Shakespeare's Blush, Or "The Animal" In Othello, Steven Swarbrick Apr 2016

Shakespeare's Blush, Or "The Animal" In Othello, Steven Swarbrick

Publications and Research

This essay examines how the rhetoric of animalization in Shakespeare’s Othello compels us to think early modern categories of race in connection with early modern discourses of “human” versus “animal.” Beginning with Shakespeare’s representation of Iago, I suggest that it is the potential for sameness conditioned by Iago’s counterfactual statement (“Were I the Moor, I would not by Iago”) that is most significant about his relation to Othello. From there I consider the overlap between the play’s representations of animality and black skin. Read in the context of Jacques Derrida’s reflections on animals, I consider the deconstructive value of linking …

On The Appraisal Of The Trope Of Rebirth In Maryse Condé’S I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem, Imen Mzoughi Apr 2016

On The Appraisal Of The Trope Of Rebirth In Maryse Condé’S I, Tituba, Black Witch Of Salem, Imen Mzoughi

Journal of South Texas English Studies

This paper aims to explore the complex layers of the trope of rebirth. It highlights the various levels on which the notion of rebirth operates in I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem by the Creolophone writer Maryse Condé (Guadeloupean, American and French). Indeed, Maryse Condé resurrects Hester Prynne, the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter written by 19th century American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. In so doing, Condé entails her rebirth. From this vantage point, Condé puts into effect a reversal in the main character’s fate to requestion the status of women in 19th century Puritan American society, a status deliberately put …

Jane Austen Meets The Gps: Place And Space, David Kolb Apr 2016

Jane Austen Meets The Gps: Place And Space, David Kolb

Sophia and Philosophia

When one reads Jane Austen’s novels, one finds that her heroines’ lives center around a beloved and comfortable home, in a local region including a small town, some neighboring estates, and local hills and valleys. It is a detailed and textured home area of nearby places reachable on foot or horse. One to three miles are walkable to a friend’s house or a favorite scenic hill. Beyond this region is no longer “home.” Fifteen or twenty-five miles can be distant.

What Do You Mean, "Practice"? Theorizing The Writing-Music Connection, Callie Elise Compton Apr 2016

What Do You Mean, "Practice"? Theorizing The Writing-Music Connection, Callie Elise Compton

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Researchers in the field of composition studies have frequently made allusions to musicians when they’ve discussed the role of practice in gaining skill. In doing so, however, they’ve risked making speculative rather than testable claims and separating composition studies from recent insights on practice from other disciplines such as education and music psychology. These fields, I argue, offer testable frameworks with which composition instructors and scholars can teach and study writing practice. Such frameworks are necessary because composition researchers need to supplement qualitative studies of writers and writing with quantitative data to generate replicable tests of teaching methods that may …

Ghosts And Angels In The House: Cecilia De Noel And The Search For Faith In The Late Nineteenth Century, Christine Sutphin Apr 2016

Ghosts And Angels In The House: Cecilia De Noel And The Search For Faith In The Late Nineteenth Century, Christine Sutphin

English Faculty Scholarship

The nineteenth century, so often thought of as the age of scientific theory, technological change, and realism in fiction, abounds with supernatural phenomena. While some readers and observers of culture could define practices and texts related to the supernatural as pernicious because irreligious or unscientific, others could appreciate ghost stories at least as imaginative entertainment resulting in pleasurable fear but not otherwise significant. However, these stories can be read as serious and profound explorations of the unknown and the moral, philosophical, and spiritual questions with which we continue to struggle.

Of all the ghost stories published during the period, perhaps …

Book Review: Staging Intercultural Ireland: New Plays And Practitioner Perspectives, Kathleen A. Heininge

Faculty Publications - Department of English

All scholars of world literature, especially those trained in the traditions of Western thought, must ultimately grapple with the question of privilege: In opening up a space for all voices to be heard, care must be taken to avoid coopting those voices. Academics must always be aware of our own motivations so that discussions of multi-cultural literature do not appear anthropological, mere examinations of other cultures from a worldview that seems ubiquitous but which comes from a place of unconscious-perhaps- superiority. Critics from Edward Said, in Orientalism, to Gayatri Spivak, in "Can the Subaltern Speak?" to Chinua Achebe in …

There’S An Identity Label For Me?: Perceptions By First-Generation College Students Of An Institutional Label, Curtis A. Green-Eneix

McNair Scholars Research Journal

Although first-generation college students (FGCS) have been entering universities in large numbers, and even with past quantitative studies to understand this demographic, a major percentage continue to drop out of college within their first two years. Past research has resulted in an overall picture of this demographic. This qualitative study explores: (1) how FGCS perceive their social identity in relation to a college community, and (2) how interacting with support programs, such as Boise State’s Student Success Program (SSP), shapes their understanding of support. In interviews with nine FGCS students, most of them did not know this first-generation label applied …

Poetic Myths: American Nationalism And The War Of 1812, Amber Shoopman

McNair Scholars Research Journal

“The Star Spangled Banner” is one of the best known patriotic songs in the United States; however, most people do not know it originated as a poem during a much understudied, but highly influential time. “The Star Spangled Banner” is one of several poems that helped build unity in America during and after the War of 1812. This project analyzes early 19th century American poetry and the influence it had on building foundational ideologies of American nationalism. It focuses on the role poetry played in creating nationalistic myths by using primary texts to explore and analyze the different themes, words, …

Madness, Death, And Civilization: Non-European Women Under Patriarchy And Imperialism, Mengying Li

Masters Theses

In light of Wide Sargasso Sea, through which Jean Rhys intends to provide the madwoman Bertha in Jane Eyre with a voice and a life, this thesis attempts to reread Jane Eyre from a postcolonial perspective, arguing that both texts can be read as critiques of the cruelty and inhumanity of European civilization. After the English beat the Spanish at sea, and complete the First Industrial Revolution, it establishes the country as the greatest imperialistic power in the world. The need of labor, raw material, and new market leads them to develop colonies in remote areas like the Caribbean. By …
