Dynamic Modeling And Optimal Design For Net Zero Energy Houses Including Hybrid Electric And Thermal Energy Storage, Huangjie Gong, Vandana Rallabandi, Dan M. Ionel, Donald G. Colliver, Shaun Duerr, Cristinel Ababei

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

Net zero energy (NZE) houses purchase zero net metered electricity from the grid over a year. Technical challenges brought forth by NZE homes are related to the intermittent nature of solar generation, and are due to the fact that peak solar generation and load are not coincident. This leads to a large rate of change of load, and in case of high PV penetration communities, often requires the installation of gas power plants to service this variability. This paper proposes a hybrid energy storage system including batteries and a variable power electric water heater which enables the NZE homes to …

Machine Learning Applications In Power Systems, Xinan Wang 2020 Southern Methodist University

Machine Learning Applications In Power Systems, Xinan Wang

Electrical Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Machine learning (ML) applications have seen tremendous adoption in power system research and applications. For instance, supervised/unsupervised learning-based load forecasting and fault detection are classic ML topics that have been well studied. Recently, reinforcement learning-based voltage control, distribution analysis, etc., are also gaining popularity. Compared to conventional mathematical methods, ML methods have the following advantages: (i). better robustness against different system configurations due to its data-driven nature; (ii). better adaption to system uncertainties; (iii). less dependent on the modeling accuracy and validity of assumptions. However, due to the unique physics of the power grid, many problems cannot be directly solved …

Conducted Emi Mitigation In Power Converters Using Active Emi Filters, Balaji Narayanasamy

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Wide bandgap devices enable high power density power converters. Despite the advantages of increased switching frequency, the passive components are still a major bottleneck towards enabling high power density. Among the passive components in the converter, the passive EMI filters are unavoidable to ensure compliance with conducted EMI standards. Active EMI filters help reduce the volume of the passive components and have been around for three decades now. Firstly, this work presents a summary of all the different active EMI filters based on the type of noise-sensing, noise-processing, the type of active circuits used and the type of control methods. …

Towards High Efficiency And High Power Density Converter: System Level Design, Modulation, And Active Emi Filters, Hongwu Peng 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Towards High Efficiency And High Power Density Converter: System Level Design, Modulation, And Active Emi Filters, Hongwu Peng

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Power converter exposes strong challenges to its efficiency, power density and reliability. For the grid-connected inverter application, three-level (3-L) T-type neutral-point-clamped (TNPC) inverters has higher efficiency and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) compared to two-level inverter. Hybrid switch concept combines the benefit of both silicon carbide (SiC) MOSFET and Si IGBT. By applying hybrid switch structure in 3-L T-type inverter, the total power density of 3-L TNPC inverter will be higher while the cost will be lower than that of all-SiC 3-L T-type inverter. The hybrid switch based 3-L TNPC inverter also imposes challenge to its modulation and control, a …

Optimal Network Reconfiguration And Distributed Generation Sizing With Consideration Of Protection System, Abdul Rahim Mohamad Norshahrani 2020 Universiti Malaya

Optimal Network Reconfiguration And Distributed Generation Sizing With Consideration Of Protection System, Abdul Rahim Mohamad Norshahrani

Student Works (2020-2029)

Research on network reconfiguration (NR) considering distributed generation (DG) commonly focus on the issues of power loss, voltage deviation, DG sizing and its placement. These works are important and required in the planning stage of the distribution networks. In most of the past works, the protection system is neglected in this stage although it is essential to prevent the network from damages during operation. Without proper consideration of protection system settings and coordination during NR, the protection system may operate inaccurately. This happens due to changes in current flow and fault level when the network changes its configuration. As a …

Modeling And Control Of Solar Pv With Battery Energy Storage For Rural Electrification, Irene Masenge

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

In rural areas where electric power grid network is rarely available, power generation from renewable energy resource such as solar photovoltaic (PV) is mostly accomplished in standalone mode. The standalone solar PV system requires energy storage device to achieve reliable power supply to the end users. This paper presents modelling and coordination control of solar PV with battery energy storage system (BESS) for rural-electrification applications. The proposed control is accomplished via a bidirectional buck-boost converter with the objective of maintaining voltage at the DC bus constant. Simulation results based-on MATLAB/Simulink platform confirms good performance of the proposed system

Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Based Polymer Electrolytes For All-Solid-State Li-S Batteries, Xue Li, Zheng-Liang Gong

Journal of Electrochemistry

In recent years, research on lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries has received much attention because the sulfur positive electrode and the lithium metal negative electrode produce a high theoretical specific capacity (lithium metal ~ 3800 mAh·g-1, sulfur ~ 1675 mAh·g-1). In addition, sulfur is considered to be the most promising cathode material for secondary lithium batteries, due to its advantages of low price and environmental friendly. However, the practical application of conventional liquid Li-S batteries is still obstructed by several critical issues, such as lithium ploysulfides shuttle effect, long-term stability of lithium metal anode with organic liquid electrolytes, …

The increase in popularity of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been driven by their use in civilian, education, government, and military applications. However, limited on-board energy storage significantly limits flight time and ultimately usability. The propulsion system plays a critical part in the overall energy consumption of the UAV; therefore, it is necessary to determine the most optimal combination of possible propulsion system components for a given mission profile, i.e. propellers, motors, and electronic speed controllers (ESC). Hundreds of options are available for the different components with little performance specifications available for most of them. By examining a variety of …

Optimization Of Aggregated Ev Power In Residential Communities With Smart Homes, Huangjie Gong, Dan M. Ionel

Power and Energy Institute of Kentucky Faculty Publications

Electric vehicles (EVs) tend to increase peak power for residences in the evening when house owners return home and begin charging. The aggregated EV charging demand can cause a sudden rise in the peak power at the distribution system level, resulting in a “dragon curve” Such phenomenon, combined with the “duck curve” that is caused by high photovoltaic (PV) penetration in residential communities, requires fast ramping rates and expanded capabilities for local distribution transformers and main feeder cables provided by the utility. As a solution, a residential energy storage system (RESS) can store surplus PV generation during midday and use …
