Review Of The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume I, 1805–1813 And The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Volume Ii, 1814–1821. Edited And With An Introduction By Rowena Mcclinton; Preface By Chad Smith., Angela Pulley Hudson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Noted historian William G. McLoughlin once observed that in addition to mirroring U.S. political structures, the nineteenth-century Cherokee Nation shared two other trends with the young Republic: slavery and Christianity.1 Indeed, even as Cherokee people fought to retain their eastern lands in the first decades of the nineteenth century, they often adopted the ideologies of the land-hungry Americans they tried to resist. Few sources document this complex and contradictory process more vividly than The Moravian Springplace Mission to the Cherokees. Rarely do Cherokee, Christian, and slave histories appear in such intimate relation to one another. In the secondary works on …

In The Beginning: Ade And The Big Bang Revolution, Roger Burns
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
Welcome to the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the Association for Documentary Editing. Some people have compared the origins of the ADE with the American Revolution. Others have linked it to the big bang theory. I prefer to think of it as a Big Bang Revolution. Anyway, today you will get a little of the inside story of the creation of ADE. You see, I was there. And with me today are three individuals who have joined the ADE at different times in its history. Charlene Bickford, editor of the First Congress Project, who was also …

Digital Editions: Scholarly Tradition In An Avant-Garde Medium, Andrew Jewell
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I come to you from the digital world. I am president of the Digital Americanists; I recently received a Digital Humanities Start-Up grant; I edit a digital archive on the life and work of Willa Cather; I am a faculty fellow at the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities; and I even have the word “digital” in my official job title: Assistant Professor of Digital Projects. I don’t begin this way in order to impress you with my credentials, but as a confession: my current professional identity is absolutely entangled with the digital medium. That said, I want to …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
As experienced editors, we sometimes see change as a negative—complaining about the paucity of funding, or about the new requirements that digital publishing has forced on our projects. But when you meet so many enthusiastic newcomers, it is hard to remain a pessimist. We have made great strides in the last thirty years, bringing our editions to a far broader segment of the public than the founders of ADE had ever thought possible. We have honed our practices, paving the way for new editors to follow using our publications in microfilm, book, and digital format as examples of best practices, a massive …

A Bibliography Of Editions Prepared By Ade Members, Karen Mylan, Linnéa Caproni, Harriet Simon, Richard Leffler
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The following is a listing of the many editions and volumes that have been published by members of the ADE. Each edition contains at least one editor, and usually more, who is or has been a member of the Association. It is a remarkable record of scholarly productivity in a wide range of disciplines. These many volumes, microfilms, microfiche, and electronic editions have added greatly to the resources available to scholars and laymen alike. It should also be noted that this list is incomplete. There are many other editions that have escaped the attention of those who prepared this list.
Review Of The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, Volume I: The Human Rights Years, 1945–1948; Allida M. Black, Editor; John F. Sears And Mary Jo Binker, Associate Editors; Craig Daigle And Michael Weeks, Assistant Editors, And Christopher Alhambra, Electronic Editor, Kathlleen Dalton
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The publication of the first volume of the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project (ERPP), edited by Allida Black and her associates at George Washington University, is an event of the utmost significance to documentary editors and historians alike. Nothing like this pathbreaking volume exists in the ER literature, and this resource will forever change the research landscape. This volume stands for documentary editing at its best, and the larger ERPP itself, with its informative website and teacher training workshops, is a model of the highest editorial scholarship applied innovatively to the mission of public education.
Review Of Emma Goldman: A Documentary History Of The American Years, Volume One: Made For America, 1890–1901 And Emma Goldman: A Documentary History Of The American Years, Volume Two: Making Speech Free, 1902–1909. Edited By Candace Falk; Barry Pateman, Associate Editor; Jessica M. Moran, Assistant Editor., Nancy Marie Robertson
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
For more than a quarter of a century, Candace Falk and her comrades at the Emma Goldman Papers Project (EGPP) have worked to make the records of the turn-of the-century anarchist, lecturer, and social critic available. With the assistance of the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), they joined with papers projects for Jane Addams, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, and Margaret Sanger to form the Consortium for Women’s History, part of an effort to diversify the people represented in historical editing projects. Funded by individual contributions as well as support from NHPRC and the National Endowment for …
Association For Documentary Editing 2008–9 Annual Plan
Association For Documentary Editing 2008–9 Annual Plan
Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
The ADE is at an important crossroads. Much has changed in the documentary editing profession in the past three decades. New methods of publication have emerged; the era of the large projects is diminishing; and the number of users of published historical documents has exploded as a result of the Web. Many more people are engaged in the practices that we call documentary editing (the selection, transcription, and explication of documents), but these same individuals don’t define their work or their profession as such. Scholars use new and changing tools to produce their work in ways that weren’t imaginable when …
Chaos Is The Poetry: From Outcomes To Inquiry In Service-Learning Pedagogy, Shari J. Stenberg, Darby Arant Whealy
Chaos Is The Poetry: From Outcomes To Inquiry In Service-Learning Pedagogy, Shari J. Stenberg, Darby Arant Whealy
Department of English: Faculty Publications
It is no secret that the contemporary university values a model of efficiency, of tangible, quantifiable outcomes. Jan Currie and Lesley Vidovich (qtd. in Downing, Hurlbert, Mathieu 9) contend that since the 1980s, the boundaries between higher education, government, and business have largely deteriorated, and business discourse of "excellence" has come to dominate university culture. Consequently, output, outcomes, and efficiency are valorized over and above process, inquiry, and the inevitable tensions of learning. Stanley Aronowitz puts it this way: "[A]cademic leaders chant the mantra of excellence . . . [which] means ... all parts of the university 'perform' and are …

Featuring Historical Textbooks To Build Knowledge Of University History, Bette Rathe, Kay E. Lowell
University Libraries Publications
Undergraduate students at a teacher education institution, the University of Northern Colorado, are the target audience for an exhibit of a reading series from the Libraries’ Archival Services collections. The display highlights an important era in the university’s history involving four faculty members: Paul McKee, M. Lucile Harrison, Annie McCowen, and Elizabeth Lehr. These professors developed an innovative approach to early reading instruction that was incorporated into their reading textbook series during a time of uniformity in reading textbooks. The rationale for the display was based on research about the Reading for Meaning series discussed in this article.

The Relationship Between Vocabulary Development, Low Socioeconomic Status, And Teacher Discourse, Amy M. Pritts
The Relationship Between Vocabulary Development, Low Socioeconomic Status, And Teacher Discourse, Amy M. Pritts
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Elementary students from low socioeconomic households often begin and remain behind other socioeconomic groups in vocabulary knowledge. Many reasons for this gap, including cognitive, environmental, and educational, have been researched. The current study examined the relationship between vocabulary knowledge, socioeconomic status, and type of teacher discourse within an early elementary setting not yet explored within the research. This concurrent mixed-method research study investigated this relationship using study groups, taped classroom lessons, and the DIBELS word use fluency assessment measure. Interpretative analysis was used for the qualitative data, and correlational analysis was used to determine relationships between the discourse types and …
Extensive Reading And Its Potential In Assisting Low-Ability Efl Learners To Increase Their Reading Comprehension And Motivation, Wilairat Kirin, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi
Extensive Reading And Its Potential In Assisting Low-Ability Efl Learners To Increase Their Reading Comprehension And Motivation, Wilairat Kirin, Punchalee Wasanasomsithi
PASAA
Reading comprehensible texts is referred to by Krashen (2005) as representing a bridge to heavier reading such as journal and magazine features or academic texts as it helps provide competency that is crucial to facilitate comprehension. Reading such texts extensively has also been reported repetitively by substantial research, both in ESL and EFL contexts, as contributing to the enhancement of reading ability and, particularly, motivation to continue the reading engagement. This paper reports on findings from an experiment with low-ability Thai undergraduate students and discusses whether the claims made about extensive reading (ER) and its existing knowledge are applicable in …

The Relationship Between The Chulalongkorn University Students' Ability To Identify Stress Patterns Of English Polysyllabic Medical Terms And The Ability To Pronounce Them, Satita Watanapokakul
PASAA
Word stress, especially for terminologies like medical terms, has been of great concern among EFL instructors for many years, and EFL students find it difficult to get the correct pronunciation due to the polysyllabic nature of most medical terms. This study has three main objectives: to explore the CU medical students' problems in marking stress in English polysyllabic medical terms; to find out the relationship between the students' ability to identify stress patterns of English polysyllabic medical terms and the ability to pronounce them; and to investigate students' opinions on the word-stress marking in English polysyllabic medical terms. The participants …

What Does Focus-On-Form Journal Writing Tell Language Teachers?, Walaipun Puengpipattrakul
PASAA
This research study employed the contemporary focus-on-form approach blending grammar instruction and communicative language teaching by means of journal writing to maximize language learners' grammatical ability in formal education. This research study aimed to (a) investigate the effects of journal writing on grammatical ability of the undergraduates and within the groups of highand low-achievers and (b) explore the undergraduates' opinions toward the use of journal writing as a means to improve grammatical ability. The triangulated study, employing the mixed-quantitative and qualitative- methods, was conducted in Thailand on 32 first-year Thai university undergraduates' scores in the grammatical test of verbal tenses, …
Using Focus Groups In Language Research, Arthur Mcneill
Using Focus Groups In Language Research, Arthur Mcneill
PASAA
This paper examines the potential of the focus group as a research method in language studies. In social sciences research, focus groups are becoming increasingly popular as a means of gathering data. It is logical to anticipate that the focus group can also be a suitable research method for investigating certain topics related to language. The paper describes how focus groups are typically organized and run, then addresses some of the on-going concerns about the handling of focus group data. Provided certain safeguards are in place concerning data analysis and provided the procedures for handling data are made as explicit …
Perceptions Of Recess And The Effects Of A Morning Recess Break On The Oral Reading Fluency Of Second Grade Students, Joy M. Walker
Perceptions Of Recess And The Effects Of A Morning Recess Break On The Oral Reading Fluency Of Second Grade Students, Joy M. Walker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A recent trend in schools has been to reduce or eliminate recess. The assumption behind this elimination is that less recess time provides more opportunities for learning and hence, better learning outcomes. However, little research has examined the effects of this assumption, and little is known about the relationship between recess and learning. The purpose of this mixed method quasi-experimental study was to test the massed versus distributed practice theory and the cognitive immaturity theory, and to gain a better understanding of recess and its implications for learning. The quantitative question was designed to determine whether segmenting instructional time with …
Mexican-American Concepts On Gender And Identity: A Teacher's Perspective In A Fifth Grade Classroom, Cynthia Soto
Mexican-American Concepts On Gender And Identity: A Teacher's Perspective In A Fifth Grade Classroom, Cynthia Soto
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
This study primarily focuses on fifth-grade Mexican-American students and the factors that influence their views on gender and identity. Gender perspectives in the classroom have the potential to improve instruction and can positively affect students' motivations to learn. Literature can also influence students' gender perceptions and also contribute to gender bias in the classroom. This study works toward creating a non-biased learning environment.
The Relationship Between Flexible Reading Groups And Reading Achievement In Elementary School Students, Gretchen E. H. Schlag
The Relationship Between Flexible Reading Groups And Reading Achievement In Elementary School Students, Gretchen E. H. Schlag
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite the current emphasis on differentiating instruction to accommodate individual student learning needs, most reading instruction is taught primarily in static small groups or whole group settings. However, the use of flexible reading groups for reading instruction allows students to be appropriately challenged and avoids labeling a student's reading readiness as stagnant. This study examines the relationship between flexible reading groups and reading achievement of 130 fifth grade students in one elementary school. The theoretical base for the research is grounded in the constructivist theory as supported by Vygotsky and Bruner. In this quasi-experimental quantitative research study, the effect of …
The Impact Of Enrollment In A Combined Reading And Learning Strategies Course On Exceptional Students' Fcat Reading Scale Scores, Coral Kathleen Hanson
The Impact Of Enrollment In A Combined Reading And Learning Strategies Course On Exceptional Students' Fcat Reading Scale Scores, Coral Kathleen Hanson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Previous research has shown that because remediation and support replace required and career-defining courses, exceptional students fall behind, ill equipped to act in society as autonomous adults. No Child Left Behind requires reading proficiency, so students failing standardized tests must take remedial courses. Individualized education plans often require support courses. However, there remains an important gap in the literature regarding the usefulness of reading, standardized testing, and leadership research to solve this problem. A class combining reading and support for students with exceptionalities exists at 1 high school. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the combined program …

This past summer, the ADE’s Planning Committee met in Madison for three days to discuss the Association’s future. The group had previously developed background papers, and while in Madison they built on that work. The conversations were stimulating, and participants’ opinions changed as the pros and cons of different ideas were weighed. In the end, the group agreed upon a strategic direction and an action plan for the Association. The plan is printed elsewhere in this issue as well as at www.documentaryhistory.org. I urge you to give it a close read and to think about ways you might want to …

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)
I began attending the annual ADE conference on a regular basis in 2000. Since then, I have often wondered how many of you have been aware of my distinction? The lone black in a sea of white. Not the first, of course, just the lone one. Nevertheless, I have always reveled in my distinction, even though, to be truthful, I would have welcomed some company. My distinction, I am sure, has been due to the reality that I am one of just a tiny handful of black documentary editors, which has been the result of a combination of factors. I …

Vocabulary Size, Background Characteristics, And Reading Skill Of Korean Intensive English Students, Nolan Weil
Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications
This study examines the relationship between breadth of vocabulary, background experiences in learning English and student skill in the reading of an academic text. The author used the Swansea Levels Tests to estimate vocabulary sizes and collected information on background characteristics via questionnaire from eleven Korean students enrolled in an Intensive English program and five Korean undergraduate students at Utah State University. Eight of the Intensive English students were subsequently trained in a think-aloud procedure and then completed a research task in which they read a 960-word essay. The task required the students to think aloud as they attempted to …
