The Archangel Fragment: Identifying And Interpreting C. S. Lewis’S “Cryptic Note”, Joe Ricke
The Archangel Fragment: Identifying And Interpreting C. S. Lewis’S “Cryptic Note”, Joe Ricke
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
According to Dickieson and Starr, “On a blank page at the end of Stephens book, where the open space was apparently tempting, Brown found this cryptic note written in Lewis’s hand.” That note, the key link to the Bodleian fragment, reads as follows: "I tried v. hard to get hold of the letters on the other side—from the archangel to the guardian angel. But the only bit that ever camethrough didn’t make much sense. It was 'The children continued instructing the bears in the bend of the great river.'" However, for reasons they could not have known at that time, …

Written between May and October 1916, The Quest of Bleheris is an unfinished narrative romance of seventeen chapters concerning the adventures of a young knight, Bleheris, as he moves from the relative safety of civilized society to the challenges and dangers of a wilderness experience. An Imaginative Tale From The Father Of C. S. Lewis, Crystal Hurd
An Imaginative Tale From The Father Of C. S. Lewis, Crystal Hurd
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
“The Story of a Half Sovereign” resembles traditional work of the late nineteenth century. It possesses a trace of its ancestors in echoes of Dickens, as well as some similarities to the genuine issues featured in the Irish courts during Albert’s tenure as solicitor. However, beyond its significance as a simple story, “The Story of a Half Sovereign” serves to demonstrate the political and spiritual climate in which Warren and Jack developed. Their father’s insistence on personal integrity and biblical morality, his early frustrations with privilege among the ruling class, and his conviction to perform his Christian duty were not …

Dorian And The Double: Repressed Homosexual Desire In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Alexandra Wohlford
Dorian And The Double: Repressed Homosexual Desire In The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Alexandra Wohlford
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Written for Dr. Chris Foss’s English 478 Seminar on Oscar Wilde, “Dorian and the Double: Repressed Homosexual Desire in The Picture of Dorian Gray” examines one of Wilde’s most infamous and beloved works through the lens of both psychoanalytic and queer theory. Drawing on the Romantic and Gothic traditions’ concept of the “literary double,” this research paper explores the dynamic portrait of Dorian Gray as a double for multiple characters in the text, serving as a representation of their repressed homosexual desire. Namely, Basil Hallward and Dorian Gray himself emerge as the primary focus of this analysis. In addition, …

"Raised By Implication": C.S. Lewis's Studies In Words And Historical And Moral Judgment, Philip Irving Mitchell
"Raised By Implication": C.S. Lewis's Studies In Words And Historical And Moral Judgment, Philip Irving Mitchell
Sehnsucht: The C. S. Lewis Journal
C. S. Lewis wrote Studies in Words "to help students understand the lexical and historical meaning of certain common words, in effect, to assist “a more accurate reading of old books.” His choice of words, with their classical, European, and British contexts, is reflective of Lewis’s vocation as a professor of English literature. However, the chosen words also contain moral meanings. While the primary purpose of Studies is to train the reader in making conceptual distinctions, it also provides a kind of training in interpretive and historical responsibility that runs parallel with Lewis’s view of the natural moral law. The …
