Developing The High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble, Bruce Edwin Brummond

This paper offers proven methods and techniques of organization and performance with the high school vocal jazz ensemble. Hopefully, these methods and techniques will assist the high school vocal jazz director, trained in traditional choral music or instrumental music, to develop a successful high school vocal jazz ensemble. Suggestions for selecting members, materials, equipment, and the costumes are offered. The intricacies of vocal jazz interpretation and performance are analyzed and equated with facets of traditional choral music, helping to paint a clearer picture of programming.

This study has analyzed the merits of class piano instruction for the purpose of suggesting effective curriculum and group teaching technics. When compared with the aims of private instruction, the goals and purposes of the class approach placed more emphasis upon group dynamics as a means of developing better musical understanding.
