Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger Apr 2009

Mind Vs. Media: A Civil War Between Typography And The Mediated Image, Elizabeth J. Neffinger

Senior Honors Theses

The past thirty years have marked the start of a new kind of civil war in our digitally powered American society. There is a deep chasm between the cry for the lost art of typography and the mediated power of the Image. We are a culture battling a war in our own heads, attempting to assimilate Images without replacing the need for a written text.

This thesis will argue that the mediated Image is not a death sentence to critical thinking; rather it is an undeniable, inescapable power that can be used to positively influence our culture. It will research …

The Beauty Of Arabic Script: Tracing The Artistic Significance Of The Arabic Letter In Morocco, Sarah C. Malin Apr 2009

The Beauty Of Arabic Script: Tracing The Artistic Significance Of The Arabic Letter In Morocco, Sarah C. Malin

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper explores the reference to traditional Moroccan craftwork in contemporary art, specifically in the microcosm of the incorporation of Arabic letters in contemporary painting. The line between craft and art, calligraphy and symbols is examined. What is the purpose of these designs and what meaning do they carry? Through interviews with five artists that employ this technique as well as conversations with other members of the art community, it was found that the artistic significance of these letters has changed throughout history. In the past, calligraphy, although containing some embellishing flair, emphasized the literal linguistic and religious meaning in …

Redrawing The Walls: Street Art In Belgrade, Emily Levitt

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research examines street art in Belgrade as a means of changing the political, social, and cultural atmosphere of Belgrade, Serbia. The research data was collected through semi-structured interviews in the Spring of 2009. Students, artists, and former artists were interviewed in order to collect data. In addition, participant observation and visual analysis contributed to and gave context to the interview based data. Ultimately, it was discovered …

Graffiti En Managua: Una Expresión Democrática De La Juventud Nicaragüense, Katie Laroque

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Semiotics, or the philosophical study of signs and symbols, makes us rethink the familiar and the things we take for granted. If someone walks to work everyday on the same street, after time he will probably stop thinking about the graffiti on the corner. Graffiti is probably something that most of us take for granted, or hardly see anymore, but I argue that its role in society must be rethought. What does graffiti on the wall represent? It is a manifestation of the ideas and beliefs of the artist, as well as a reflection of his artistic talent. When several …

Signing Off On The State, Amanda J. Allerding Mar 2009

Signing Off On The State, Amanda J. Allerding

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis provides a contextual analysis of my creative practice as a visual artist. An overview of the social and historical relationships of the individual in societal organisations, and in relation to what Stuart Hall refers to as tendential lines of force, the dominant structures of religion and the state (Hall, 1996), set the context for a selfreflexive analysis of my practice. In carrying out a contextual analysis of my practice, it is the intention of this thesis to map a context by which Australian national identity is manufactured. This context is the hegemonic processes that seek to maintain a …

School Play, Ronan Mccrea Jan 2009

School Play, Ronan Mccrea

Exhibitions

School Play was the outcome of a public art commission associated with the construction of a new school building for a state primary school, catering for children from ages 4 – 12. School Play consists of two main elements: a series of thirty colour photographs and a permanent design for a school play yard consisting of a series of graphic set of circles and arcs applied in various colours onto the tarmac and also adjacent footpaths and car park. This element of the work has a dual function: primarily as utilitarian design– acting as boundaries and markings for un-prescribed play …

Singing The Moly Blues: The Direct Use Of Molybdenum Clusters As A Precursor To The Development Of Molybdenum Blue Glazes, Margaret Fiedler Jan 2009

Singing The Moly Blues: The Direct Use Of Molybdenum Clusters As A Precursor To The Development Of Molybdenum Blue Glazes, Margaret Fiedler

Undergraduate Review

Cobalt is currently the most commonly used blue colorant for ceramic glazes, however due to its toxicity in powder form there is a need for an alternative. Molybdenum, more specifically molybdenum oxide, is one alternative that has shown promise. This research is aimed at the direct incorporation of reduced molybdenum clusters into the glaze matrix. Two compounds have been synthesized that exhibit an intense blue color, Na15[MoVI126MoV28O457H14(H2O)70]0.5-[MoVI124MoV28O427H14(H2O)68]0.5 …

Der Gebrochene Rücken: A Variation Of The German Case Binding, Peter D. Verheyen Jan 2009

Der Gebrochene Rücken: A Variation Of The German Case Binding, Peter D. Verheyen

Librarian Publications

The “gebrochene rücken” is variant of the German case “Bradel” binding, something often described as the quintessential German binding structure. It is precise and adaptive to a variety of needs and aesthetic considerations can be worked “in boards” or as a case. Its closest modern relative is the simplified binding (reliure simplifée) as demonstrated by Sün Evrard and Laura Wait. While there are structural differences (that are not as great as one would think given that one is German and the other French), what both these bindings have in common is that they allow for the use of different covering …
