A Divine Comedy of Errors: Political Paintings by Saira Wasim
Paradoxes of Genre: the Epic Miniature
Teeming with figures captured in mid-action, paintings by Saira Wasim present grand narratives. If it weren’t for their petite size and two-dimensionality, they might be mistaken for Greek mythology, Baroque opera, epic film, or other monumental genres. Yet, these small paintings represent a singular creation, one that transcends any individual medium or genre. In Wasim’s hands, the centuries-old format of the miniature painting has been transformed into a stage for human drama, a jam-packed cinematic space that approaches the grandeur of Cecil B. DeMille …

CGU MFA Theses
My art is the foundation I use to commune with myself and bridge the gap to the rest of the world. A gap created by everyday being surrounded by information, so much so that it is easy to become numb. I do not want, because of my inability to filter the relentless onslaught of information, to walk through life tuned off. All that undigested knowledge leaves me feeling distant from myself and unable to connect with others. This leaves me with the sensation of not knowing myself.

In my work I examine how and where nature and culture collide, merge, overlap or become one. Ultimately my goal is to draw attention to the ways we perceive and remember nature as well as ho w we experience the natural landscape in opposition to built environments. I am also interested in how our relation to these spaces changes over time and how we might envision these environments in the not-s o-distant future.

I use painting as a form of ritual and meditation where I often spend lots of time painting and repeating simple marks over and over again. On occasion, I am able to make quick paintings that are successful but most of the time I am compelled to spend repetitive hours making marks in order to reach my state of personal mediation through the ritual of painting. Please see Download button in top right corner for the full statement.

Minority Report, Tan Jazz Mont
CGU MFA Theses
I make large, colorful, messy figurative paintings that tell stories and celebrate the underdog. I use found objects, as well as wood panels and canvases. The poetry of the street plays an important role in my art; from what I paint on, to what I paint with, to my subject matter, my art conveys both liberation and pride toward my Hispanic culture. When I create, I allow the paint to be true to its physical properties. I am aggressive and free in my painting and mark-making. If my paintings begin to appear “sophisticated,” I find ways to manipulate them. I …

Posters Protesting Drug Violence In Juárez, México, Anne Giangiulio
Selected Works Temporary Series
I designed the posters 'Juárez: Once a City, Now Statistics' and 'Stop the Violence in Juárez' originally for 'Peace of Art: Design for Change' (www.peaceofartshow.org). This exhibit presents posters of social protest designed by professional and student designers to create awareness of the situation of violence in Cd, Juarez. To give a face to the violence and help people understand that the violence changes people’s lives. It is a display of Peace and/or protest on both sides of the border. More importantly, Peace of Art raises funds that will aid Cd. Juarez victims and their families. Both posters were later …
Searching For California's Hang Trees, Ken Gonzales-Day
Searching For California's Hang Trees, Ken Gonzales-Day
Scripps Faculty Publications and Research
Also known as the Hang Tree Series, this was part of Ken Gonzales-Day's eight year project to search for, and photograph, possible, probably, and verifiable lynching sites in California. Perhaps most significantly, his project included the discovery and documentation of over 350 cases of lynching in the state of California between 1850 and 1935. Contrary to the popular image of 'cowboy justice' and Wild West vigilantism as being an exclusively white-on-white crime, Gonzales-Day was able to document, that in California, the majority (nearly two thirds) of cases of vigilantism involved the lynching of African Americans, Native Americans, Chinese, and Latinos …
