Germany, Mexico, And The United States, 1911-1917, John Joseph Leffler
Dissertations and Theses
The thesis focuses on Germany's Mexican policies from 1911 to 1917, with particular attention given to the connection of these policies to political relations between the United States and Germany and between the United States and Mexico. The paper also attempts to place German activities in Mexico within the context of Germany's desire to promote its political and economic interests on a worldwide scale. Although some unpublished sources were consulted, the account relies mostly on published documents, memoirs, and secondary sources for its factual basis.

Black Labor On A White Canal: West Indians In Panama, 1904-1980, Michael Conniff
Black Labor On A White Canal: West Indians In Panama, 1904-1980, Michael Conniff
Faculty Publications, History
As a crossroads for world commerce, Panama has always attracted outsiders. Traders, laborers, and adventurers swarmed to the Isthmus whenever new projects began. Between 1850 and 1950, as many as 200,000 West Indian blacks traveled to Panama, the most voluminous trans-Caribbean movement of people ever . The high tides of migration occurred in 1850-55 (the Panama Railroad), 1880-89 (the unsuccessful French canal), 1904-14 (the U.S. canal), and 1940-42 (the third locks project). West Indians saw Panama as a promised land with abundant jobs for the robust and easy money for the clever. They hoped that the journey to Panama would …

The Effects Of United States Inter-American Policy On U.S. Relations With Chile, 1958-1978, Michael Hunter Brown
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination and explanation of United States relations with Chile from 1958-1978. The policy of U.S. opposition to the Chilean left, especially during the government of Marxist Salvador Allende from 1970-1973, and support of anti-Marxist forces in Chile, which included a repressive military dictatorship established by a coup in 1973, reflect the overall themes of anti-Marxism and protection of American economic interests inherent in U.S. global and inter-American policy since the Second World War. The major sources of information for this study are reports from investigations and hearings conducted by the United States Congress, especially Covert Action …

The Search For Trade And Profits In Bourbon Colombia, 1765-1777, Miklos Pogonyi
History ETDs
This is a study of the first phase of Caroline reforms in Colombia and of the beginning of the region's long quest for a prosperous export economy. The dissertation seeks to explains the dual search for trade and profits in the context of world-wide commercial competition and Bourbon imperial reorganization. In the wake of defeat in the Seven Years' War, Spain introduced reforms designed to harness imperial resources with which to meet the growing threat of British commercial and military power. The innovations coincided with economic growth, notably in the export sectors of many parts of Spanish America. Intensified export …

The British Diplomatic Response To The Central American Policies Of The Franklin Pierce Administration, 1853-1856, William Mark Hillsman
History Theses & Dissertations
This thesis is an examination of the British Foreign Office's response to the Central American policies of the Franklin Pierce administration. When the Pierce administration came to power in 1853 the United States government abandoned the idea, contained in the Clayton-Bulwer Treaty of 1850, of an Anglo-American partnership in Central America and instead launched a diplomatic offensive designed to force Britain completely out of the area. The major source for this study is the Clarendon Manuscripts which contain the personal correspondence of Foreign Secretary Clarendon and his minister in Washington, John F. Crampton, as well as numerous intergovernmental memoranda and …

Jose Bernardo Gutierrez De Lara: The Forgotten Hero, Roberto N. Contreras
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Jose Bernardo Gutierrez de Lara: The Forgotten Hero presents a picture of the most salient points of the life and activities of this Mexican patriot. In writing about this personage, the author proposes to reintroduce into history a man that has been forgotten by many historians. Gutierrez de Lara's accomplishments were extraordinary for the time in which he lived. Among these were a trip to Washington, made to secure aid for the Mexican independence, the capture of Bexar, the capital of Texas, and the establishment of a provisional government there. By undertaking these endeavors he achieved many firsts in the …

The Paraguayan War And The Platine Balance Of Power, Robert H. Schaefer
The Paraguayan War And The Platine Balance Of Power, Robert H. Schaefer
Dissertations and Theses
Utilizing both primary and secondary literature, this study attempts to illustrate that the origins of one of Latin America’s most significant wars, the Paraguayan War (1864-70), are understandable only when viewed within the context of the historical development of the Rio de la Plata as a region. Adopting the framework provided by Robert N. Burr in his pioneering work on the South American continental balance of power system. “By Reason or Force: Chile and the Balancing of Power in South America, 1830-1905” (Berkely, 1965), this thesis examines one particular outgrowth of the historical process in the Rio de Plata: The …

Intercultural Influences In Early Peruvian Ceramic Design And Decoration, Clinton Pace
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
About eleven thousand years ago the earliest known human inhabitants of the Central Andean area began a lifestyle which developed into some of the richest cultures of the ancient American civilizations. The people living in this thirteen-hundred-mile arid mountain zone, which is now the nation of Peru, produced some of the most outstanding examples of ceramics in the world before the birth of Christ.
The purpose of this study was to examine representative examples from various early Peruvian cultures in an attempt to identify their characteristics and to determine the extent to which the pottery forms of certain early cultures …

El 4 De Junio: Birth Of A Legend, Ronald E. Raven
El 4 De Junio: Birth Of A Legend, Ronald E. Raven
Wayne State University Theses
In June of 1932, Marmaduke Grove and two compatriots staged a bloodless coup over the Chilean government of Juan Montero. The insurgent junta and the Grove legend have become so entwined over the years that the period has come to be known as "the twelve day Socialist Republic of Marmaduke Grove," but the traditionally history-conscious Left has conspicuously avoided publishing any hard data on that government. Consequently, Grove and the "Socialist Republic" have passed into history as the legend depicts them, unchallenged by historical research. This thesis examines those 12 days in detail through the Chilean journalistic source material. Only …

Hipólito Irigoyen's Second Administration: A Study In Administrative Collapse, Herman John Hobi
Hipólito Irigoyen's Second Administration: A Study In Administrative Collapse, Herman John Hobi
Dissertations and Theses
In 1928 Hipólito lrigoyen was the most popular President that the Argentine people had elected. Two years later his popularity had evaporated and a few hundred military cadets ousted the government. The reasons go beyond this two-year period. Argentina, contrary to popular belief, did not have a democratic tradition. The nation had been ruled by the dominant economic interests up to 1916.
In 1916, Hipólito Irigoyen was elected to his first term. The people expected him to provide them with a decent and honorable life. But in choosing the legal path of elections instead of revolution Irigoyen pre-empted any revolutionary …
