Accordingly, the inquiry employed a qualitative design and a multiple case-study approach. Data collection methods included: (a) interviews, (b) image artifacts, and (c) researcher reflective memos. Don't Worry, Patricia L. Davis Apr 2016

Don't Worry, Patricia L. Davis

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

When I was really young something at the core of my being whispered to me, “she won’t live very long.” At the time I didn’t know where that voice was coming from, but I knew it was true. It was unsettling. Over the years I realized that I was being prepared for the eventuality of my mother’s death and that I wouldn’t know when or how it would happen. When it did occur, suddenly I knew there was nothing between death and me but time. This thought has haunted me to the point that I have developed a fear of …

The Art Of Exile: A Narrative For Social Justice In A Modern World, Dakota D. Homsey Apr 2016

The Art Of Exile: A Narrative For Social Justice In A Modern World, Dakota D. Homsey

Student Publications

In this paper I will illustrate what exile art is, how it is influenced on a global platform, and the change it engenders. My research reveals a central theme of globalization in the exchange, mix, and clash of cultures and political views that accompany it as well as the spread of art and ideas. In my research I illustrate how political circumstance, and sense of responsibility to share a political narrative, propelled exile art from a personal to a political narrative. My research illustrates how, as displaced people stripped of a homeland, exiled artists have surfaced as a voice of …

Lens On Habitat Destruction: A Photo Essay In Double Exposure, Bethany Holtz Apr 2016

Lens On Habitat Destruction: A Photo Essay In Double Exposure, Bethany Holtz

Student Publications

Human greed and ignorance bulldoze through nature, leaving behind scarred landscapes and broken ecosystems. Within the world’s aquatic environments, human actions have irreversibly fragmented and shattered habitats of countless animals. Voiceless, these displaced animals suffer largely in silence—their stories untold and invisible. Using my lens to expose their cries, my photography uncovers the narrative of habitat destruction.

In this photo essay, I juxtapose the pristine and degraded habitats of five threatened aquatic species using double exposure techniques, a method where two disconnected images are merged to create one unified work. By balancing light, opacity, color, and transparency, I focus attention …

Cultivating Creative Spiritual Leadership: The Role Of Art-Making As A Spiritual Practice For Ministers Apr 2016

Cultivating Creative Spiritual Leadership: The Role Of Art-Making As A Spiritual Practice For Ministers

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

The findings suggest that the practice of art-making serves as a vehicle for personal and communal spiritual development for these religious leaders. The practice requires discipline, preparation, and immersion in process. It involves practicing presence, attending, and embracing vulnerability. Engaging in creative activity as a spiritual practice produces spiritual and bodily shifts which heighten an awareness of interconnectedness. Thus, it makes space for encounter—with oneself, God, and others.

An Artists Enemy: Explorations Into The End Of Artmaking, Dhalia Galdamez Mar 2016

An Artists Enemy: Explorations Into The End Of Artmaking, Dhalia Galdamez

Undergraduate Research Conference

Art has never been a simple thing to do for many people. This paper will touch on the difficulties that people face when making art, and the many reasons that make people stop. Fear of being judged is a very normal human feeling, but it has constantly stopped people from realizing their potential. There was a time when, as children or adolescents we would make things and show them off proudly. We lost that innocence as we began to grown up and this is a very crucial part of why as adults, we let our fear get in the way …

Lara Salmon, Thesis Statement, Lara Salmon

CGU MFA Theses

My art brings together materials and ideas inspired by personal experience that do not usually exist side by side. My body is the primary mechanism with which I make work, incidentally making me the subject matter of the work. I use my physical self as an instrument to coalesce and transform other materiality. Through live performance and photographic installations I create tension and balance between crude biology and bright, polished formalism. This body of work focuses on Millennial Feminism and the Middle East.

Temporal, Keith Armstrong Mar 2016

Temporal, Keith Armstrong

Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language

The interactive artwork Temporal arose from a series of art-science investigations with some of Australia’s leading flying fox ecologists. It was designed as a gently evolving meditation upon the complex, periodic processes that mark Australia’s often irregular seasonal changes. These changes directly govern the migratory movements of Australia’s keystone pollinating mammals—the mega bats (or, Flying Foxes). Temporal further calls attention to our increasing capacity to profoundly disturb these partners within Australia’s complex, life-supporting systems.

Enekas, Shabnam Yousefian Mar 2016

Enekas, Shabnam Yousefian

CGU MFA Theses

My works are all a reflection of my own life, beliefs, experiences and goal. For me art is an oasis of opportunities. It allows me to utilize my innate abilities and imaginations without any obstructions.

I am drawn to painting because of its capacity to reflect the world I live in. My goal is to demonstrate the fact that what is done in life has a reflection on us as well as our surrounding environment. My paintings are abstractions of the real places. Reflection implies clarity; however it is unclear at the same time. To me reflection is clearer than …

Exploring Family Heritage And Personal Space To Find Meaning And Content In Student Art, Rebecca Link Wilhelm Mar 2016

Exploring Family Heritage And Personal Space To Find Meaning And Content In Student Art, Rebecca Link Wilhelm

The research was informed through an arts-based inquiry with a/r/tographic influence. It was a qualitative inquiry, mining the familiar for development of a curriculum rich in context and personal significance for students. This …

Pattern, Ritual And Thresholds, Jessica Amber Egbert Mar 2016

Pattern, Ritual And Thresholds, Jessica Amber Egbert

Theses and Dissertations

The work in this show reflects my interest in the role of the ceramic vessel historically as well as its place in the dialogue of contemporary art. Traditionally thought of as an object of craft and function, the vessel has found footing also as a conceptual container of ideas and artistic expression. It teeters on the threshold between craft and art, between art and life. Because of its strong association with the domestic, I find the vessel to be a fitting form on which to paint ornamental patterns and imagery associated with my own home life and to put into …
