Juan De Torquemada And Antonio Alcedo: Two Contributions To Hispanic Historiography, Andre Preibish

The Courier

Andre Preibish describes two rare books by Juan De Torquemada and Antonio Alcedo, which shed light on colonial Mexico and America, respectively. Although much of Torquemada's writing is plagiarized, he cites previously unknown authors and works. Antonio Alcedo, meanwhile, provides an encyclopedic description of Spanish colonies and of the western hemisphere during the eighteenth century.

It was prepared on the assumption that missionaries will have completed approximately three weeks of intensive Spanish language training prior to beginning this course.

Each lesson has a pre-class module which previews the vocabulary, grammar, and memorization assignments found in the in-class module, and increases the student's listening comprehension. The in-class module …

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez Oct 1970

The Rise And Fall Of Army Preeminence In Cuba, 1868-1958, Louis A. Pérez

History ETDs

This is a study of the emergence of military hegemony in twentieth century Cuba, The contours of the Republic's history offers a sharply defined periodization within which to study army ascendancy. More specifically, the island entered nationhood without an army; within little more than three decades, the military institution exercised unchallenged national authority. Thirty years later the armed forces collapsed.

The Cuban army emerged initially as a military response to the problem of political instability. In the course of two armed interventions (1898-1902 and 1906-1909), United States military and political administrators saw in the Cuban armed forces an effective agency …

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen Jan 1970

The Response Of The United States To Fascism In Latin America 1933-1943, Robert C. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The conflict between the totalitarian forces of fascism and the democracies was not confined to just the battlefields of Western Europe or the beaches of the South Pacific. Between 1933 and 1943 the forces of these two conflicting ideologies were engaged in a struggle to win the confidence of the people of Latin America. The success that the United States ultimately had in winning the trust and support of the Latin America nations bolstered the morale of America while at the same time denying the Nazis an important strategic and propaganda triumph.

In this study the activities of the Nazis …

Samuel Brannan: Speculator In Mexican Lands, W. Ray Luce Iii Jan 1968

Samuel Brannan: Speculator In Mexican Lands, W. Ray Luce Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Samuel Brannan has almost become a legend in the history of the American West. Having led a group of Mormons around the Horn to California in 1846, he became a business and political leader in early California. He gained great wealth in speculation and merchandising, and is noted for his activities in the Vigilance Committee of 1851, his part in heralding the gold rush, and his developments in Calistoga and elsewhere.
Although much has been written about Brannan, very little of it deals with the last years of his life. Very little factual information has been available on his activities …

History ETDs

Preface:

In December 1923 Adolfo de la Huerta led a rebellion against the government of President Alvaro Obregón. It lasted into the last three months of 1924 and culminated in the total defeat of the rebels. The United States at once came to the support of Obregón and sided his government with munitions shipments, an embargo on arms against the rebels, naval demonstrations aimed at frustrating the naval operations of the rebels, and diplomatic services and support.

The main focus of this study is the position and participation of the United States in the la Huerta rebellion. It is not …

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan May 1966

Facundo Melgares And The Northern Frontier Of New Spain, Thomas M. Bolkan

History ETDs

This thesis deals with the military career and New Mexico governorship of Facundo Malgares. His career, from approximately 1800 to 1822, after Mexico had become independent of Spain, illustrated the operation of Spanish institutions during the last days of Spanish rule in the northern interior province of Mexico. Of special importance were problems associated with Spanish-Italian and Anglo-Spanish relations when the Indian was still powerful and the United States was beginning its westward expansion. Spanish land policy in New Mexico and its continued effect on individual holdings after United States possession was and continues to be important in New Mexico. …

The United States And Paraguay, 1845-1860: Misunderstanding, Miscalculation, And Misconduct, Thomas Orin Flickema Jan 1965

The United States And Paraguay, 1845-1860: Misunderstanding, Miscalculation, And Misconduct, Thomas Orin Flickema

Wayne State University Dissertations

In 1845 the United States had its first, if tentative diplomatic relations with the Government of Paraguay. The people and Government of the United States knew as little of Paraguay as they did of Japan. To the United States the nation of Paraguay was a secluded and unknown state. But at this point the validity of this comparison between Japan and Paraguay ends. The United States never developed the interest in Paraguay that it did in Japan. There were two basic reasons which explain this indifference on the part of the United States, which was broken only by one sporadic …

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle Feb 1964

Summer Welles' Mediation In Cuba, 1933, Margaret Naegle

Latin American Studies ETDs

This writer first became interested in the 1933 revolution in Cuba during lectures given in May, 1963 at the University of New Mexico. As part of these lectures an interesting theory was presented regarding the Communist "takeover" of Cuba. Briefly, this theory holds that behind every successful Communist revolution (Russia, China, Cuba, for examples) there has been an earlier attempt at social revolution which failed. In the case of Cuba, this would be the revolution of 1933, and especially the reformist provisional government of Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

The entire process of the 1933 Cuban revolution calls for an …

The Mexican Federalist-Centralist Struggle, 1824-1860, Michael C. Meyer Nov 1960

The Mexican Federalist-Centralist Struggle, 1824-1860, Michael C. Meyer

History ETDs

The problem of Mexican Federalism has been seriously debated by Latin American historians and political theorists. Does the present Mexican political structure, when viewed in conjunction with the unique functioning of Mexican Politics, justify the federal designation? Conscientious observers are in close unanimity on the answer. Federalism, in the "traditional" sense of the word, does not exist in Mexico today. As one leading observer has stated, "the seeds of centralism were sowed at Querétaro despite the adoption of the federal form provided for the 1917 constitution." Numerous studies appearing both in books and periodicals have reached the same conclusion. It …

The Development Of The Latin American Policy Of Cordell Hull, Francis Mccorkill

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This thesis discusses the formulation by Secretary of State Cordell Hull of the “Good Neighbor” policy in United States-Latin American relations between 1933-1937. After providing the background of United States’ relations with Latin America before 1933 and the background of Cordell Hull, the thesis discusses first the conference held in Montevideo. This conference presented an opportunity for Mr. Hull to meet personally the Latin American countries and to enunciate the new American policy of non-intervention and friendship. The discussion of the new non-intervention policy includes both the abrogation of treaties which gave the United States the right to intervene and …

The Political Thought Of José María Luis Mora, 1794-1850, Morris L. Simon Sep 1954

The Political Thought Of José María Luis Mora, 1794-1850, Morris L. Simon

Latin American Studies ETDs

This work undertakes a study of some aspects of the thought of one man, Doctor José María Luis Mora, a Mexican liberal of the nineteenth century. Naturally, selection by the writer has narrowed considerably the scope of this study. Two factors have conditioned the choice of material from Dr. Mora's breadbasket of ideas: (1) its relevancy to the Mexico of Mora's day, and (2) its value in revealing Mora as a political thinker.

Arnulfo Árias: A Study In Nationalism, Charles A. Moya May 1953

Arnulfo Árias: A Study In Nationalism, Charles A. Moya

Latin American Studies ETDs

This paper is an endeavor to present a just and impartial narration of the events as well as the interpretation of the facts that in some way conditioned the colorful political career of one of the most controversial and dynamic nationalists of contemporary Latin America.

Arnulfo Árias is a relatively young man, and while presently barred from holding public office, his many followers are confident that his exoneration and political rehabilitation are only a matter of time. If and when his civil rights are restored, it is quite possible that his political tactics will have shown some basic modifications. The …

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt May 1951

Nationalism: A Search For Unity, The Role Of The Mexican Government In Sponsoring Contemporary Fine Arts, Katharine Ferris Nutt

History ETDs

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.
