Mary Akers is the author of the short-story collection Women Up On Blocks, which won the 2010 IPPY gold medal for short fiction. She was awarded a 2012 Pushcart Special Mention and won the 2011 American Pen Women Mary Mackey Short Story Prize for her story, “Viewing Medusa.” She has been the editor of r.kv.r.y since 2010 and lives in Western New York with her family.

What has always stuck with me about the VIDA count isn’t the statistics themselves—horrid but not, if you’re from any underrepresented group, shocking—but the discussion, mostly anecdotal, of how women are not repeat submitters to literary magazines; men are more likely to send out again once they’ve been rejected. This was me: I have many kind rejections, years old, that say “please send again,” or “we’d like to see more work,” and yet, I didn’t.

The Black Lives Matter movement first started in 2013 by three strong African Americans women: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi. The movement was created after black lives were being taken by police officers in shootings that could have been deescalated.
