Ageing In Action: Hollywood’S Ageing Ensemble Action Hero Series, Philippa Gates
Ageing In Action: Hollywood’S Ageing Ensemble Action Hero Series, Philippa Gates
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
This paper explores the treatment of ageing in the ensemble action hero series RED (2010 and 2013) starring Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren and The Expendables (2010, 2012, and 2014) starring Sylvester Stallone and other 1980s action stars. These two series combine action with comedy to thematize two sets of issues in relation ageing—first, about competence and usefulness and, second, about meaningful relationships. In the RED series, these two overarching concerns are linked explicitly to ageing whereas, in the Expendables films, these concerns replace those about ageing. In other words, the Expendables series mainly ignores ageing and presents its heroes …
Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber
Border Insecurity: Reading Transnational Environments In Jim Lynch’S Border Songs, Jenny Kerber
English and Film Studies Faculty Publications
This article applies an eco-critical approach to contemporary American fiction about the Canada-US border, examining Jim Lynch’s portrayal of the British Columbia-Washington borderlands in his 2009 novel Border Songs. It argues that studying transnational environmental actors in border texts—in this case, marijuana, human migrants, and migratory birds—helps illuminate the contingency of political boundaries, problems of scale, and discourses of risk and security in cross-border regions after 9/11. Further, it suggests that widening the analysis of trans-border activity to include environmental phenomena productively troubles concepts of nature and regional belonging in an era of climate change and economic globalization. A Study In The Humor Of The Old Northeast: Joseph C. Neal's Charcoal Sketches And The Comic Urban Frontier Studies In American Humor, David E.E. Sloane
English Faculty Publications
Joseph C. Neal pioneered the urban frontier of the Old Northeast in depicting what he called "hard cases" from the Philadelphia slums in the long-overlooked Charcoal Sketches, first published in book form in 1838. His characters' inability to change with the times, their false and vulnerable toughness, and their urban vernacular language look forward to the humor of Mark Twain, political commentators, and radio and TV sitcoms. In Neal's work, the cash economy, the lightly ironic euphuistic character study, and metaphors of the city are used to describe the new social and ethical paradoxes of the urban-industrial world already emerging …

"Tale As Old As Time": The "Beauty And The Beast" Narrative As Vehicle For Social Resistance, Monica Williams
"Tale As Old As Time": The "Beauty And The Beast" Narrative As Vehicle For Social Resistance, Monica Williams
ETD Archive
While current criticism has discussed various versions of the “Beauty and the Beast” tale individually, none have traced any particular trends that have emerged within the tale as it has been revised over the centuries. One particular trend began in the eighteenth century, when Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont streamlined the tale from the oral tradition in order to utilize it for the moral education of young French girls. Along with this pedagogical goal, Beaumont also managed to critique Samuel Richardson’s Pamela and the abuse Pamela often suffered at the hands of Mr. B by revising her Beast character to act …

The Power To Overcome: The Resistance And Resiliency Of Black Motherhood, Nathan Full
The Power To Overcome: The Resistance And Resiliency Of Black Motherhood, Nathan Full
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Motherhood is not a monolithic experience. The intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class are integral facets that influence and control how one practices maternity, especially in a white hegemonic state. Further, control and choice serve as contributing factors, influencing the level of control women have over entering maternity and how a mother claims ties to her offspring. With these intersectional factors and control measures combined, motherhood is a complicated matter, one that influences how women practice maternity. The practice of motherhood is influenced by race, with black women experiencing a historical struggle in their relationships with motherhood. These difficulties …

"Where Nature Was Most Plain And Pure": The Sacred Locus Amoenus And Its Profane Threat In Andrew Marvell's Pastoral Poetry, James Brent King
MA in English Theses
This thesis attempts to contribute to the vast pool of scholarship on Andrew Marvell’s poetry by analyzing his use of the dichotomy between the sacred and the profane in five of his pastoral poems. This objective is accomplished by first examining the dichotomies use as it relates to the archetype of the sacred locus amoenus in the story of the garden of Eden in Genesis, in Hesiod’s account of the golden age, and in Virgil’s first Eclogue. After discussing these ancient texts, the focus turns toward Marvell’s “The Mower Against Gardens,” “Damon the Mower,” “The Mower to the Glowworms,” “The …
The Intrinsic Factors That Influence Successful College Writing, Kenneth Dean Carlstrom
The Intrinsic Factors That Influence Successful College Writing, Kenneth Dean Carlstrom
MA in English Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of several intrinsic or non-cognitive factors that can positively influence successful collegiate writing. Using college writing as a forum for exploring intrinsic traits such as curiosity, grit, self-efficacy, time management, organization, and a growth mindset, reveals success stories in this qualitative study. Since writing clearly connects to the vicissitudes students experience, it serves as an appropriate means of measuring intrinsic characteristics. This study entwines student experiences with cognitive theorists to generate benefits for students, high school teachers, and college professors. Through extension, the power of mentors, the growth mindset, and …
Colorblind: How Cable News And The “Cult Of Objectivity” Normalized Racism In Donald Trump’S Presidential Campaign, Amanda Leeann Shoaf
Colorblind: How Cable News And The “Cult Of Objectivity” Normalized Racism In Donald Trump’S Presidential Campaign, Amanda Leeann Shoaf
MA in English Theses
This thesis explores the connection between genre and the normalization of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump’s varied racist, sexist, and xenophobic comments during the height of the 2016 General Election. Examining the genre of cable news and the network CNN specifically, this thesis analyzes both the broad genre-specific elements and specific instances during CNN’s panel discussions where that normalization occurred. Combining Carolyn Miller’s framework for deconstructing genre, Classical rhetorical devices like stasis theory, Judith Butler’s interpretation of performativity, and pertinent political and historical context, this thesis highlights and examines the impact the “cult of objectivity” had on CNN’s normalization of Donald …

Excerpt: "I am standing in a funeral home in Wichita, Kansas, looking at my grandmother's face. It appears fuller than it did when I last saw it. When she was alive. Her gray hair is styled more formally than usual. Only her glasses look the same. Behind the lenses, however, her eyes show none of their usual sparkle, the way they seemed to twinkle when she made a joke or heard or read an insightful comment- or listened to me play my guitar. I am a junior in high school, and I have no clue how I'm going to go …

Pirandello And Satire. The Imaginary Journey Of Four Authors In Search Of A Character According To Charles Kenneth Scott Moncrieff (1889-1930), Stefano Giannini
Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics - All Scholarship
Drawing on a little-known work by Scott-Moncrieff, this article investigates Luigi Pirandello’s intellectual and literary reach across genres and space, from theater to pamphlets, from Italy to the English-speaking world. A talented writer and translator, Charles K. Scott-Moncrieff published “The Strange & Striking Adventures of Four Authors in Search of a Character” by P. G. Lear & L. O in 1926. The title of the pamphlet, and the acronym of the fictional author are references to Pirandello and to his Six Characters in Search of an Author. Scott-Moncrieff had all the documents in order to write about, or in …

Skeptically Optimistic, Moira Hammons
Skeptically Optimistic, Moira Hammons
Writing Center Analysis Papers
While many "soft" writing tutoring skills have helped Hammons in her classroom, she finds that not all tutoring skills transfer well to teaching. Hammons is complimentary of peer tutoring's emphasis on wait time, silence, and adapting to individual needs. However, she finds she does not need these skills as often in teaching because of the long-term relationship she has with her students. Hammons asserts that better student and tutor education on the purpose of writing centers--along with students visiting the same tutor repeatedly-- will help tutors and students make the most of their brief time together.
Learning To Write By Teaching Writing, Richard A. Blake
Learning To Write By Teaching Writing, Richard A. Blake
Writing Center Analysis Papers
Blake asserts that English teachers and writing tutors both strive to answer students' problems by addressing language skills, grammar, assignment requirements, and brainstorming. He warns that students' concerns must come first, even if teachers and tutors find alternative concerns in the students' writing. After helping students address their concerns more thoroughly, students can take advantage of writing center tutors to make more universal changes.

Age Perception And The Peer-Tutor Relationship, Cana Uluak Itchuaqiyaq
Writing Center Analysis Papers
As a non-traditional graduate student and peer writing tutor, Itchuaqiaq explores the challenges she and other older students encounter connecting with their much-younger undergraduate tutees. Itchuaquiq includes several reflections from other non-traditional graduate peer tutors that explain the struggles they face establishing an appropriate peer power balance. Additionally, Itchuaquiq calls for more writing center research on how age affects tutees' writing center perceptions and experiences.
Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
Expanding Transnational Frames Into Composition Studies: Revising The Rhetoric And Writing Minor At The American University In Cairo, James P. Austin
English Faculty Publications
This chapter examines U.S.-based approaches to curricular revision of the Rhetoric and Writing Minor at the American University in Cairo (AUC) through analysis of faculty interviews and relevant artifacts. Through this analysis, and consideration of AUC’s development in the context of changes in Egypt, the chapter argues that U.S.-based curricular approaches satisfied various local needs among AUC’s writing faculty and students. These findings complicate claims within international composition studies, which are concerned with non-reflective export of U.S. linguistic, pedagogical and program models into international sites. This chapter calls for expanding the perspective of U.S.-based approaches to composition studies to include …

Song Reconsidered: Words And Music, Music And Poetry, Lawrence Kramer
Song Reconsidered: Words And Music, Music And Poetry, Lawrence Kramer
Art History and Music Faculty Publications
This revised version of an essay first published in 1984 sustains the impetus of the original to upend the traditional understanding of song, in particular of art song, as a harmonious fusion of words and music. Song in general, and art songs or Lieder in particular with their generically mandated dependence on preexisting poetic texts, produces a much wider range of text-music relationships than mere fusion, many of them riddled with tension, cross-purposes, and even outright antagonism. Among song genres, the Lied stands out historically for giving prominence to the diversity of these relationships, starting in the early nineteenth century. …

Boxed Wine Feminisms: The Rhetoric Of Women’S Wine Drinking In The Good Wife, Tammie M. Kennedy
Boxed Wine Feminisms: The Rhetoric Of Women’S Wine Drinking In The Good Wife, Tammie M. Kennedy
English Faculty Publications
Two contending narratives about the drinking culture of women in the twenty-first century are represented by these opening quotations. On one hand, many feminists have distanced themselves from temperance rhetorics, opting instead to disrupt a traditional gender role associated with abstinence. On the other hand, the myriad of choices afforded by feminism and the increase in alcohol consumption among women have suggested that drinking practices are a reflection of the complexities of women’s roles in the new millennium. Some other critics go as far as blaming feminism for the increase in drinking. Regardless, drinking practices function rhetorically, pointing to “questions …
