Social Problems In The Fiction Of Benjamin Disraeli, Harriet Uhler Simpson

The main purpose of this study is to present the political and social ideas which Benjamin Disraeli expressed through his fiction. His novels have been said to be a means whereby Disraeli clarified his ideas in his own mind before he attempted direct political or practical action. Since Disraeli was a statesman as well as a novelist, the question of whether or not, or to what extent, Disraeli's ideas were put into action is a more valid question, perhaps, than in the case of any other English author.

This thesis, submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Xavier University in partial fulfillment of requirements for a Master of Arts degree in 1943, examines the theological content of John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost through systematic comparison with the accepted doctrines of Christian and non-Christian religious traditions. The study analyzes six major theological themes in the poem: the Trinity, Creation, Free Will, Satan, the Fall of Man, and the Redemption. For each theme, the author compares Milton's poetic elaborations against the teachings of Catholic Church Fathers including Augustine, Aquinas, Hilary of Poitiers, and Chrysostom, as well …

It is the purpose of this study to discuss the sentimental elements in the writings of Henry Fielding. There is no doubt that, for the most part, even a casual examination of Fielding's writings justifies the classification commonly assigned to him by his readers, that of intellectual realist. Somewhere is most general histories and outlines of English literature, the greatness of the King James Bible and its influence on all of English literature since 1611 have been pointed out. Unquestionably, all men of letters in the English language since that time have known of the King James Bible; and many of them may have been decidedly influenced by its tradition of cadenced prose and its prose figures.
