Do Green Buildings Influence People's Lifestyle Decisions And Support For Environmental Policy?, Amanda L. Popken
Planning Theses - Archive
This thesis explores the possibility that experience with green buildings influences peoples' behavior in ways that help bridge the gap between, on one hand, public concern for the natural environment and on the other hand, willingness to adopt sustainable lifestyles and support pro-environmental policies. The study utilizes research on factors that influence behavior to construct a theoretical model in which these factors might be influenced by a person's experience in a green building. The study explores two specific possibilities of behavioral change: people may change their consumption habits to reflect a more sustainable lifestyle; people may change their political behavior …

Growth/Decline Of Employment Subcenter In Polycentric Regions: The Case Of The Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, Maher Sayel Al-Shammari
Planning Dissertations - Archive
This research is concerned with explaining the variation in growth rates among employment subcenters. The purpose of the study is to find answers to the question: What factors/variables contribute to the growth or decline of employment subcenters? More specifically, the study aims to 1) identify and describe employment subcenters in the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and 2) explain the variation in their growth rate over a specified period of time through testing a set of variables extracted from related literature. A multiple regression analysis technique is employed to complete the empirical analysis. The DFW metropolitan area was chosen as a …
Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
Stormwater Quality And Local Government Innovation, Stacey Swearingen White, Michael R. Boswell
City and Regional Planning
Local governments need innovative practices to address nonpoint source pollution, which has proven to be the Achilles heel of efforts to improve surface water quality in the United States. Studies by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that 45% of assessed lakes and 39% of assessed rivers in the nation are polluted, and that agricultural and urban runoff were the primary sources of these problems (EPA, 2000, 2002). New approaches to address runoff are clearly necessary, and their success will depend on local government practices, yet we know little about how and why local governments innovate, particularly in response …

Incorporating Neighborhood Social Patterns Into Neighborhood Planning Models, Paul Duggan
Incorporating Neighborhood Social Patterns Into Neighborhood Planning Models, Paul Duggan
All Theses
ABSTRACT
Neighborhood models and patterns are used by developers, planners, and urban designers to plan new neighborhoods and guide the revitalization of older ones. Models are typically based on theories about ideal communities and frequently include significant social objectives.
Comparing neighborhood models with studies of neighborhood life, reveals that neighborhood social and behavioral patterns do not always fit the plan or social objectives of the proposed neighborhood models. There is a gap between the objectives and vision of the models and the patterns of life in the neighborhood. Social patterns such as neighboring, urban cognition, travel preferences and personal meaning …

RENEW CITIES TO BE THE ENGINES OF GROWTH
PIDE Cities Research Programme was initiated in Karachi with a conference titled Cities: the Engine of Growth on November 15-16, 2006. The conference was held in our largest city and was well-attended by economists, architects, town planners, Nazims, government officials, NGOs, journalists, and other citizens. The discussion was animated and about twenty-five speakers addressed the gathering. All points of view were represented and debated. The main points of the discussion that took place there may be summarised as follows: • All segments of our society are dissatisfied with the current state of …

The Impact Of Combined Maternal Alcohol And Tobacco Use On Low Birth Weight In Singleton Pregnancies : A Population Based Study In The Us, 2003, Della A. Campbell
The Impact Of Combined Maternal Alcohol And Tobacco Use On Low Birth Weight In Singleton Pregnancies : A Population Based Study In The Us, 2003, Della A. Campbell
Dissertations
Background: The Black-White disparity in birth outcomes in the United States remains embedded. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines low birth weight (LBW) as birthweight less than 2500 grams/5.5 pounds or below the 10th percentile for gestational age. LBW is a frequent marker of poor maternal/infant health outcome. A reduction in the incidence of LBW is a major public health initiative in the US. Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the magnitude of risk for low birth weight, defined in this study as neonatal birth weight less than 2500 grams, in relation to combined maternal alcohol and …
Reservoir Sedimentation And Property Values, Ronald Leftwich Jr.
Reservoir Sedimentation And Property Values, Ronald Leftwich Jr.
All Theses
This thesis uses multiple regression analysis in the determination of two hedonic models to explain the impact that sedimentation and algal bloom events may have on property values along Lake Greenwood, SC. Utilizing different independent variables, the hedonic equations reflect the market value and the sales price of the selected lakeside properties. With an average 4.6 percent of the original lake area lost to accreted sediment, the models show a $7,800 to nearly $10,000 average loss in property value or an estimated $5 to $6 million in value lost within the study area. Properties sold within a two-year period following …

Campus Commuting: Barriers To Walking And Bicycling Use In A University Town, Benjamin Miller
Campus Commuting: Barriers To Walking And Bicycling Use In A University Town, Benjamin Miller
All Theses
Policy makers frequently express a desire to increase the use of non-motorized modes of transportation for commuting. However, walking and bicycling are only viable commuting modes if people live within acceptable distances of their destination and transportation networks can safely accommodate pedestrians or bicyclists. This research uses a combination of stated maximum-acceptable commute times for walking and bicycling and an assessment of the suitability of the transportation network to develop walking and bicycling commute catchments from which a person could be reasonably expected to commute to a destination by walking or bicycling. Identifying commute catchments such as these then allowed …
The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack
The World Changed Today: A Ten Year Reflection For A Climate Changing World, Paul Wack
City and Regional Planning
In this article Paul Wack offers us a reflection on two of the most important issues for the planning profession: climate change and the public’s short attention span. He starts by addressing a 1895 poem depicting an optimistic view of the future which the late musician John Denver used to recite during his concerts, and in which Paul finds much inspiration for his classes. The article also ties into the next one, titled “Hot Topic”, dealing with the same theme and originally published in the APA’s Planning magazine.
