The Bridge

Standing on the deck in the cold of the night, I could

distinguish lights some distance away on both sides of the

ship. It was clear we were in a kind of channel. Another

passenger said it was a Norwegian fjord. How he could

tell, I didn't know, because it was pretty dark out there.

But one thing, was very clear. The captain of our ship, for

all his golden buttons and stripes, must have got lost

because he was supposed to find Denmark. Columbus

could have done better. I stood there in the dark and

thought about the matter …

The Bridge

Junction City, in the early thirties, was a sleepy, small

town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. With a

population of only a few hundred, it could hardly be

called a city. But the forefathers had visions of a major rail way

and highway junction at this location, providing prosperity

and a great future for all. As it was, the railway went

straight through town and trains seldom stopped there.

This issue contains one of the three fine papers given at the annual meeting of the SAHS, held in Washington, D.C. on October 7, 1995, at the Embassy of Switzerland. The essay of the American cultural historian Professor H. Dwight Page of the University of Memphis, Tennessee, details the numerous and complex issues posed by the European Union to the Swiss polity. Ambassador Carlo Jagmetti attended the session and offered a thoughtful and appreciative response. Readers interested in Swiss affairs viewed within a European context will especially value Professor Page's incisive analysis.

During the fifty years since the conclusion of World War II in 1945, Europe has undergone more radical changes than during the three preceding millennia. The Treaty of Maastricht, prepared by the twelve members of the European Community in December, 1991, legalizes a process of European social, economic and political unification and homogenization contradicting the evolution of European politics and societies since the fall of the Roman Empire. The majority of the nation states of Western Europe have been generated by a concerted struggle against amalgamation into large transnational empires. In and around Switzerland Gertrud Leutennegger ranks among the wellknown contemporary Swiss writers. As yet, however, her work has not been translated and its reception has therefore been limited to German-speaking countries. Margrit Zinggeler' s study thus comes as a welcome introduction to Leutenegger' s writings that is designed for a general as well as specialized readership. As Zinggeler makes clear at the outset of her investigation, when Gertrud Leutenegger first started to write in the early 1970's, her artistic independence signaled a turning point in Swiss women writing. The idea of identity with Europe is central to the studies of the cities in the two volumes under review. As Carl Schorske suggests in his introduction to Geneva, Zurich, Basel: while Switzerland voted against European unity, these three cities, despite diverse but strong local identities, endorsed the unity concept when a referendum was undertaken in 1992. On January 12, 1996, Hans Rudolf Guggisberg, professor emeritus of the University of Basel, died unexpectedly of a heart attack. On December 15, 1995, he had given his farewell lecture at the University in which he defined himself as a "student of history," as someone for whom personal as well as professional life was as much a process of continued learning as it was of teaching. The farewell address of Caspar Jenny (1812- 1860), a leading Glarnese citizen, speaks to us today as it did to the parting emigrants. The diary entry of Nildaus Durst (1797-1874), one of the two scouts who, after an extended journey through the Midwest, selected the land for the Glarnese emigrants, conveys some of the quiet excitement he felt during New Glarus' very first days. New Glarus had a good foundation for colonization. It had financial support from the sending society via the Emigration Society of Glarus. It was settled in a pleasant location with the resources necessary to gain a good start. Also, the surrounding communities were supportive of colonization. Many people from these communities were of German or Swiss origin and could speak the language fluently. This helped the newcomers to feel some connection with their new environment. This work, part novel, part chronicle, part historical reconstruction, pursues the thesis: "All involved with Andersonville were in the main pushed, manipulated, cheated" (189). This tale of misfortune has no heroes: Its central character is Henry Wirz, who for some months towards the end of his life was commander of Andersonville, one of the most notorious Confederate prisons for captured soldiers of the North.
