As an immigrant-receiving nation, the United States (US) is home to a plurality of languages. This has led to the widespread use of translation in public life. Because of this, the US serves as a case study of how translation policy is developed and deployed in a context of ongoing immigration. This chapter provides that case study using a theoretical approach that is illustrated with historical and practical examples. It first explores the historical development of language ideology in the US and then describes current translation rules, practices and beliefs in the context of the presence of a large number …

A Mute Pleasure: Novelistic Poetics In The Nineteenth-Century, Ryan Everitt

Through special attention to the non-narrative, descriptive, lyrical, or even boring passages that interrupt the story, this dissertation explores what happens when the nineteenth-century British novel envelops experiences that were traditionally (or since Romanticism) in the domain of poetry: longings for escape, exhilarating affects of freedom, opaque moments of revelation. In most cases, I characterize the novel discourse as representing a prosaic consciousness that wrestles with its more visceral yet vital “other,” poetic consciousness. To articulate how poetry survives within novelistic discourse, this dissertation is organized around sets of opposing terms, whose unresolved tension becomes the basis of my analysis …

Regretting Nothing, Or Regretting Everything? Postfeminism, Femininity, And Regret In Miss Austen Regrets, Jessica Taylor

This article considers how regret is mobilized within a postfeminist cultural context, taking the 2007 BBC film Miss Austen Regrets (dir. Jeremy Lovering, UK) as its case study. The article proposes that what is regretted in postfeminist culture speaks to the values and tensions that underpin this cultural context and explores how the expression or experience of regret is treated as proof of women's failures of subjectivity and decision-making. Through examining three of the main characters — Jane Austen, Cassandra Austen, and Fanny Austen Knight — and their interactions with regret, this article argues that both normative femininity and feminist …

“As Blind Men Learn The Sun”: Towards A Poetics Of Queer Mysticism In American Literature, 1860-1960, Bradley M. Nelson

This dissertation seeks to play with the similarity between the queer and the mystical, and in the process, defines something I call “queer mysticism.” I include four cardinal figures of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American poetry: Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Gertrude Stein, and Robert Duncan. Beginning with Walt Whitman, I show how each of these poets bear witness to an experience of the divine that is both immanent and immanently queer. Through historical and biographical research, I uncover their poetic inspiration in popular modes of expression and in the esoteric and arcane. In her article "The Malvinas/Falklands War in Transatlantic Narratives: Exploring Collective Memory and Negotiating Self/Other Identity", Andrea R. Bellot examines the remembrance of the Malvinas/Falklands War (1982) through cultural texts for children, presenting a comparative analysis of post-war narratives from both the United Kingdom and Argentina. In his article "Precarious Refugee: Self-Optimization and Neoliberal Rationality in Rawi Hage’s Cockroach," Shahab Nadimi examines Rawi Hage’s Cockroach as an example of refugee literature in the light of current debates about neoliberal biopolitics and the idea of a new form of life. Refugees, who are neither identified as citizens nor totally as strangers, are forced to compete in unequal circumstances of economic mobility with other citizens, often leaving them in a condition of personal debts, unemployment, and mental distress. This review by Dr. Stephanie Medden, Assistant Professor of English and Media Studies at Bentley University, evaluates two open textbooks: “Exploring Public Speaking: The OER College Public Speaking Textbook” and “Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking.” Medden concludes that while both resources are good introductions for teaching public speaking, supplementation is recommended due to both textbooks being limited in covering multimodal communication.

This review by Dr. Kristin Roberts Raymond, lecturer in the English and Media Studies Department and the Director of ESOL at Bentley University, evaluates three OER textbooks for public speaking: "Exploring Public Speaking," "Speak Out, Call In: Public Speaking as Advocacy," and "Stand Up, Speak Out: The Practice and Ethics of Public Speaking." Each text is assessed for its strengths and weaknesses. The reviewer concludes that a combination of these texts would be ideal for teaching, highlighting the benefit of OER resources in allowing instructors to draw from multiple sources without additional cost to students.

Soontornvat’s graphic memoir, The Tryout diversifies the Thai American experience to an audience intended for K-12 teachers and educators, parents, caretakers, and children. Canadian Filipino Joanna Cacao serves as the illustrator for The Tryout and does superb drawing expressions and emotions aligning with text in bubbles and boxes implying thinking or speaking. The story centers on Christina, who is a 7th grader living in a small town in Texas trying out for the middle school’s cheerleading squad.
