Rebels Without A Cause: Youth And Terrorism In Contemporary Italian Film, Simona Bondavalli

Re-visioning Terrorism

This essay explores the representation of Italian terrorists in recent generational films set in the 1960s and 1970s. While they foreground the protagonists’ youth and celebrate it as a historically new condition, these coming-of-age narratives typically present radicalism either in terms of youthful idealism or youthful error, with corresponding nostalgic or revisionist approaches that obscure its ideological basis. An analysis of the selective generational appeal deployed by four recent films through narrative structure, style and casting highlights an alternative reading of the post-ideological approach to the representation of terrorism in the 21st century.

This study analyses the construction of identity in female protagonists as they develop a domestic profession in the private and public sectors. This dissertation analyzes Mario Benedetti's novel Primavera con una esquina rota (A Spring with a Broken Corner) with special attention to the subject of the political prisoner and the representation of the crisis that unfolded in Uruguay after the 1973 coup d'état. Up until now, criticism on Primavera has focused, almost exclusively, on the topic of exile, limiting with this the text's multidimensional quality. This dissertation postulates that the subject of the political prisoner is as central to the novel as that of exile. This dissertation investigates the grammar of noun phrases as produced in two genres (spontaneous conversations and Pear Film narratives) of spoken Ecuadorian Spanish. As speakers converse and narrate, they make choices about what form (full NP, pronoun, unexpressed) to use for a noun in a particular context, how to best modify that noun (choice of article and other determiners) and what syntactic role to use; this is a study of the different factors that motivate those decisions. This thesis focuses on the fictional writings of three contemporary Brazilian authors: Ana Paula Maia, Luiz Ruffato and Marcelino Freire. In selected works of the three above-mentioned writers, I examine the intertwined representation of social violence and denial of citizenship. The thesis inquires into the way literature depicts and critiques socio-economic difference and proposes — within the fictional realm — modes of reclaiming agency through written expression. This dissertation addresses a complex cultural and social phenomenon: German multiculturalism in the framework of the European Union in the century of globalization and global migration. I use selected cinematographic works by Fatih Akin, currently the most celebrated German and European filmmaker, as cultural texts. This project illuminates cultural controversies, political complexities, and the discriminatory nature of German multiculturalism. Specifically, I show how and why the German society eagerly accepts and successfully integrates Italian immigrants, yet, culturally marginalizes and socially excludes the Turks. When, exactly, Switzerland became a hub for intelligence gathering

and covert operations has been lost to the mists of time. Despite centuries

of implicit and declared transnational neutrality, Switzerland, by the

cruel ironies of geographic fate, couldn't help being at the confluence of

the intelligence realpolitik in Europe and, later, in the world. This article

seeks to illustrate through selected examples--from the early nineteenth

to the twentieth centuries--facets of the history of the foreign use of

Switzerland and the Swiss neutrality ideal in the tectonic power politics

At first glance, the Fifteenth Century Swiss ascetic Niklaus von Flue

and George Washington have only their distinguished military service

in common. Yet they share something far more important to contemporary

citizens of the United States and Switzerland. They were early

proponents of their respective nations' views on neutrality and vocal

advocates of avoiding foreign influences, alliances, and payments. For

international observers, Swiss neutrality is a universal constant and the

nation is quickly approaching two hundred years of uninterrupted neutrality.

While many Americans of Swiss descent have made valuable contributions

to the development of the United States, Henry Wirz has often

been viewed with disdain. He was the commander of the infamous Andersonville

prison where nearly 13,000 Union prisoners died during the

American Civil War, and he was one of the two men executed for war

crimes relating to that conflict. Despite his conviction in court, much

controversy surrounds his actions at Andersonville, and many writers

have either condemned or praised him. This paper will review the career

of Henry Wirz, examine his conduct at Andersonville, and analyze his

This study examines the relationship between internet development and various socio-economic factors that are assumed to affect internet infrastructure development decision. The data collected for 35 Asian countries is secondary data collected from various sources. This study tests six hypotheses about the impact of various socio-economic factors and economic freedom indicators on Internet Penetration Rate (IPR) and Internet Service Providers (ISP). The findings show that the IPR can be statistically explained by one independent variable: GDP (Gross Domestic Product). The study models also include Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), literacy rate, fertility rate, the percentage of urban population, the country‟s status …

America is a land of immigrants, and the Ticino Swiss immigrants

share many of the characteristics found in other immigrant groups.

The first American immigrants were the English in the 17th century,

who founded the country. They were followed by the Scots-Irish from

Northern Ireland in the 18th century, and then in the half century after

America's Civil War, the years 1865 to 1920, masses of immigrants

came from all parts of Europe.

Haiku as a way of recording her personal impressions. She shares with

of the United States, including the westward expansion, and people

from Switzerland participated in some of the most significant events

and activities in the development of the American frontier. They were

involved in treks to the West, were found in many mining camps and in

pioneer settlements, and served in the US Army. Among the most celebrated

Swiss soldiers was Ernest Yeuve, from Neuchatel, who received

the Congressional Medal of Honor for driving off an Indian warrior in

Tŭpchileshtov’”, kept in Bŭlgarski istoricheski arkhiv (Bulgarian Historical Archive), Narodna Biblioteka (National Library) “Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodiĭ” in Sofia. The analysis is organized around three issues: the biography of the archive’s founder; the acquisition of the archive by the National Library; and the ways the archival material has been interpreted in the Bulgarian historiography. As the programmatic, if diverse tenets of the Neuer Deutscher Film began to lose their hold on German film-making in the eighties, filmic narratives and cinematography emerged which on the one hand draw on this tradition, especially in seemingly postmodern narratives of subversion, minority and subjectivity, but on the other combine these with conventional, even restorative film language and narrative construction. Myths of gods, legends of battles, and folktales of magic abound in the heroic narratives of the Middle Ages. Mythology in the Middle Ages: Heroic Tales of Monsters, Magic, and Might describes how Medieval heroes were developed from a variety of source materials: Early pagan gods become euhemerized through a Christian lens, and an older epic heroic sensibility was exchanged for a Christian typological and figural representation of saints. Most startlingly, the faces of Christian martyrs were refracted through a heroic lens in the battles between Christian standard-bearers and their opponents, who were at times explicitly described in demonic terms. …
