This thesis examines the composition of 2 Thessalonians 2 and focuses specifically on the relationship of the participles Τό Kαtεxov and Ό Kαtεxwv to the chapter's main theme, the Parousia of Jesus Christ. The study begins with a discussion of the various interpretations given to solve the referential meanings of the participles (chapter one). This exploration of the various attempts of scholars to account for the participles concludes with the challenge to seek answers elsewhere.

To help situate and evaluate what the writer says in regard to the participles, it was necessary to reassess the role of 2 Thessalonians 2 …

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Over the past year, our on-going projects have progressed, although a bit slowly. While the publisher had promised to have the Frey Letters out last Spring, the book is only now coming off the press. Patience was also the word with regard to our proposals for the CH-91 exhibit since the US visit of a representative of the organizing committee was delayed from Spring to early Fall. Professor Erdmann Schmocker was, however, able to establish valuable contacts while in Switzerland during the summer.

This issue of the SAHS Newsletter contains, first, the minutes and reports of the annual meeting that provide valuable insight into the present state of the Society. It offers, second, the text of two addresses, one on the Swiss political system, the other on the status of women in Swiss politics. They were given by National Councillor Verena Grendelmeier in the context of her trip to the United States that was sponsored by the SAHS with the generous support of Pro Helvetia and the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago.

I have just returned from a four month tour of duty in Germany where I had opportunity to talk with a fair cross section of Germans and to visit some biological laboratories. In Munich I visited the Zoologisches Institut built by Rockefeller for Professor K. van Frisch. It was here van Frisch and his students investigated the problems of sensory physiology: hearing, color vision, smell, taste, "Schreckstoff" in fish; here also was produced a classic work in animal behavior, "Die 'Sprache' der Bienen," an experimental analysis of the methods of communication among bees. In the autumn of 1860, twenty-two-year-old Emil Frey left his native Switzerland for America, apparently under the shadow of an impending scandal, possibly a duel. He arrived in the U.S. at a time when the economy was in a deep slump, and finding himself unable to get work, Frey enlisted in the Union Army in July, 1861. Despite the brutalizing experiences of the war, which included a year and a half as a prisoner of the Confederates, young Frey's arduous American "apprenticeship," as editor Rappolt describes his sojourn, served him well. The historical marker placed along Highway 35 near Luck, Wisconsin, commemorating the founding of Wisconsin's first cooperative creamery-the Luck Creamery Company-on the north shore of nearby Little Butternut Lake, West Denmark, notes that "the first Buttermaker was a Danish woman who made butter in large wooden churns." A brief history of this pioneering Danish woman was provided by her son, Ansgar Ravnholt, a few years before his death in 1964.1 This author, a grandson, has contributed additional details from more recently discovered records.

The separate histories of foreign-language missions present a special challenge to students of American church history. Descendants of the immigrants, more and more of mixed ancestry, lack the ability to read and translate material published in the language of their forebears. To make matters more difficult, the children and grandchildren of the pioneers often shun the tedious work of research and writing. Their handicaps apply to the offspring of all foreignspeaking peoples in America. Of the nineteenth-century immigrants, the Danes come to mind.

Children of Danish Roots is a translation by Willard R. Garred of Stammens B0rn, an article that appeared originally in the 1931 issue of the "Ryslinge Julebog," a Christmas magazine of the Ryslinge Folk High School, Ryslinge, Denmark. The article was written by L. C. Laursen when he lived in the western Nebraska community at Mirage Flats near Hay Springs. After his arrival in the community he named it Ryslinge, a name generally accepted by the settlers and their friends.
