The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros Apr 2002

The Casasola Legacy In El Paso, Samuel E. Sisneros

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

This article brings to light the historical context of El Paso’s unknown and uncelebrated connection to the legendary Casasola family photo dynasty in Mexico. The local El Paso Casasola portrait studio photographer and owner did not capture iconic Mexican Revolutionary images like those of his contemporary famed photographer family members in Mexico City, but instead he recorded the visual memory of ordinary individuals and families residing in the US/Mexico border region.

Net Art And Process: Some Thoughts On Curatorial Practice, Alena Williams Feb 2002

Net Art And Process: Some Thoughts On Curatorial Practice, Alena Williams

SWITCH

The article points out that publicly accessible net art challenges museum practice. As the web is increasingly integrated into artistic creation, the launching of exhibitions and the building of archives has become a creative practice. A case in point was the 2001 biennial, "Beau Monde: Towards a Redeed Cosmopolitanism," curated by Dave Hickey. It links the curator's name to the exhibition, so that the curators can be as prestigious as the artists they exhibit. Another example is Rhizome ArtBase, a new media art platform developed for Rhizome's net art community. Which encourages artists to invent new strategies for bridging, nullifying …

Analytical Photography: Portraiture, From The Index To The Epidermis, Ken Gonzales-Day Jan 2002

Analytical Photography: Portraiture, From The Index To The Epidermis, Ken Gonzales-Day

Scripps Faculty Publications and Research

The current abundance of scholarship concerning the technological development of photography has coexisted with a proportionate absence of recent critical analysis of photographic images. Given photography's long-standing embrace of technological advances, even predating the portable camera or roll film, this article revisits some early uses of scientific photography in order to clarify the impact of digital technology on contemporary photographic practice. The author uses scientific photography and photographic archives as the groundwork for photographic experiments into what might be called analytical photography. This essay concludes with a reconsideration of the photographic portrait.

Geometric Patterns And The Interpretation Of Meaning: Two Monuments In Iran, Carol Bier Jan 2002

Geometric Patterns And The Interpretation Of Meaning: Two Monuments In Iran, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

The Alhambra has often served in the West as the paradigm for understanding geometric pattern in Islamic art. Constructed in Spain in the 13th century as a highly defended palace, it is a relatively late manifestation of an Islamic fascination with geometric pattern. Numerous earlier Islamic buildings, from Spain to India, exhibit extensive geometric patterning, which substantiate a mathematical interest in the spatial dimension and its manifold potential for meaning. This paper examines two monuments on the Iranian plateau, dating from the 11 th century of our era, in which more than one hundred exterior surface areas have received patterns …

Introduction To Doris Duke's Shangri La By Sharon Littlefield, Carol Bier Jan 2002

Introduction To Doris Duke's Shangri La By Sharon Littlefield, Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

SHANGRI LA, the most intimate of Doris Duke's residences, is the one that today offers the best view into the private domain of a public celebrity. What it reveals about Doris Duke presents a strong contrast to her well-publicized persona as a tobacco heiress, born to wealth, who liked to frolic. Observe the house, spilling down terraces of Ka'alawai toward the sea; contemplate its well-considered vistas and its polished black lava, white marble, and coral limestone surfaces. Admire the architectural features shipped from abroad and installed on site; experience the gardens with their towering trees, sparkling water chutes, and placid …

Pemikiran Melayu Dalam Seni Ukiran Kayu : Tumpuan Kepada Tiga Generasi Pengukir, Mohammad Nazzri Ahmad Jan 2002

Pemikiran Melayu Dalam Seni Ukiran Kayu : Tumpuan Kepada Tiga Generasi Pengukir, Mohammad Nazzri Ahmad

Student Works (2000-2009)

Review Of Stillman, Arab Dress: A Short History, From The Dawn Of Islam To Modem Times., Carol Bier Jan 2002

Review Of Stillman, Arab Dress: A Short History, From The Dawn Of Islam To Modem Times., Carol Bier

Textile Research Works

Arab Dress: A Short History, From the Dawn of Islam to Modem Times. By YADIDA KALFON STILLMAN. Edited by NORMAN A. STILLMAN. Themes in Islamic Studies, vol. 2. Leiden: BRILL, 2000. Pp. xxxii + 240, plates, figs.

Billowing folds, exquisite pleats, tightly wound turbans, flowing burqas, short square kerchiefs-the dramatic drapery of Islamic fashion fills the quiet spaces of our daily news coverage; yet the garments illustrated and their significance often pass without verbal notice. Little would Yedida Stillman ever have anticipated the widespread presence of the Islamic vestimentary system in Western media a short three years after her death …

The Mind Museum: Rudolf Schwarzkogler And The Vienna Actionists, Philip Barnes Jan 2002

The Mind Museum: Rudolf Schwarzkogler And The Vienna Actionists, Philip Barnes

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[Sixth paragraph]

In the following essay I discuss the Austrian artist Rudolf Schwarzkogler. I have enjoyed the process of ferreting out articles and references to him, although these are seemingly as scarce as his own artistic output. Schwarzkogler spent just 2 years staging performance-actions in his apartment in the 1960s. These methodically photographed scenes involved sliced fish, bandages, light bulbs, razor blades, foodstuffs and surgical apparatus, all manipulated by anonymous figures. The photographs, works of art in their own right, have since toured internationally. Schwarzkogler was the least outgoing of a group called the Viennese Actionists, whose orgiastic, bloody Happenings …
