of alternative sexual identities amongst young women (18-23 years of age) who self-identify as lesbian, queer, or bisexual.

A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern
A Unique Perspective: Documentary Editors And Biography, David B. Mattern
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Documentary editors are attracted to and often bemused and irritated by biography (and biographers). They have a unique perspective on this genre that I'm going to explore through the prism of my own experience as a biographer and a documentary editor. I've been an editor for nearly twenty years and in that time have written or collaborated on four biographical projects-a biography of Revolutionary War general Benjamin Lincoln, a selected letters edition of Dolley Payne Madison, and two children's biographies of Dolley and James Madison.

The Future Of University Presses, Janet Rabinowitch
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The "future of university presses" is an open-ended topic, and I don't pretend to be a crystal ball gazer, so I will focus my remarks more directly on trends and issues that are currently preoccupying my university press colleagues, developments that will have a strong influence on what our future is likely to be.

Susan Rosowski, Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died on November 2, 2004, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Professor Rosowski was general editor of the Willa Cather Scholarly Edition, director of the Cather Project and the Cather International Seminar, and editor-in-chief of Cather Studies. She was the major force in creating and sustaining all of them. Over some twenty years, she was instrumental in securing Cather's place as a major twentieth century author. She won the University's highest awards for both teaching and scholarship, a rare achievement, and her professional life modeled …

Paul Laurence Who? Invisibility And Misrepresentation In Children's Literature And Language Arts Textbooks, Mary Jackson Scroggins, Jane M. Gangi
Education Faculty Publications
This article is a call-and-response-type conversation between two women—educators, mothers, lovers of words—on the representation of books about children of color in literature and language arts textbooks for preservice teachers. Scroggins shares anecdotes on the experience and real-life effects of invisibility, misrepresentation, and underrepresentation; her comments are italicized. Gangi reviews select textbooks and booklists. Both comment on the state of multiculturalism in children's literature.

Stimulating Moral Reasoning In Children Through Situational Learning And Children’S Literature, Nancy P. Gallavan, Jennifer L. Fabbi
Stimulating Moral Reasoning In Children Through Situational Learning And Children’S Literature, Nancy P. Gallavan, Jennifer L. Fabbi
Library Faculty Research
In any elementary school classroom, a teacher will occasionally observe students involved in activities that seem neither honest nor ethical. What can teachers do to stimulate moral reasoning skills and principled attitudes in the elementary grades? This article suggests that situational learning is ideal for developing moral reasoning in today's young learners. Situational learning allows students to choose their own situations and structure personalized outcomes that may or may not be predicted by the teacher. There are no right and wrong answers or anticipated outcomes; the process entails risk-taking and uncertainty, for teacher and students alike. Situational learning permits individuals …

The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski
The Editor As Biographer, John P. Kaminski
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Editors are really biographers of sorts almost all the time when editing ~ the papers of their subjects. All meaningful characters who appear in documentary editions are usually identified in footnotes and head notes, biographical directories, introductions, and sometimes even in indexes. No one knows the subject-the person being studied-as well as the documentary editor. Day in and day out editors pore over their documents intently, attempting to make sense of the interrelationships among all the historical participants. As part of their responsibility, editors explain the intricacies and uncertainties in these relationships.

This research investigated the use of the computer in developing reading abilities, including speed reading and reading comprehension. In this study, 99 students from the Faculty of Commerce and Accountancy were trained in speed reading using a computer program in English. The program contained activities aimed at increasing reading speed such as eye movement, timed reading and paced reading. The performance of these students in speed reading, comprehension and general English proficiency pretests and post-tests was compared with that of students who did not take part in the training. The results show significant gains in the reading rates of the …
