Coming To An Understanding: Daoist Rhetoric As Dialogue In Composition Studies, Veronica Anzaldua

Theses and Dissertations

Monological argumentation, based on Aristotelian principles, dominates composition pedagogy in the United States. With this model, students construct arguments in which they advocate for their own viewpoints. To make argumentation more dialogic, there exist various discourse models, including Daoist rhetoric, based on the ancient Chinese philosophy of Daoism. Its tenets have the potential to generate dialogic discourse in composition due to Laozi’s, Zhuangzi’s, and Sunzi’s principles. The recent cultural turn in composition studies opens space for the exploration of dialogic pedagogy. Dialogic pedagogies based on Daoist philosophies, with other recent pedagogical innovations, have the potential to promote deep, interconnected dialogue …

The period from 1799 through 1929 marks a remarkable era of development for gothic themes in American mystery and investigative fiction. From early “mysteries of detection” through more structurally formalized detective stories, this project examines the differences in the gothic modes and devices employed by Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, Anna Katharine Green, Mark Twain, and Dashiell Hammett, and their significant contributions to the progression of the popular gothic detective genre. This is a creative thesis comprised of three short stories centered on the experiences of three Navajo protagonists living on the Navajo reservation. The short stories fit within the field of Native American Literature and highlight issues of mortality, sexuality, and ceremony. The stories illustrate the experiences of modern-day Navajo youth grappling to understand how to connect traditional knowledge with modernity. The three stories featured within this thesis are offered as a way to understand these challenges. Each protagonist is faced with an issue of morality, sexuality, or ceremony, and each reach differing conclusions about these topics within their lives. …

Discusses John Bristed's "facetious, digressive" memoir, Anthroplanomenos (1803), about a walking tour through the Highlands of lScotland in 1801 by two young students "disguised as American sailors, with little money and no identity papers,” describing their adventures and misadventures as they encountered suspicion, hostility and sometimes surprising kindness; brings out the two travellers’ often-self-contradictory responses to what they saw and experienced; and shows how the tour contributed to their changing political perspective, mirroring the turn away from 1790s radicalism in better-known writers in the same years. Discusses Muriel Spark's “international comedy of manners” Territorial Rights (1979), both as a heavily-plotted and "starkly-realistic" thriller about a wouldbe criminal in Venice who challenges an American millionaire, till both are defeated by the machinations of the secretive agency GESS, and in terms of Park's satirical view on western moral decadence and metafictional concerns, arguing that the narrator’s apparently limited omniscience brings together a compelling polyphony of characters, rendering events through their individual, unreliable, and often contradictory points of view.

Describes and illustrates a newly-identified fragment (final page) of a letter to Robert Burns in April 1793 from George Thomson, editor of the Select Collection of Original Scotish Songs, in the Newberry Library, Chicago, discusses the date of the letter and of the Burns song "The Soger's Return" on the letter verso, and reviews the implication of the manuscript for the sequence of letters in the Thomson-Burns correspondence.

Philadelphia, PA: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2016.The review praises Wickman's "extraordinary book," designed to “throw a wrench into grand narratives about modernity,” summarizing its wide-ranging argument about the centrality of spatial, visual and geometric thought in what Wickman calls "the long looping eighteenth century," in Scottish philosophy, education and literature, and commenting briefly on the implications of Wickman's argument for "how literary canons are made" and "the dynamics of disciplines."
