Through comparing the Hollywood films Arrival and The Shape of Water, this article explicates the films’ similar portrayals of gender, social collaboration, and monstrosity. Although the mainstream media in the United States has linked the idea of the monstrous to larger global forces, the two films suggest that “the monster” exists much closer to home. Hence, this article makes the case that monstrosity occurs in a variety of formulations such as the actions of national authorities like governmental officials that oppress and endanger a myriad of American citizens as well as newcomers. The predominance of the horror genre, broadly conceived, in recent years attests to the profound sense of anxiety and dread permeating late capitalist societies. As the processes and effects of globalization become more viscerally experienced, they are also often rendered invisible or unknowable, and individuals and groups find themselves subject to an immense array of forces beyond their control. This special issue on “The Monstrous Global: The Effects of Globalization on Cultures” explores representations of the monstrous effects and products of globalization. The monstrous (as in The Monstrous Feminine by Barbara Creed) in this sense alludes to the ways in which local or national displays of fear and anxiety about the Other are embedded in struggles and tensions of global scale; the inability to cognitively map the effect of such global forces on local/national problems produces monstrous representations of the global. In Cannibales, the Maghrebi Francophone author Mahi Binebine revisits the encounter between the so-called “cannibals” and the European colonizer in the context of illegal immigration where bodies become commodities exchangeable for social improvements creating a different form of cannibalism. It is no longer the usual dichotomy between the civilized and the savage that is at work but rather a “civilized” European imperialist who feeds himself on a migrant’s flesh. This article argues that this representation works as a “colonial fragment” from the past but contextualized in today’s globalization. Throughout his career as a filmmaker, Roman Polanski has circled the subject of sex, its aberrations, its delights, and its risks. His twenty feature films are remarkably varied, yet characteristically probe the compelling, contradictory, and enchanting nature of human sexual behavior. He develops a cluster of images or tropes that appear across his films—from knives to claustrophobic settings—that advance his enquiry. Venus in Fur is Polanski’s most comprehensive portrayal of the intricacies of sexual conduct, employing a theatrical setting (rehearsing an adaptation of a notorious classic novel), amplified with cultural allusions and exploring the limits of role-playing. This paper aims at a comparison between a classic poem from ancient Greek literature, the Works and Days by Hesiod, and ancestral records of hemerology from Daba Culture, entitled Gelimu, collected during my fieldwork in South-West China. Both traditions use constellations to mark important dates throughout the year, providing similar instructions on how to deal with daily work in the fields. Moreover, their mnemonic strategies and formulaic verses reflect their origins from oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. Since 2007, California State University, Long Beach has developed and offered courses that highlight students’ pre-existing linguistic repertoires in English and in the Romance languages. These courses are unique in that they build upon a multilingual base for the acquisition of new languages through the method of intercomprehension. As an approach that moves among languages, Intercomprehension places learners in conditions that are conducive to translanguaging and translation. This paper discusses the role of translation and translanguaging in Intercomprehension as a pedagogical approach in these courses. My great-grandparents, Niels Jensen Norgaard (1848-1920) and Karen Sorensen Norgaard (1852-1949) immigrated to America in 1869 and 1871, respectively. They had both been raised in the Aalborg area of northern Jutland. Niels left his family and a comfortable home at the age of twenty to travel alone to a new, yet unknown, destination. His immediate objective was Harlan, Iowa, where relatives had a farm. It was twelve hundred miles across unfamiliar land between New York City and Harlan, Iowa. Niels was alone in a strange land, didn't know the language, and had little money to sustain himself. He traveled on …

In 1848, the same year that Switzerland’s political structure

took on its present constitutional form as a modern nation-state, a Swiss

settler-entrepreneur named John Sutter became aware of gold deposits

at his mill in Alta California. This led directly to the California Gold

Rush. Two years later, in 1850, the United States accepted the freshly

acquired and promising region now known as “California” into the

Union as a state. Swiss immigrants enhanced the development of California

from its very inception.

Two monumental murals depict Switzerland during the

First World War: the votive painting in the Lower Ranft Chapel in

Flüeli-Ranft by Robert Durrer (1867-1934), Albert Hinter (1876-

1957) and Hans von Matt (1899-1985) from 1920-21, and the cycle

of Charles L’Eplattenier (1874-1946) in the Knights’ Hall of the Colombier

Castle from 1915-19, depicting the mobilization of Swiss

soldiers in 1914. They report in rich details how differently artists in

that country saw the war of 1914-18. Both were put into architectural

monuments built around 1500.

Star Valley is a small community on the western side of Wyoming,

today consisting of the towns Alpine, Afton, Thayne, and others.

The area, sometimes known as “Little Switzerland,” is a thriving

community with a newfound focus on tourism and other businesses

and services. Star Valley was originally settled by pioneers from the

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 1870s. At the time

the area was considered the frontier of settlement in the American

West, in which, according to one current Star Valley resident, “people

of his career as a pastor and a theologian in Switzerland. Specifically,

he resided in Geneva between 1541 and 1564 and transformed the city
