Embedded Piezoelectric Fiber Composite Sensors For Applications In Composite Structures, Hari Prasad Konka 2011 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Embedded Piezoelectric Fiber Composite Sensors For Applications In Composite Structures, Hari Prasad Konka

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Health monitoring of the composite structures is an important issue that must be addressed. Embedded sensors could be an effective way to monitor the health of composite structures continuously and which could also avoid the catastrophic failures of composite structures. Piezoelectric-fiber-composite sensors (PFCS) made from micro-sized Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) fibers have great advantages over the traditional bulk PZT sensors for embedded sensor applications. PFCS as an embedded sensor will be an ideal choice to continuously monitor the stress/strain levels and health conditions of composites. This work presents a critical study on using PFCS as an effective embedded sensor within …

Thermophysical Characterization Of Nanofluids Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, John Shelton 2011 University of South Florida

Thermophysical Characterization Of Nanofluids Through Molecular Dynamic Simulations, John Shelton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations, an analysis of the key thermophysical properties critical to heat transfer processes is performed. Replication of thermal conductivity and shear viscosity observations found in experimental investigations were performed using a theoretical nanopthesis-fluid system and a novel colloid-fluid interaction potential to investigate the key nanofluid parameters. Analysis of both the heat current (thermal conductivity) and stress (shear viscosity) autocorrelation functions have suggested that the dominant physical mechanisms for thermal and momentum transport arises from enhancements to the longitudinal and transverse acoustic modes energy transfer brought about by the increased mass ratio of the nanopthesis to the …

Modeling And Parameter Study Of Bistable Spherical Compliant Mechanisms, Chester Smith 2011 University of South Florida

Modeling And Parameter Study Of Bistable Spherical Compliant Mechanisms, Chester Smith

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The bistable spherical compliant mechanism (BSCM) is a novel device capable of large, repeatable, out-of-plane motion, characteristics that are somewhat difficult to achieve with surface micromachined microelectromechanical systems. An improved pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) to predict the behavior of the BSCM is presented. The new model was used to analyze seven different versions of the device, each with a different compliant joint length. The new model, which adds torsion, is compared with a finite element analysis (FEA) beam model. The new model more closely approximates the results yielded by FEA than previous models used to analyze the BSCM. Future work is …

In chapter 2, an easy instrument setup for macroscopic compression test is described. A series of PDMS samples with different base/agent ratios were tested using the macroscopic compression method. The relationship between PDMS elastic modulus and its base/agent ratio was established.

In chapter 3, PDMS nanoindentation DMA tests provide stable data with different test control models. The storage …

Phase Change Materials As A Thermal Storage Device For Passive Houses, Kevin Ryan Campbell 2011 Portland State University

Phase Change Materials As A Thermal Storage Device For Passive Houses, Kevin Ryan Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

This study describes a simulation-based approach for informing the incorporation of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in buildings designed to the "Passive House" standard. PCMs provide a minimally invasive method of adding thermal mass to a building, thus mitigating overheating events. Phase change transition temperature, quantity, and location of PCM were all considered while incrementally adding PCM to Passive House simulation models in multiple climate zones across the United States. Whole building energy simulations were performed using EnergyPlus from the US Department of Energy. A prototypical Passive House with a 1500 Watt electric heater and no mechanical cooling was modeled. The …

A Feasibility Study Of Model-Based Natural Ventilation Control In A Midrise Student Dormitory Building, Steven James Gross 2011 Portland State University

A Feasibility Study Of Model-Based Natural Ventilation Control In A Midrise Student Dormitory Building, Steven James Gross

Dissertations and Theses

Past research has shown that natural ventilation can be used to satisfy upwards of 98% of the yearly cooling demand when utilized in the appropriate climate zone. Yet widespread implementation of natural ventilation has been limited in practice. This delay in market adoption is mainly due to lack of effective and reliable control. Historically, control of natural ventilation was left to the occupant (i.e. they are responsible for opening and closing their windows) because occupants are more readily satisfied when given control of the indoor environment. This strategy has been shown to be effective during summer months, but can lead …

Fatigue Testing And Computational Analysis Of A Spinal Implant, Timothy Helton 2011 University of Denver

Fatigue Testing And Computational Analysis Of A Spinal Implant, Timothy Helton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The following study investigates the fatigue behavior of a spinal implant developed by Synthes, Inc. to provide stability and off load pressure from the discs in the lumbar region. The installation process for the StenoFix design utilizes plastic deformations to customize the device to each individual patient, but also has potential to degrade fatigue behavior. Physical testing of two titanium alloys, Ti-6Al-7Nb and Ti-15Mo, was conducted on hydraulic test frames and compared to computational simulations which were carried out for the following scenarios: cyclic excitation following plastic deformation; variation of material property definition; variation of loading location; and three modifications …

Initial Design, Manufacture, And Testing Of A Cubelab Module Frame For Biological Payloads Aboard The International Space Station, Twyman Samuel Clements

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis investigates the design of a CubeLab Module frame to facilitate biological research aboard the International Space Station (ISS). With the National Laboratory designation of the ISS by the United States Congress the barriers for use of the facility have been lowered for commercial and academic entities, allowing greater volume and diversity in the research that can be done. Researchers in biology and other areas could benefit from development and adoption of a plug-and-play payload containment system for use in the microgravity/space environment of the ISS. This research includes design and analysis of such a system. It also includes …

Constrained Volume Packing Of Deployable Wings For Unmanned Aircraft, Turner John Harris 2011 University of Kentucky

Constrained Volume Packing Of Deployable Wings For Unmanned Aircraft, Turner John Harris

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

UAVs are becoming an accepted tool for sensing. The benefits of deployable wings allow smaller transportation enclosures such as soldier back packs up to large rocket launched extraterrestrial UAVs. The packing of soft inflatable wings and Hybrid inflatable with rigid section wings is being studied at the University of Kentucky. Rigid wings are volume limited while inflatable wings are mass limited. The expected optimal wing design is a hybrid approach. Previous wing designs have been packed into different configurations in an attempt to determine the optimal stowed configurations. A comparison of rigid, hybrid, and inflatable wings will be presented. Also …

Perch Landing Maneuvers And Control For A Rotating-Wing Mav, Jonathan Louis Lubbers 2011 University of Kentucky

Perch Landing Maneuvers And Control For A Rotating-Wing Mav, Jonathan Louis Lubbers

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

This thesis addresses flight control of the perch landing maneuver for micro-aerial vehicles. A longitudinal flight model is constructed for a pigeon-sized aircraft. In addition to a standard elevator control surface, wing-rotation also considered as a non-standard actuator for increasing low-speed aerodynamic braking. Optimal state and control trajectories for the perch landing maneuver are computed using commercial software. A neighboring optimal control law is then developed and implemented in a set of flight simulations. Simulations are run with both a quasisteady and an unsteady aerodynamic model. The effectiveness of wing rotation and of the neighboring optimal control law is discussed, …

Dynamic Simulation Of A High Pressure Regulator, A. Shahani, H. Esmaili, Ashkan Aryaei, S. Mohammadi, M. Najar

Faculty Publications

In this paper, the dynamic simulation for a high pressure regulator is performed to obtain the regulator behavior. To analyze the regulator performance, the equation of motion for inner parts, the continuity equation for diverse chambers and the equation for mass flow rate were derived. Because of nonlinearity and coupling, these equations are solved using numerical methods and the results are presented. Additionally, the dynamic analysis results consist of the output pressure change versus time, the displacement of the moving parts versus time, the regulator mass flow rate versus time and the output pressure versus mass flow rate in different …

A Shock Tube Technique For Blast Wave Simulation And Studies Of Flow Structure Interactions In Shock Tube Blast Experiments, Nicholas N. Kleinschmit 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Shock Tube Technique For Blast Wave Simulation And Studies Of Flow Structure Interactions In Shock Tube Blast Experiments, Nicholas N. Kleinschmit

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Improvised explosive devices (IED’s) are widely used against US and allied forces fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Exposure to IED blast may cause blast-induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI). The injury mechanisms are however not well understood. A critical need in bTBI-related research is the ability to replicate the loading conditions of IED blast waves in a laboratory environment. In this work, experimental studies have been carried out to explore the use of the shock tube technique for generating air shock waves that mimic the temporal and spatial characteristics of free-field blast waves and to investigate the blast wave-test sample interactions …

V2o5-Wo3 Composite Films And Surface-Coated Licoo2 For Enhanced Li-Ion Intercalation Properties, Chuan Cai 2011 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

V2o5-Wo3 Composite Films And Surface-Coated Licoo2 For Enhanced Li-Ion Intercalation Properties, Chuan Cai

LSU Master's Theses

We have investigated the enhanced Li-ion intercalation properties of two different materials, which are V2O5-WO3 composite and surface-coated LiCoO2. A simple and novel solution processing method is employed to prepare V2O5-WO3 composite films that demonstrate enhanced Li-ion intercalation properties for applications in Li-ion batteries or electrochromic displays. This solution processing method employs precursors that only contain the elements of V, W, O and H, which avoids impurity elements such as Na that has been commonly used in other solution methods (e.g. using precursors of sodium metavanadate and sodium tungstate solution). The V2O5-WO3 composite films show enhanced Li-ion intercalation properties compared …

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Surface-Stress Effects In Metallic Nanostructures, Jijun Lao 2011 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Molecular Dynamics Simulation Studies Of Surface-Stress Effects In Metallic Nanostructures, Jijun Lao

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations we investigate the surface-stress-induced structural transformations and pseudoelastic behavior in palladium (Pd) crystalline nanowires. For a <100> initial crystal orientation our studies indicate that the surface stress can cause Pd nanowires to spontaneously undergo structural changes with characteristics that are determined by the wire cross-sectional area. Specifically, when the cross-sectional area is below 2.18nm x 2.18nm the wire changes spontaneously its crystal structure from the initial fcc structure to a body-centered-tetragonal (bct) structure. In wires of larger cross-sectional area (i.e., 2.57nm x 2.57nm) the structural transformation is achieved via a spontaneous lattice reorientation leading to an …

Fabrication And Property Study Of Plasma Sprayed Alumina Coatings And Magnetron Sputtered Multilayers, Ranran Liu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, air or atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), one of thermal spraying processes, was used to produce alumina coatings and single splats. Nanoindentation technique was used to measure the mechanical properties, such as hardness and elastic modulus, of APS alumina coatings and single splats. The detailed procedures to calculate elastic modulus and hardness, and testing parameters for nanoindentation have been provided. This study revealed that the phase combination of α-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3 played an important role in the scattering distribution of nanoindentation results on APS alumina coatings. In addition, nanoindentation technique was used to predict the phase information of …

For symmetrical SLE, option for imposing MPC equations is also provided.

Large-scale (up to 25 million unknowns involving complex numbers) structural and acoustic Finite Element (FE) analysis are used to evaluate the parallel computational performance of the proposed DD implementation using …

Thermal Response Of Lithium Tantalate For Temperature Measurement, Ardit Agastra 2011 University of South Florida

Thermal Response Of Lithium Tantalate For Temperature Measurement, Ardit Agastra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the study of the thermal response of the pyroelectric material named lithium tantalate or LT (LiTaO3) in aid of this material’s possible use for temperature measurement. The temperature range studied was between 5-99 oC. The sensor was excited using a silicon rubber heater. The lithium tantalate sensor and the rubber heater were enclosed such that the temperature would reach steady state faster. The enclosure was a small insulated box in order to reduce any extraneous effects on the sensor. The output signal of the lithium tantalate sensor was then amplified by using four different amplifying circuits and …

Regulation Of Cell Adhesion Strength By Spatial Organization Of Focal Adhesions, Kranthi Kumar Elineni 2011 University of South Florida

Regulation Of Cell Adhesion Strength By Spatial Organization Of Focal Adhesions, Kranthi Kumar Elineni

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Cell adhesion to extracellular matrix (ECM) is critical to various cellular processes like cell spreading, migration, growth and apoptosis. At the tissue level, cell adhesion is important in the pathological and physiological processes that regulate the tissue morphogenesis. Cell adhesion to the ECM is primarily mediated by the integrin family of receptors. The receptors that are recruited to the surface are reinforced by structural and signaling proteins at the adhesive sites forming focal adhesions that connect the cytoskeleton to further stabilize the adhesions. The functional roles of these focal adhesions extend beyond stabilizing adhesions and transduce mechanical signals at the …

Numerical Simulations Of Heat Transfer Processes In A Dehumidifying Wavy Fin And A Confined Liquid Jet Impingement On Various Surfaces, Mutasim Mohamed Sarour Elsheikh 2011 University of South Florida

Numerical Simulations Of Heat Transfer Processes In A Dehumidifying Wavy Fin And A Confined Liquid Jet Impingement On Various Surfaces, Mutasim Mohamed Sarour Elsheikh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of two different research problems. In the first one, the heat transfer characteristic of wavy fin assembly with dehumidification is carried out. In general, fin tube heat exchangers are employed in a wide variety of engineering applications, such as cooling coils for air conditioning, air pre-heaters in power plants and for heat dissipation from engine coolants in automobile radiators. In these heat exchangers, a heat transfer fluid such as water, oil, or refrigerant, flows through a parallel tube bank, while a second heat transfer fluid, such as air, is directed across the tubes. Since the principal resistance …

Interface Engineered Diamond Coatings For Dry Machining Applications, Humberto Arturo Gomez Vega 2011 University of South Florida

Interface Engineered Diamond Coatings For Dry Machining Applications, Humberto Arturo Gomez Vega

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Several studies have been propose to improve the adhesion of diamond films on cemented carbide tool materials, however a systematic study in identifying the role of the factors that affect the final diamond adhesion and the resulting machining performance of the tool under real manufacturing conditions is still unexplored. CVD diamond film's extraordinary qualities bring little benefit if the film fails to adhere sufficiently to the substrate. Inadequate adhesion undermines tool performance and longevity, causing unpredictable behavior under load and possibly leading to unexpected failure of the tool in the production line. This dissertation investigates the effects of different surface …
