Using Thermally Coupled Reactive Distillation Columns In Biodiesel Production, Nghi Nguyen, Yaşar Demirel 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Using Thermally Coupled Reactive Distillation Columns In Biodiesel Production, Nghi Nguyen, Yaşar Demirel

Yaşar Demirel Publications

Production of ethyl dodecanoate (biodiesel) using lauric acid and methanol with a solid acid catalyst of sulfated zirconia is studied by using two distillation sequences. In the first sequence, the methanol recovery column follows the reactive distillation column. In the second sequence, the reactive distillation and methanol recovery columns are thermally coupled. Thermally coupled distillation sequences may consume less energy by allowing interconnecting vapor and liquid streams between the two columns to elminate reboiler or condenser or both. Here we study the thermally coupled side-stripper reactive distillation and eliminate the condenser of the reactive distillation column. Both the sequences are …

Aim: Glucose stimulates insulin secretion from pancreatic islet β cells by altering ion channel activity and membrane potential in the β cells. TRPV1 channel is expressed in the β cells and capsaicin induces insulin secretion similarly to glucose. This study aims to investigate the biophysical properties of the β cells upon stimulation of membrane channels using an atomic force microscopic (AFM) nanoindentation system.

Methods: ATCC insulinoma cell line was used. Cell stiffness, a marker of reorganization of cell membrane and cytoskeleton due to ion channel activation, was measured in real time using an integrated AFM nanoindentation system. Cell height that …

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur S. Hurst, Sesha S. Srinivasan, James E. Maslar 2011 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Optical Cell For Combinatorial In Situ Raman Spectroscopic Measurements Of Hydrogen Storage Materials At High Pressures And Temperatures, Jason R. Hattrick-Simpers, Wilbur S. Hurst, Sesha S. Srinivasan, James E. Maslar

Faculty Publications

An optical cell is described for high-throughput backscattering Raman spectroscopic measurements of hydrogen storagematerials at pressures up to 10 MPa and temperatures up to 823 K. High throughput is obtained by employing a 60 mm diameter × 9 mm thick sapphire window, with a corresponding 50 mm diameter unobstructed optical aperture. To reproducibly seal this relatively large window to the cell body at elevated temperatures and pressures, a gold o-ring is employed. The sample holder-to-window distance is adjustable, making this cell design compatible with optical measurement systems incorporating lenses of significantly different focal lengths, e.g., microscope objectives and single element …

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler 2011 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Mechanical Characterization Of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane With Optical Methods, Xinyu Huang, Luis Alva, Jay Neutzler

Faculty Publications

Mechanical properties of polymer electrolyte membrane have important implications in the endurance of many electrochemical energy conversion devices [1]. Mechanical experiments are effective method to reveal discrete damage developed in the membrane by quantifying the change of mechanical strength and toughness. Regular strain measurement methods are overly intrusive to the thin and relatively fragile polymer electrolyte membrane; hence optical-based minimal invasive stress/strain measurement methods are studied.

Beading And Dimpling Techniques To Improve The Vibration And Acoustic Characteristics Of Plate Structures, Nabeel Taiseer Alshabtat 2011 Western Michigan University

Beading And Dimpling Techniques To Improve The Vibration And Acoustic Characteristics Of Plate Structures, Nabeel Taiseer Alshabtat

Dissertations

A method of improving the vibroacoustic characteristics of beams and plates is presented. This method is based on creating dimples or beads on the surface of the structures. The proposed method couples the finite element method with an optimization technique based on the genetic algorithm (GA). The improvement of the vibroacoustic characteristics of beams and plates is achieved by two separate strategies. The first strategy is optimizing the natural frequencies of beams and plates. The second strategy is minimizing the sound radiation from such vibrating structures. Optimizing the natural frequencies of some types of beams and simply supported plates by …

Adiabatic Air-Water Two Phase Flow Experimental Facilities Design, Construction And Operation, Saman Reshadi 2011 CUNY City College

Adiabatic Air-Water Two Phase Flow Experimental Facilities Design, Construction And Operation, Saman Reshadi

Dissertations and Theses

"Experimental studies are conducted to predict the phenomenon(s) and to describe some kind of causation. The design of experiment and the experimental facility is a rigorous method. A well designed, manufactured and operated experimental facility is robust under criticism. Thermal hydraulic characteristics of air-water two-phase flows in a vertical tube (poly-dispersed) and also annulus (mono-dispersed) have been subjected to be studied in detail. The hydrodynamics modeling and simulations need a detailed comparison and verification with experimental results. Obviously, a well-designed experimental facility is required to provide a set of highly accurate and reliable data. To do so, two different research …

Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson 2011 Brigham Young University - Provo

Self Assembly In Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities And Obstacles, Nathan B. Crane, J. Tuckerman, G. N. Nielson

Faculty Publications

Purpose

Additive manufacturing offers substantial flexibility in shape, but much less flexibility in materials and functionality—particularly at small size scales. A system for automatically incorporating microscale components would enable the fabrication of objects with more functionality. This paper considers the potential of self assembly to serve as an automated programmable integration method. In particular, it addresses the ability of random self assembly processes to successfully assemble objects with high performance despite the possibility of assembly errors.

Methodology

A self-assembled thermoelectric system is taken as a sample system. The performance expectations for these systems are then predicted using modified one-dimensional models …

Impact Of Self-Rewetting Aqueous Solutions On Boiling With Advanced Heat Transfer Applications, Mostafa Morovati 2011 CUNY City College

Impact Of Self-Rewetting Aqueous Solutions On Boiling With Advanced Heat Transfer Applications, Mostafa Morovati

Dissertations and Theses

"Pool boiling experiments have been conducted with self-rewetting fluids consisting of aqueous butanol and pentanol solution to study the boiling heat transfer enhancement at pressures of 1 ~ 4 bars. Although self-rewetting fluids have been used to enhance the performance of heat pipes, boiling heat transfer characteristics are yet to be fully understood especially at pressures above atmospheric. Pool boiling experiments with aqueous butanol and pentanol solutions were performed using an electrically heated platinum wire to obtain pool boiling heat transfer data up to the Critical Heat Flux (CHF). Aqueous solutions with butanol concentrations 2-7% showed enhanced heat transfer coefficients …

Diffuse-Charge Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Electrochemical Systems, Hui Zhao 2011 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Diffuse-Charge Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Electrochemical Systems, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

We employ a continuum theory of solvent-free ionic liquids accounting for both short-range electrostatic correlations and steric effects (finite ion size) [Bazant et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 046102 (2011)] to study the response of a model microelectrochemical cell to a step voltage. The model problem consists of a 1-1 symmetric ionic liquid between two parallel blocking electrodes, neglecting any transverse transport phenomena. Matched asymptotic expansions in the limit of thin double layers are applied to analyze the resulting one-dimensional equations and study the overall charge-time relation in the weakly nonlinear regime. One important conclusion is that our …

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao 2011 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A continuum model is developed to predict the dielectrophoretic polarizability of coiled DNA molecules under the action of an alternating current electric field. The model approximates the coiled DNA molecule as a charged porous spherical particle. The model explains the discrepancies among scaling laws of polarizability of different-sized DNA molecules with contour length and such discrepancies are attributed to different hydrodynamic behavior. With zero or one fitting parameter, theoretical predictions are in good agreement with various experimental data, even though in experiments there are some uncertainties in regard to certain parameters.

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao 2011 University of Nevada, Las Vegas

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The streaming potential generated by a pressure-driven flow over a weakly charged slip-stick surface [the zeta potential of the surface is smaller than the thermal potential (25 mV)] with an arbitrary double layer thickness is theoretically studied by solving the Debye–Huckel equation and Stokes equation. A series solution of the streaming potential is derived. Approximate expressions for the streaming potential in the limits of thin double layers and thick double layers are also given in excellent agreement with the full solution. To understand the impact of the slip, the streaming potential is compared against that over a homogeneously charged smooth …

A Large-Stroke Electrostatic Micro-Actuator, Shahrzad Towfighian, Abdulrahman Seleim, Eihab Abdel-Rahman, Glenn Heppler 2011 Binghamton University--SUNY

A Large-Stroke Electrostatic Micro-Actuator, Shahrzad Towfighian, Abdulrahman Seleim, Eihab Abdel-Rahman, Glenn Heppler

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship

Voltage-driven parallel-plate electrostatic actuators suffer from an operation range limit of 30% of the electrostatic gap; this has restrained their application in microelectromechanical systems. In this paper, the travel range of an electrostatic actuator made of a micro-cantilever beam above a fixed electrode is extended quasi-statically to 90% of the capacitor gap by introducing a voltage regulator (controller) circuit designed for low-frequency actuation. The voltage regulator reduces the actuator input voltage, and therefore the electrostatic force, as the beam approaches the fixed electrode so that balance is maintained between the mechanical restoring force and the electrostatic force. The low-frequency actuator …

Development Of A Technique For Achieving An Optimum Bsfc For Laf Engine, Shreyash S. Ukidave

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The reserves of gasoline and diesel fuels are ever decreasing, which plays an important role in the technological development of automobiles. Numerous countries, especially the United States, wish to slowly decrease their fuel dependence on other countries by producing in house renewable fuels like biodiesels or ethanol. Therefore, the new automobile engines have to successfully run on a variety of fuels without significant changes to their designs. The current study focuses on assessing the potential of ethanol fuels to improve the performance of 'flex-fuel SI engines,' which literally means 'engines that are flexible in their fuel requirement.'

Another important area …

Stochastic Knock Detection Model For Spark Ignited Engines, Yashodeep Lonari 2011 Michigan Technological University

Stochastic Knock Detection Model For Spark Ignited Engines, Yashodeep Lonari

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

This report presents the development of a Stochastic Knock Detection (SKD) method for combustion knock detection in a spark-ignition engine using a model based design approach. Knock Signal Simulator (KSS) was developed as the plant model for the engine. The KSS as the plant model for the engine generates cycle-to-cycle accelerometer knock intensities following a stochastic approach with intensities that are generated using a Monte Carlo method from a lognormal distribution whose parameters have been predetermined from engine tests and dependent upon spark-timing, engine speed and load. The lognormal distribution has been shown to be a good approximation to the …

Synthesis Of Computations And Experiments For Obtaining Pulsatile Gas Flow Rates From Dynamic Pressure Difference Measurements Across An Orifice-Plate Meter, Nikhil Ajotikar 2011 Michigan Technological University

Synthesis Of Computations And Experiments For Obtaining Pulsatile Gas Flow Rates From Dynamic Pressure Difference Measurements Across An Orifice-Plate Meter, Nikhil Ajotikar

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The use of conventional orifice-plate meter is typically restricted to measurements of steady flows. This study proposes a new and effective computational-experimental approach for measuring the time-varying (but steady-in-the-mean) nature of turbulent pulsatile gas flows. Low Mach number (effectively constant density) steady-in-the-mean gas flows with large amplitude fluctuations (whose highest significant frequency is characterized by the value fF) are termed pulsatile if the fluctuations have a direct correlation with the time-varying signature of the imposed dynamic pressure difference and, furthermore, they have fluctuation amplitudes that are significantly larger than those associated with turbulence or random acoustic wave signatures. …
