Stolen Memories, Talaria Haast Feb 2017

Stolen Memories, Talaria Haast

The Tuxedo Archives

I was eight when I first tried my hand at deception (actually thievery, to be more specific). I was raised in a house with very strict food regulations. That sounds like it was terrible, but actually it was rather healthy. While other children ate Lunchables™ and cookies, my packed lunch usually consisted of tofu, carrots and a sandwich on wholewheat bread. This brought about issues from my classmates. While other kids were busy making sure their homework was complete and their uniforms were pristine every morning before school, I would carpool into school anticipating how my classmates were going to …

Movie Reviews- Unfaithful, Talaria Haast

The Tuxedo Archives

Okay, so honestly, the fact that this movie was way hot almost outweighed its flaws. Almost...but not quite.

So let’s begin with Richard Gere. First of all, I thought his initial reaction was accurate. Well, not accurate, because I can’t really back that up...but handled in what seemed to be a realistic way. His relationship with Diane Lane was logical up to the point where you believed that she cheated because they were just so mismatched. I don’t much see Gere as a romantic lead (even though some casting directors do), so I really could see Lane growing apart. ~excerpt …

No Drunken Frenzy, Kimberly Satterfield

The Tuxedo Archives

Chatter of cedar waxwings

is shrill this morning.

Must be fifty crested visitors,

scarlet-russet-gold breasts

glint iridescent. ~excerpt from the poem

Spin The Bottle, Jennifer Curtin Feb 2017

Spin The Bottle, Jennifer Curtin

The Tuxedo Archives

A bottle turns feverishly on its side

a compass searching north, east, west, yes

pointedly at a predestined angel

of crackled lips and sweaty pits

A tender moment of locked eyes searching

the other’s approval and first move

for the fated instant~excerpt from the poem

Raquel, Ann Rathie Feb 2017

Raquel, Ann Rathie

The Tuxedo Archives

I finally cut off my long red hair.

What a problem that was,

trailing behind me,

dragging on the ground attracting all that attention.

Swains swanning all around.

Rapunzel, I love you,

Rapunzel be mine,

Rapunzel let me wrap myself in your hair!~ excerpt from the poem

It’S About The Journey: Lewis On Heroes And Personality In Out Of The Silent Planet, Jillianne L. Hook Feb 2017

It’S About The Journey: Lewis On Heroes And Personality In Out Of The Silent Planet, Jillianne L. Hook

The Kabod

In his novels, Lewis’s heroes come from humble beginnings and are shaped by circumstances until Lewis is satisfied with them; that is, until they reach their full potential. This draws on his belief that humans only attain true personality by surrendering their personalities to God, who then shapes them into true sons: “The more we get what we now call ‘ourselves’ out of the way and let Him take us over, the more truly ourselves we become.”

Language Teachers’ Evaluation Of Curriculum Change: A Qualitative Study, Seyyed Ali Ostovar-Namaghi Feb 2017

Language Teachers’ Evaluation Of Curriculum Change: A Qualitative Study, Seyyed Ali Ostovar-Namaghi

The Qualitative Report

This study aims at theorizing language teachers’ evaluation of a top-down curriculum change by eliciting their perspectives through open-ended qualitative interviews. In line with grounded theory procedures, concepts and categories were theoretically sampled from the perspective of participants who were willing to share their views with the researcher. Iterative data collection and analysis revealed a set of categories which show the conflict of interest between practitioners and policy-makers. Practitioners focus on immediate classroom concerns and reject the syllabus change because of its lack of small-scale try-outs, inappropriate timing, vague methodology, inappropriate in-service program, learner homogeneity fallacy, unrealistic expectations and increased …

Indigeneity And Early American Literature, Andrew Newman Feb 2017

Indigeneity And Early American Literature, Andrew Newman

Department of English Faculty Publications

Summary Indigeneity is the abstract noun form of “indigenous,” defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as “Born or produced naturally in a land or region”; in conventional usage, it refers primarily to “aboriginal inhabitants or natural products.” Indigeneity has a conceptually complex relationship to American literary history before 1830, insofar as, for most of the history of the field, “early American literature” has predominately referred to works written in European languages, scripts, and genres, produced by peoples of European origin and their descendants. Within this framework, until Native Americans began adopting and adapting these languages, scripts, and genres for their …

Ecologies Of The Passions In Early Modern English Tragedies, Roya Biggie Feb 2017

Ecologies Of The Passions In Early Modern English Tragedies, Roya Biggie

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Ecologies of the Passions recovers a neglected model for understanding early modern relationality, one that turns the seemingly inward experience of emotion outward toward the environment. Drawing on early modern medical texts, I argue that the period’s dramatists imagine bodies as humorally vulnerable to other bodies, both human and nonhuman, within dynamically affective environments. As such, my project illustrates the intimate configurations of human and nonhuman life in early modern tragedies. Building upon recent work in the emerging fields of ecocriticism and affect theory, I argue that the period’s dramatic literature exposes the porous fluidity of the Galenic body—its embeddedness …

The Short Story And The Photographic: Twentieth-Century Imagetexts In And Of The Americas, Lucienne Muller

This analysis draws from photographic theory and from the writings of photographer and writer Julio Cortazar whose philosophy puts forward the idea of a reader who becomes the inventive co-creator of the fictional work.

The Fantastic Manifesto: Monstrosity Of Memory And Epiphany Of Selfhood In The Spirit Of The Beehive (1973), Layla Blodgett Carrillo Feb 2017

The Fantastic Manifesto: Monstrosity Of Memory And Epiphany Of Selfhood In The Spirit Of The Beehive (1973), Layla Blodgett Carrillo

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Spanish culture of storytelling suffered under the nearly forty-year dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The government-regulated cinema welcomed propaganda and melodrama, and denied the fantastic, the legendary, and the magical. These carefully manipulated histories, which served to romanticize the ideologies of the regime, also served to eulogize the delinquent and the depraved. In the early 1970s, at the heels of the collapse of Franco’s reign, the people of Spain bore witness to a new national cinema. The Spirit of the Beehive (1973), the feature debut from Victor Erice, exists at the threshold between a storied history of Spanish dictatorship and …

Intelligent Bodies And Embodied Minds: Reading Religious Performance In Middle English Writing From Syon Abbey, Nicholas Love, William Langland, And John Gower, Paul Holchak Feb 2017

Intelligent Bodies And Embodied Minds: Reading Religious Performance In Middle English Writing From Syon Abbey, Nicholas Love, William Langland, And John Gower, Paul Holchak

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation argues for a new reading of the relationship that texts have to performance, bodies have to agency, and that social construction has to literary criticism as these matters relate to the study of religious practice in late medieval England. The project first asks what it meant to participate in religious practice in two, early fifteenth-century Middle English prose texts, The Myroure of Oure Ladye and The Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ. The former work is a gloss of the Divine Service performed by the Brigittine sisters at Syon Abbey, and the latter consists of …

Brenkman Explains The Art Behind Writing Novels., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

J.R.R. Tolkien, the famous author of The Lord of the Rings, once said that “Not all those who wander are lost,” and there are many examples of university professors who have tried different elds and have been able to shine in more than one of them.

That is the case with Dr. John Brenkman. Al- though he is an expert on novels, he began his career in a different eld. “I probably had more emphasis on poetry and philosophy than I did on the novel,” says this native of Peoria, Illinois. “Then, sometime in the mid to late 80’s, I …
