One day, Horacio himself also receives a mysterious box containing the unpublished manuscripts of an unknown poet. His novel and his …

The Geometry Of Loss: A Novel, Elidio La Torre La Torre
The Geometry Of Loss: A Novel, Elidio La Torre La Torre
Open Access Theses & Dissertations
In the year 2025, Orlando Aniello, nicknamed Or, a Puerto Rican poet with a broken life, becomes a consciousness in virtual space. Tricked by a couple of goons that devote most of their duties to bootleg memories for people who lead dull and meaningless lives, Orlandos personality splits into fragments. As consequence, his actual experiences blend the hosts own recollections, which accidentally upload to Orlandos brain. If bootleg mnemonic technologies glitch, Orlando does not know who he is anymore. Indeed, Orlando/ Gogo/ Alejandro suffers anterograde memory loss, and the narrator becomes merely a voice without a body. A geometry of …

Song Of The Scapegoat: How Silence Augments Kenneth Burke’S Notion Of The Scapegoat In Political Rhetoric, Mary Elizabeth Smith
Song Of The Scapegoat: How Silence Augments Kenneth Burke’S Notion Of The Scapegoat In Political Rhetoric, Mary Elizabeth Smith
Theses and Dissertations
President Donald Trump ascended to the US’s highest hall of power through rhetoric that scapegoated marginalized groups, such as Muslims, Hispanics, immigrants, foreigners, and others. This work considers the executive order President Donald Trump released January 27, 2017, and its revision released March 06, 2017, for how it exemplifies Kenneth Burke’s notion of the scapegoat, specifically as outlined in A Grammar of Motives and A Rhetoric of Motives. These executive orders have come to be known as the “Muslim Ban” due to the way they implicate Muslims in charges of terrorism, harm, and danger and affect the lives and movement …
The Nature Of Power And Corruption In Plato And J.R.R. Tolkien, Lily Howard-Hill
The Nature Of Power And Corruption In Plato And J.R.R. Tolkien, Lily Howard-Hill
Theses and Dissertations
In the collected dialogues of Plato, Plato sets out his arguments on democracy, power, and free-will through Socrates’ interactions with his interlocutors. His understandings of morality and justice suggest that a good and moral person is the foundation for successful societies. In The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and other tales, Tolkien offers a different lens through which to observe philosophical and ethical concepts. Plato’s morality is centered around the organization and the structure of the soul. The soul is ruled by virtues which include justice and knowledge. Here, I present an analysis of key Platonic concepts by offering …
Risky Business: Case Study Pedagogy And Business Communication, Jonathan A. Maricle
Risky Business: Case Study Pedagogy And Business Communication, Jonathan A. Maricle
Theses and Dissertations
When Harvard College built their business school curriculum around case studies and discussion-based classrooms in the early 1900s, it created a radical shift in business school pedagogy throughout the nation due to its ability to prepare students for careers in industry. As case study pedagogy spread to other fields throughout the 20th century, such as medical education and the sciences, these fields extended Harvard's approach in order to create highly effective, field-specific pedagogies. However, business communication is yet to develop their own field-specific approach to case study pedagogy that meets the unique needs of our educators and students. I argue …
Examining The Impact Naming One’S Beliefs Has On One’S Practice: The Journey Of Three English Language Arts Teachers, Jessica Lynn Price
Examining The Impact Naming One’S Beliefs Has On One’S Practice: The Journey Of Three English Language Arts Teachers, Jessica Lynn Price
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, I sought to understand how naming one’s beliefs about teaching reading and writing impacted reading and writing practices. I used action research design (McNiff & Whitehead, 2010; Mills, 2011) to examine three teachers’ journeys as they gave name to their beliefs. I made audio recordings and transcriptions of small group sessions and interviews, observed teachers, asked for and collected teacher reflections, and kept a researcher’s journal. I used thematic analysis to identify patterns across data points. What I found varied for each participant, influenced by the degree that each participant was present and reflective throughout the process. …

Book Review: Rewired: Research-Writing Partnerships Within The Frameworks, Ann Agee
Faculty and Staff Publications
On many campuses, writing skills and research skills are supported in separate instructional silos. When it comes to college composition assignments, however, writing and research are interdependent, and this close relationship is evident in the many common elements shared by the Council of Writing Program Administrators (WPA) Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. How the core concepts in these frameworks interconnect and how librarians and writing instructors can work together to implement them in the classroom is the focus of Rewired.

Grammars And Rhetorics, Ian Cornelius
Grammars And Rhetorics, Ian Cornelius
English: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Grammar and rhetoric were the disciplines charged with teaching correct and effective use of language in antiquity. In the Middle Ages, these disciplines served to maintain Latin as a language of culture, religion, and administration over much of Europe. Grammatical studies flourished in medieval England following the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. Subsequent developments in grammatical and rhetorical studies in Britain in the Middle Ages track deep changes in the social conditioning of literacy and social demands upon literacy. Among the medieval English innovations in these disciplines were the teaching of Latin as a foreign language, the cultural accommodation …
Engendering Ethics Through Practice In The Project-Based Business Communciation Course, Jonathan H. Jackson
Engendering Ethics Through Practice In The Project-Based Business Communciation Course, Jonathan H. Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Business related degrees perennially make up roughly 20% of all college degrees awarded. At the same time, business ethics continues to be a much-discussed problem. I capitalize on the close connection between communication and ethics in order to offer a partial solution to the problem in the form of a project-based business communication class. After establishing a complementary view of business ethics, I go on to suggest the ethical focus for the project-based communication class. I then argue for the special suitability of business communication for such an approach, after which I go on to discuss the work of Wittgenstein …

“Present Mirth Hath Present Laughter; What's To Come Is Still Unsure”: Death And Humor In Early Modern England, Elisha James Sircy
Theses and Dissertations
This study focuses on the workings of humor in 16th-and 17th-century England, particularly in its proximity and deployment around death. Through Early Modern theoretical discussions of humor as well as utterances, historical tracts, poetry, and drama of the time, humor’s role in interrupting or breaking up particular modes of interpretation can be seen. Surveying Castiglione and Puttenham, records of martyred Catholics and Protestants, the poetry of Spenser and Donne, and the dramatic works of Shakespeare, I argue that humor operates as a sort of short-circuiting of a given audience expectation that allows for a potential divergence from previous assertions or …

Protecting Systems Of Nature And Gender: Ecofeminism In Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer And Ruth Ozeki's All Over Creation, Sarah J. Hirsch
All Student Theses and Dissertations
Ecofeminism has permeated the disciplines of politics, philosophy, science, and literature – all of which are embedded in the fiction of Barbara Kingsolver’s Prodigal Summer and Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation. In this thesis, I consider the authors’ use of scientific evidence to engage readers with their rhetorical goals of protecting the systems of nature and gender. In the first chapter, I define the history of ecofeminist activism and how Kingsolver and Ozeki continue its tradition. The second chapter considers the parallels between biodiversity and cultural diversity within both Prodigal Summer and All Over Creation. In the final chapter, I …
"White Men's Burdens?": A Study Of Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim, George Orwell's Burmese Days, And Graham Greene's The Quiet American As Reflections Of Three Phases Of Western Colonialism In Southeast Asia, Navarach Khamsuwan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Through the three chosen British novels, Western colonialism in Southeast Asia can be seen in three major phases: colonialism at its peak, colonialism during its decline and colonialism at its transformation. This thesis propounds that the roles and statuses of the white male characters (Jim, John Flory, Thomas Fowler and Alden Pyle) are established through their interactions with other characters, most of whom are women. The roles and statuses of these Western protagonists and their interactions with the people residing in the region of Southeast Asia can be seen to reflect three phases of Western colonialism. In Lord Jim (1899-1900), …

L2 Acquisition Of Wh-Operator Movement In English Open Interrogatives By L1 Thai Learners: A Case Of The Failed Functional Features Hypothesis, Pairoj Kunanupatham
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Based on the Failed Functional Features Hypothesis (FFFH) (Hawkins and Chan, 1997), the current study aims at investigating L1 Thai learners' acquisition of the wh-operator movement in English open interrogatives. Two primary objectives included (1) to explore whether the wh-operator movement in English can be acquired by L1 Thai learners and (2) to account for the data by the FFFH. Due to the non-existence of the strong uninterpretable [uwh] feature in Thai, it is hypothesized that L1 Thai learners of English fail to acquire English open interrogatives by means of the operator movement and that variability in English open interrogatives …

(Re)Mediating The Spirit: Evangelical Christian Young Adult Media, Tamara Watkins
Theses and Dissertations
"We are in the world, but not of the world," a maxim frequently spoken in evangelical Christian culture, provides insight into how these individuals view their relationship with secular culture. They presume to share the same temporal plane with secular culture, but do not participate in it. In this dissertation, I explore whether the division between evangelical Christian culture and secular culture is as clear as this aphorism implies. To facilitate this investigation, I examine media Christian content creators created for an American evangelical Christian young adult audience in the early twenty-first century, specifically focusing on novel-length fiction, comics and …
Theatrical Texts And Contexts: Poe And Hawthorne’S Fictional Women, Savannah M. Singletary
Theatrical Texts And Contexts: Poe And Hawthorne’S Fictional Women, Savannah M. Singletary
Theses and Dissertations
Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne are arguably two of the most highly read and heavily debated nineteenth-century antebellum authors in America. Their writings fascinate readers, while their character depictions, particularly their characterizations of fictional women, prompt intense academic debate. This thesis examines the previously less-studied historical developments surrounding Poe and Hawthorne in the antebellum era that shaped their approach to writing fiction. In particular, this study scrutinizes the effects of the development of a newly popular art form, ballet, the ascendency of female authorship, and the impact of American theatrical reform upon antebellum authors’ authorial faculties, especially Hawthorne and …
The Odcombian Climber: How Thomas Coryate Employed Media For Social Advantage, Julian T. Neuhauser
The Odcombian Climber: How Thomas Coryate Employed Media For Social Advantage, Julian T. Neuhauser
Theses and Dissertations
Thomas Coryate (1577?-1617), the writer, traveler and social climber, embraced various media in order to achieve social gains. This thesis surveys the content and materiality of writings by and about Coryate to investigate the nature of his sociability. The study begins by drawing on John Hoskyns’ (1566–1638) poem, “Convivium philosophicum,” to explore how Coryate used oral and social performance to create a unique form of sociability through which mockery is transmuted into praise. This thesis then addresses how Coryate’s sociability factored into the conflation of aspects of manuscript and print media in the production of the “Panegyricke Verses” that were …
