A Historiography Of Populism And Neopopulism In Latin America, Michael Conniff

For over a half century, Latin American and other scholars have written reams and held innumerable conferences about the populist style of politics in the region. Historians quickly joined in with their theories, methods, and perspectives. Most literature focused on the classic period from the 1930s-1970s, when populism dominated many nations’ governments. In the 1980s and 1990s, as the region rebounded from military dictatorship, new leaders using populist methods won office and instituted economic policies in line with neoliberalism. Populism During The Estado Novo, Michael Conniff

Although the elections were suppressed during the Estado Novo, some politicians gained valuable experience with techniques that would later be called populism. This article describes the creation of this style by Mayor Pedro Ernesto and the careers of six other leaders called populists. We conclude that the Vargas regime really helped the rise of populism.

Seen simply as reflections of Argentine history which share the relative tranquility of an attractive neighborhood in Buenos Aires, the Roca library and the Rawson statue seem unlikely links for a little-known chapter in the immigration annals of Argentina. But, in fact, both Rawson and Roca gave special consideration to the Welsh; both are remembered with appreciation; and Roca is something of a hero to the Welsh community because a century ago he personally intervened in an important dispute involving their religious beliefs.
