Queer Perspectives On Mentorship In Higher Education: A Phenomenological Study, Anthony T. Fucci

This qualitative study explored the way in which LGBTQ+ college students experienced mentorship. Despite improvements in LGBTQ+ rights over the last 50+ years, recent scholarship has shown that queer students still face unique challenges, including discrimination and harassment based on their queer identity. Mentorship has been found to be an effective resource for assisting marginalized student populations transition successfully into college. The purpose of this study was to investigate how LGBTQ+ students experienced mentorship in order to better understand how these relationships may (or may not) contribute to their experience on college campuses. Cisheteronormativity is prevalent throughout college STEM discourses and classrooms. In this paper, we present findings from a U.S. based study focused on the experiences of collegiate STEM students with minoritized identities of sexuality and gender (MIoSG) as the backdrop for discussing how current harmful ideologies in STEM perpetuate cisheteronormativity through discursive practice. We propose that humanistic classrooms and pedagogy can work to dismantle cisheteronormative D/discourses in STEM and create MIoSG inclusive STEM classrooms and programs. Our findings highlight the ways participants experienced cisheteronormative D/discourses in their collegiate STEM contexts. Punchdrunk’s Sleep No More is an immersive theatrical adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Hitchcock’s Rebecca that has been staged in New York since 2011 with over 2000 performances. Sprawled over a hundred rooms within three intricately designed warehouses, the event offers a visceral exploration of a labyrinthine space and the potential for anonymous—even erotic—one-on-one encounters with a performer in the dark. This paper offers a new angle on Punchdrunk’s immersive style by considering the embodiment of temporality in performance and its concurrent aesthetic politics. Throughout the 1990s, prime-time network television introduced a vast increase of LGBTQ representation to American programming. This new programming was a huge step for the visibility of the LGBTQ community in America. In this paper, I study the relevance of this sudden increase and its impact on American culture and the LGBTQ community. In my research, I studied the influence of LGBTQ representation in mainstream media and the treatment of LGBTQ identities in 1990s prime-time network programming. A look at two novels at the turn of the 21st Century that emerge in clear counterpoint to the Boom, recognizing the violence inherent in national historical realities, and shattering the marginalization of writers subordinated by gender, class, or race. Portela and Piglia portray the heritage of violence in their characters, and the tension of their subjectivities in dialog with a historical understanding of the nation, both in their inimitable, unique, and ebullient narrative style.

Women in developing countries face several challenges related to gender inequality through experiences in limited access to education, labour market, and finances. Deep rooted social and cultural practices often devalue the notion of being a woman, and create limitations for women’s life opportunities and personal empowerment. The overall objective of this paper is to reflect on ways of effectively engaging with informal settlement communities in Kenya and Tanzania, in a way that elicits information that is useful to the community and to research. Sigmund Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams explains the role of the theory of psychoanalysis as it pertains to dreams. Freud then leads into the idea of how psychoanalysis as a theory applies to literature. Along with Oedipus Rex, Freud uses William Shakespeare’s Hamlet to exemplify the way in which literary texts express the desires, emotions, and/or memories of the unconscious mind, just as dreams-thoughts (unconscious desire) display themselves in dreams. When I was asked to prepare this song in memory of José Esteban Muñoz, I thought it would fly from my fingers and land perfectly onto a page like those so many obituaries I wrote in my former years working as a Funeral Director and Embalmer. But those skills don’t transfer here. My curser remained mute, blinking angrily at me to write about a man I never met but whose work was a bright star. It is a sad honor to participate in the celebration of José Esteban Muñoz’s life and works.

Over the course of his too-short career, Sam See’s scholarship focused on queerness, race, and form in American and British Modernism. See’s work examines texts by a range of authors including canonical figures such as Henry James, Langston Hughes, Virginia Woolf, and Ernest Hemingway, and more marginalized writers such as Djuna Barnes, and Charles Henri Ford and Parker Tyler. In his essay on Ford and Tyler’s 1933 novel The Young and the Evil, he argues for an analysis of the text’s “generically dual ambitions…[which,] I propose, enable contemporary literary historians to make modernism new” (1078).
