George C. Marshall And The "Squeakings Of Democracy", Larry I. Bland
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Given the all-pervasive nature of World War II's impact on American society, scores of socio-cultural history topics might profitably be studied using the published papers of U.S. Army Chief of Staff George Catlett Marshall. Examples of the kinds of issues Marshall had to deal with include where, how, and with what the United States should fight; the role of women in the war effort; racial segregation and social mores in the army and surrounding its camps; who was required to fight, why they did so, and what they got out of doing it; who was permitted to become an officer; …

More Than "Rum, Buggery, And The Lash": Social History In American Naval Documents, Michael J. Crawford
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
This essay, however, charts a course to some neglected aspects of the social history of the American sailing navy and urges social historians to cruise in less frequented seas. These aspects include: women; hygiene; patronage of officers toward warrant and petty officers and ratings; and the life-course of warrant and petty officers.

Storytelling And Story Reading: A Comparison Of Effects On Children's Memory And Story Comprehension., Matthew P. Gallets
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For years, storytellers have been going to schools to share stories with children. However, to date only limited research has been done on the effects of storytelling on children’s learning. This project was part of an ongoing study involving several researchers. In this portion of the project, the effects of storytelling and story reading were compared. The population studied consisted of kindergarten, first, and second grade students. Half the students were read stories aloud, the other half were told the same stories by a storyteller. Data were collected regarding students ability to recall facts they had heard, as well as …

Archival Code-Breaking: The Editor's Dilemma, Candace Falk
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I became the editor of the Emma Goldman Papers while I was writing Love, Anarchy, and Emma Goldman-a biography in which the first codes broken were those of decorum. There was a kind of steamy delight on that day when I realized that the secret language in her love letters-the "m's", the "tb", and the "w" -were not the Yiddish words I imagined them to be, nor the clandestine political messages, but a playful way to dodge the Comstock law against sending obscenity through the mail. Sizzling epistles went back and forth between Emma Goldman and Ben Reitman, a man …

Sanitized For Your Protection: Editing Classified Documents, Daun Van Ee
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I started having second thoughts about giving a paper on the subject of working with classified documents almost as soon as I agreed to do it. In the first place, I'm not editing classified documents-or any kind of documents, for that matter-now. I used to, though: for over a quarter of a century I edited the papers of Dwight David Eisenhower at Johns Hopkins University. My duties there included handling all matters of classification and declassification, as well as physical, personnel, and information security.
Four years ago, as we were proofreading the index for the final set of Eisenhower volumes, …

Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole
Reading In The Future: Literacy And The Time Of The Internet, David R. Cole
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
David R. Cole's Reading in the Future: Literacy and the Time of the Internet locates the literacies of the internet -- itself read as the end game of western technology or the Machina Mundi, the Great Chain of the World that has a centre that is everywhere and a circumference that is nowhere -- in a contradictory space. But Cole also self-consciously locates his own writing at a moment in time when the initial technological hype of the internet is subsiding in the face of the boredom of informational overload and the internet is emerging as both an unlimited …

Cultural Awareness And Second Language Acquisition: An Investigation Of Thai Learners, Will Baker
Cultural Awareness And Second Language Acquisition: An Investigation Of Thai Learners, Will Baker
PASAA
The aim of this study was to identify connections between culture, in particular cultural awareness, and second language acquisition (SLA). A number of socio-cultural models of SLA were utilized in the design of the research. Most significantly was the Socio-Education Model (Gardner and MacIntyre, 1993a), which emphasizes the crucial, although indirect, role context and culturally influenced factors play in SLA. A questionnaire was administered to 100 undergraduate English students at a Thai university. The subjects were asked to report on their attitudes and behavior regarding cultural awareness, orientation/motivation, attitudes towards English and Thai culture, people and language, and culturally significant …

Teacher Intervention During The Writing Process: An Alternative To Providing Teacher Feedback On Efl Academic Writing In Large Classes, Kriengsukdi Syananondh, Watana Padgate
PASAA
Providing written feedback is often burdensome and time-consuming for teachers, especially in large classes. This quasi-experimental study was conducted to test an alternative to giving teacher feedback in large EFL classes, i.e. employing teacher intervention during the writing process. The subjects were undergraduates taking a writing course at a Thai university. Two intact groups were employed, one assigned to be a control group and the other an experimental group. The control group finished their draft, submitted it to the teacher, and received individual written feedback while in the experimental group the teacher intervened in the writing process by giving explanations …

A Contrastive Analysis Of Adverbs In English And Thai And Its Implications On Language Teaching, Aekpong Rungnaphawet
PASAA
This article presents a contrastive analysis of adverbs in English and Thai, focusing on how morphological and syntactic features of adverbs in Thai may interfere Thai learners in using derivational adverbs in the English language. It postulates that due to different derivational processes of adverbs in the two languages. L1 interference may be found with regards to forms, functions, and positions, and a combination of these in particular. In terms of derivation, adverbs in English are morphologically devided, whereas those in Thai are lexemically derived. These influence their modificational functions in a sentence, which eventually affect their transmobility. That is, …

From the more than 13,000 documents that have been collected for this series, letters have been chosen for publication that throw light on the working of both houses, that describe the social and political views of the members, incoming letters that express cogent views and inform …

Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz
Teacher Education And Critical Inquiry : The Use Of Activity Theory In Exploring Alternative Understandings Of Language And Literature, Brenton Doecke, Alex Kostogriz
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This article explores the challenges of espousing a critical pedagogy within the managerial climate that presently shapes teacher education. Current discourses of professionalism are incommensurate with an understanding of the way that literacy practices are grounded in the social worlds in which both school and university students operate. Such discourses construct graduate teachers as the providers of decontextualised literacy skills to school students whose existing communication networks are ignored. We argue that an alternative understanding of professional practice can be developed by focusing on the textual resources university students use to mediate their learning, and by locating their emerging professional …

The research in this project shows that spelling needs to be taught through patterns, rhymes and the use of analogies. Additionally, spelling needs to be taught within writing, not as a completely separate subject.

This project takes a selection of children's books that encourage feelings of love, respect, and concern for the environment, and pairs them with an array of activities that put children more in touch with our planet and its problems. This combination of shared stories and related activities may be influential in developing environmental sensitivity in young children.

Teaching Vocabulary Through Integrated Curriculum Improves Reading Comprehension, Linda Carol Cox
Theses Digitization Project
This investigation was designed to determine if teaching vocabulary through integrating English and Social Studies curricula would provide tenth grade students who are poor readers with strategies to improve their reading comprehension. The strategies used were designed to support struggling readers and English language development students to connect denotative and connotative meanings of words found in the novel Animal Farm to their social studies class' content.
