The Courier

Clara Sipprell's photographic career spanned almost seven decades of artistic exploration in picture-making. In April 1975, she died at age 89, leaving behind a great many friends and a pictorial legacy of considerable achievement. Whether she was photographing the crown princes of Europe or Robert Frost in his back yard, Miss Sipprell's ability to capture her subject's innermost personality became the hallmark of her work.

This study seeks to provide a method which can be used to obtain the information necessary for the design of apartments within the limitations imposed by prevailing market conditions, financial considerations and investor needs. This is accomplished by presenting first, a method of market analysis designed to determine if a market exists in a given locality and delineating specifics about that market which would affect the design. A method is also developed for translating the market conditions into a form which wold indicate whether or not a proposed apartment project is economically feasible and what its probable value would be …

The Japanese Influence On Impressionism And Post-Impressionism, Maribeth Selvig

Student Scholarship

This paper examines the transformative effect of Japanese art on Western painting during the late nineteenth century, a phenomenon that shifted the trajectory of modern art. Following centuries of isolation, Japan's reopening in the 1850s led to an influx of goods and woodcut prints into Europe. These works, particularly the Hokusai Manga, introduced French artists to entirely new methods of artistic thought. The movement began with the collection of Japanese objects and evolved into a deep study of composition, line, and color application.

The following discussion is in part the history of nationalism in the fine arts of Mexico, as a spontaneous expression and as one artificially stimulated. Of equal concern, however, are the State's endeavors to channel nationalism by controlling the bellas artes through subsidy, decree, and law, and finally by the creation of a national institute or theater. The writer has endeavored to reveal both the advantageous and disadvantageous aspects of the government's control and to render some idea as to the extent to which cultural nationalism may forge permanent unity among the Mexicans.
