Truman Capote And The Tarnished Tale Of In Cold Blood, Nicholas N. Montes Mar 2016

Truman Capote And The Tarnished Tale Of In Cold Blood, Nicholas N. Montes

BYU English Symposium

This paper in the genre of psycho-biography examines recent reports of fraud in Capote's work on the novel In Cold Blood. While my paper tackles the reasons why Capote's journalism may not have been sound, his traumatic love affairs, an inappropriate relationship to a case detective, and tragic childhood, it is not the purpose to tarnish a beloved author's reputation.

Fat Fairies: Stereotype, Body Type, And Personality Of Tv Godmothers, Ariel Peterson Mar 2016

Fat Fairies: Stereotype, Body Type, And Personality Of Tv Godmothers, Ariel Peterson

BYU English Symposium

ABC’s Once Upon a Time introduced Catherine Lough Haggquist as Cinderella’s fairy godmother. Instead of playing Disney’s classically oversized, bumbling, air-headed godmother, Haggquist appeared cool and collected, dressed like a princess. And ABC killed Haggquist off in the very same episode. Was she too fit and smart for the godmother stereotype? Haggquist is not the only fairy to suffer for body type. Jeana Jorgensen and other feminist writers have seen the danger of age and body stereotyping entails. Adding to these arguments, I propose we approach fairy tale bodies as a spectrum where personality is attached to body type. Princesses …

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!: Newspapers As Bakhtinian Chronotope In The Mysteries Of London And Sherlock Holmes, Conor Hilton Mar 2016

Extra! Extra! Read All About It!: Newspapers As Bakhtinian Chronotope In The Mysteries Of London And Sherlock Holmes, Conor Hilton

BYU English Symposium

Newspapers function as a Bakhtinian chronotope in George W.M. Reynolds’s The Mysteries of London. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle adapted this usage of newspapers in his Sherlock Holms stories. The chronotope has several features and consequences. The features include an inherent emphasis on physicality, creating a concrete object to embody the ideas of information, communication, and technology; forging a link between newspapers and crime or criminality; and linking newspapers to low-brow and popular culture. These features originate in Reynolds’s work, but are carried over into Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories. They also bring with them consequences. The first is the legitimation …

Hair, Voice, And Agency: Transformation, Growing Up, And Love In Fairy Tales, Denya I. Palmer Mar 2016

Hair, Voice, And Agency: Transformation, Growing Up, And Love In Fairy Tales, Denya I. Palmer

BYU English Symposium

Fairy tales are fraught with magical transformations. However, the most important transformation is not a magical one. Characters experience a true transformation of self when they use their agency to make decisions and act, making the shift from childhood to adulthood. The deepest transformations occur when the characters determine their own destiny. Part of this shift to adulthood also includes forming and maintaining relationships with others. The tales of Rapunzel (Grimm’s 1812) and Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen, 1837) include characters who transform both physically but also emotionally. Their agency and transformation of character is manifest through their voices and …

Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling Mar 2016

Writing Resistance: Agency And Politics In The Postmodern And Contemporary Novel, Bradley Michael Poling

Theses and Dissertations

This project seeks to substantiate a key ambivalence at the heart of contemporary literature: what does it mean to "return" to politics? Critics of contemporary literature have outlined the new literary aesthetic, using social and political engagement as a key component in distinguishing the contemporary novel from its postmodern predecessor. This project, in response to this claim, will examine both the discursive and representation politics of two landmark postmodern novels, Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow and Don DeLillo's Libra, while examining Jennifer Eganâ??s A Visit from the Goon Squad as a descendent of this literary lineage. This project argues that the …

Whitefield's Music: Moorfields Tabernacle, The Divine Musical Miscellany (1754), And The Fashioning Of Early Evangelical Sacred Song, Stephen A. Marini Mar 2016

Whitefield's Music: Moorfields Tabernacle, The Divine Musical Miscellany (1754), And The Fashioning Of Early Evangelical Sacred Song, Stephen A. Marini

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

Evangelical hymnody was the most significant form of popular sacred song in eighteenth-century Anglo-America. John and Charles Wesley built their Methodist movement on it, but little is known about the music of their great collaborator and eventual rival, George Whitefield (1714-1770). The essential sources of Whitefield's music are the development of ritual song at his Moorfields Tabernacle in London, his Collection of Hymns for Social Worship (1753) prepared for that congregation, and a little-known tunebook called The Divine Musical Miscellany (1754) that contains the first and definitive repertory of music known to be sung at Moorfields. This essay recovers Whitefield's …

Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper Mar 2016

Reconsidering The Emergence Of The Gay Novel In English And German, James P. Wilper

Purdue University Press Books

In Reconsidering the Emergence of the Gay Novel in English and German, James P. Wilper examines a key moment in the development of the modern gay novel by analyzing four novels by German, British, and American writers. Wilper studies how the texts are influenced by and respond and react to four schools of thought regarding male homosexuality in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The first is legal codes criminalizing sex acts between men and the religious doctrine that informs them. The second is the ancient Greek erotic philosophy, in which a revival of interest took place in the …

Fantasy Incarnate: Of Elves And Men, Simon J. Cook Dr. Mar 2016

Fantasy Incarnate: Of Elves And Men, Simon J. Cook Dr.

Journal of Tolkien Research

This essay proposes the idea of incarnation as a key to unlocking Tolkien’s conception of fantasy as set out in the 'Origins' section of On Fairy Stories. Tolkien's intellectual context is explored and his conception of mythology as a blending of imagination and history examined. The essay also establishes the differences between mortal and Elvish fantasy and argues that Tolkien's Elves engage in a different kind of incarnational art than do mortals. In conclusion it is claimed that in ‘Origins’ Tolkien reworked the speculations of mid-Victorian comparative philology into an aesthetic theory of artistic creation grounded upon the notion …

Virginity And Intellectual Construction: The Function Of Virginity Within The Early English Novel, Jayna Morgan Leipart Guttilla Mar 2016

Virginity And Intellectual Construction: The Function Of Virginity Within The Early English Novel, Jayna Morgan Leipart Guttilla

Theses and Dissertations

This project situates the state of virginity as both a narrative and mode of behavior within Samuel Richardson's novel Pamela. By challenging the supposition that feminine virginity in eighteenth-century novels is presented as both an intellectual and physical disability, this thesis allows for a reconsideration of how virginity functions in the early novel. I place virginity in three distinct and yet simultaneous modes of thinking that contributed to the conflicting and contradictory images of women that were available to purchase in print: virginity as moral intelligence and form of resistance; virginity as an intellectual disability, and the loss of virginity …

The Hopeful Elimination Of Nuclear Weapons, Shailesh Patel Mar 2016

The Hopeful Elimination Of Nuclear Weapons, Shailesh Patel

2016 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

Nuclear weapons is not a topic that is often talked about, or even crosses the mind of the "common Joe" on a regular basis, however, it should be a pressing concern for everyone living in the world. Created in a century that saw two world wars, multiple genocides, and downright human indecency, nuclear weapons represent all the negatives of the 20th century. This presentation covers the costs and risks of keeping them, and suggests how society would benefit from the funds being spent elsewhere. The information for this project was derived from credible sources such as The Brookings Institute, CNN …

Charles Olson's theory of history, "istorin", harkens back to Herodotus. As Olson explains it, this term means "to find out for yourself". Olson's understanding of the concept is significantly informed by classicist J.A. K. Thompson. This paper examines Olson's concept of "istorin" and storytelling techniques as employed in "The Maximus Poems".

Hannah More's Moral Imagination: Fiction That Reformed A Nation, Emma Beecken Mar 2016

Hannah More's Moral Imagination: Fiction That Reformed A Nation, Emma Beecken

Library Research Prize Student Works

She has been described as the most influential woman of her era and Britain's greatest propagandist. Her works were far more popular than Jane Austen's and were personally requested by royalty. She ran in the highest circles, dear friends with both literary giant Samuel Johnson and abolitionist William Wilberforce. In her day, Hannah More was a household name, widely recognized fro the massive influence she had on society. Today, it is rare to meet someone who has heard of her.

When Hannah More began writing in the late eighteenth century, her works became extremely popular very quickly. By the time …

For The Progress Of “Faustus And Helen”: Crane, Whitman, And The Metropolitan Progress Poem, Jeremy Colangelo Mar 2016

For The Progress Of “Faustus And Helen”: Crane, Whitman, And The Metropolitan Progress Poem, Jeremy Colangelo

Department of English Publications

This essay is meant to invigorate a critical discussion of the progress poem—a genre that, while prevalent in American literature, has been virtually ignored by critics and scholars. In lieu of tackling the genre in its entirety, a project too large for just one article, the author focuses the argument through the well-known alignment between Walt Whitman and Hart Crane on the subject of the modern city. It is through the progress poem genre that Crane and Whitman’s peculiar place in metropolitan poetics can best be understood, and it is through their poetry that scholars can begin to approach the …

This study offers implications for establishing American multilingual writing centers based on data that emerged from observations and interviews conducted at Stellenbosch. Several themes emerged from the data that have important implications for American centers. First, there must be a clear understanding of what defines a multilingual writing center. …

The Goose

A climbing accident took …
