Avoiding Sanctions At The E-Discovery Meet-And-Confer In Common Law Countries, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma 2010 Metropolitan State University

Avoiding Sanctions At The E-Discovery Meet-And-Confer In Common Law Countries, Milton Luoma, Vicki Luoma

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The rules of civil procedure in common law countries have been amended to better deal with the requirements of electronic discovery. One of the key changes in case management is the scheduling of a meet-and-confer session where the parties to litigation must meet early in the case before any discovery procedures have begun to exchange information regarding the nature, location, formats, and pertinent facts regarding custody and control of a party’s electronically stored information (ESI). Failure to abide by the rules and participate in good faith at the meet-and-confer session can have dire consequences for the parties and lawyers involved. …

Malware Forensics: Discovery Of The Intent Of Deception, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward 2010 Edith Cowan University

Malware Forensics: Discovery Of The Intent Of Deception, Murray Brand, Craig Valli, Andrew Woodward

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Malicious software (malware) has a wide variety of analysis avoidance techniques that it can employ to hinder forensic analysis. Although legitimate software can incorporate the same analysis avoidance techniques to provide a measure of protection against reverse engineering and to protect intellectual property, malware invariably makes much greater use of such techniques to make detailed analysis labour intensive and very time consuming. Analysis avoidance techniques are so heavily used by malware that the detection of the use of analysis avoidance techniques could be a very good indicator of the presence of malicious intent. However, there is a tendency for analysis …

Digital Records Forensics: A New Science And Academic Program For Forensic Readiness, Luciana Duranti, Barbara Endicott-Popovsky

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

This paper introduces the Digital Records Forensics project, a research endeavour located at the University of British Columbia in Canada and aimed at the development of a new science resulting from the integration of digital forensics with diplomatics, archival science, information science and the law of evidence, and of an interdisciplinary graduate degree program, called Digital Records Forensics Studies, directed to professionals working for law enforcement agencies, legal firms, courts, and all kind of institutions and business that require their services. The program anticipates the need for organizations to become “forensically ready,” defined by John Tan as “maximizing the ability …

Solid State Drives: The Beginning Of The End For Current Practice In Digital Forensic Recovery?, Graeme B. Bell, Richard Boddington 2010 Murdoch University, Perth

Solid State Drives: The Beginning Of The End For Current Practice In Digital Forensic Recovery?, Graeme B. Bell, Richard Boddington

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Digital evidence is increasingly relied upon in computer forensic examinations and legal proceedings in the modern courtroom. The primary storage technology used for digital information has remained constant over the last two decades, in the form of the magnetic disc. Consequently, investigative, forensic, and judicial procedures are well-established for magnetic disc storage devices (Carrier, 2005). However, a paradigm shift has taken place in technology storage and complex, transistor-based devices for primary storage are now increasingly common. Most people are aware of the transition from portable magnetic floppy discs to portable USB transistor flash devices, yet the transition from magnetic hard …

Book Review: Digital Forensic Evidence Examination (2nd Ed.), Gary C. Kessler 2010 Gary Kessler Associates

Book Review: Digital Forensic Evidence Examination (2nd Ed.), Gary C. Kessler

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

On the day that I sat down to start to write this review, the following e-mail came across on one of my lists: Person A and Person B write back and forth and create an email thread. Person A then forwards the email to Person C, but changes some wording in the email exchange between A & B. What is the easiest way (and is it even possible) to find out when that earlier email message was altered before sent to Person C? Before you try to answer these questions, read Fred Cohen's Digital Forensic Evidence Examination. His book won't …

Identifying A Computer Forensics Expert: A Study To Measure The Characteristics Of Forensic Computer Examiners, Gregory H. Carlton, Reginald Worthley 2010 California State Polytechnic University

Identifying A Computer Forensics Expert: A Study To Measure The Characteristics Of Forensic Computer Examiners, Gregory H. Carlton, Reginald Worthley

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

The usage of digital evidence from electronic devices has been rapidly expanding within litigation, and along with this increased usage, the reliance upon forensic computer examiners to acquire, analyze, and report upon this evidence is also rapidly growing. This growing demand for forensic computer examiners raises questions concerning the selection of individuals qualified to perform this work. While courts have mechanisms for qualifying witnesses that provide testimony based on scientific data, such as digital data, the qualifying criteria covers a wide variety of characteristics including, education, experience, training, professional certifications, or other special skills. In this study, we compare task …

An Adaptive Control Strategy For Dstatcom Applications In An Electric Ship Power System, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is a shunt compensation device that is generally used to solve power quality problems in distribution systems. In an all-electric ship power system, power quality issues arise due to high-energy demand loads such as pulse loads. This paper presents the application of a DSTATCOM to improve the power quality in a ship power system during and after pulse loads. The control strategy of the DSTATCOM plays an important role in maintaining the voltage at the point of common coupling. A novel adaptive control strategy for the DSTATCOM based on artificial immune system (AIS) is presented in …

Experimental Investigation Of Magnetic Circular Dichroism Spectrum And Stress Induced Optical Activity In A Single-Defect Photonic Crystal, Mikhail Vasiliev, Kamal Alameh, Vladimir I. Burkov, V. V. Koledov, Viacheslav A. Kotov, V. G. Shavrov, Anotoly K. Zvezdin

Research outputs pre 2011

Experimental investigation results for the magnetic circular dichroism spectrum (MCD) of a photonic crystal (PC) are presented. We found that in the vicinity of the transmission peak within the photonic bandgap and also near the bandgap edges, the circular dichroism is measurable even in the absence of any applied magnetic field. The application of magnetic field leads to generating an additional MCD signal measurable at the wavelengths near the “defect mode” transmittance line.

Protection Of Upqc Against The Load Side Short Circuits, Iurie Axente, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Kevin Gaughan 2010 Technological University Dublin

Protection Of Upqc Against The Load Side Short Circuits, Iurie Axente, Malabika Basu, Michael Conlon, Kevin Gaughan

Articles

This study presents a protection scheme for protecting the series inverter of a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The proposed scheme protects the series inverter from overcurrents and overvoltages, which appear during short-circuit faults on the load side of the UPQC. The main protection element is a crowbar connected across the secondary of the series transformer and consists of a pair of antiparallel connected thyristors, which is governed by a simple Zener diode-based control circuit. In the case of an overvoltage, the crowbar short circuits the secondary of the transformer, thus removing the overvoltage and diverting the fault current from …

Electric Field Induced Biaxiality And The Electro-Optic Effect In A Bent-Core Nematic Liquid Crystal, Mamatha Nagaraj, Yuri Panarin, U. Manna, J. K. Vij, C. Keith, C. Tschierske 2010 Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Electric Field Induced Biaxiality And The Electro-Optic Effect In A Bent-Core Nematic Liquid Crystal, Mamatha Nagaraj, Yuri Panarin, U. Manna, J. K. Vij, C. Keith, C. Tschierske

Articles

We report the observation of a biaxial nematic phase in a bent-core molecular system using polarizing microscopy, electro-optics, and dielectric spectroscopy, where we find that the biaxiality exists on a microscopic scale. An application of electric field induces a macroscopic biaxiality and in consequence gives rise to electro-optic switching. This electro-optic effect shows significant potential in applications for displays due to its fast high-contrast response. The observed electro-optic switching is explained in terms of the interaction of the ferroelectric clusters with the electric field. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

Liquid Crystal Display Modes In A Nontilted Bent-Core Biaxial Smectic Liquid Crystal, Mamatha Nagaraj, Yuri Panarin, J. K. Vij, C. Keith, C. Tschierske 2010 Trinity College Dublin, Ireland

Liquid Crystal Display Modes In A Nontilted Bent-Core Biaxial Smectic Liquid Crystal, Mamatha Nagaraj, Yuri Panarin, J. K. Vij, C. Keith, C. Tschierske

Articles

Liquid crystal display (LCD) modes associated with the rotation of the secondary director in nontilted, biaxial smectic phase of an achiral bent-core compound are demonstrated. For LCDs, we find that at least four display modes are possible using SmAPA phase of the studied material, in which the minor directors in adjacent layers are aligned antiferroelectrically. The advantages of these modes include low driving field (1–2 V/ µm), high contrast ratio 1000:1, relatively fast switching time of 0.5 ms and continuous gray scale. The molecular short axis or the polar axis in a negative dielectric, biaxial material is oriented by the …

Advanced Dynamic Response Improvement Methods For Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Lisheng Shi 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Advanced Dynamic Response Improvement Methods For Dc-Dc Power Electronic Converters, Lisheng Shi

Doctoral Dissertations

"Dc-dc power electronic converters supplying electric power to digital processors, data centers, and telecommunication systems are required to exhibit a fast dynamic response in response to their instantaneous electric load variations. This requirement is becoming more and more stringent as the operating voltage of such loads is continuously reducing. This voltage level reduction has reached a point where conventional control approaches can barely meet the dynamic response demanded by such loads. In order to overcome this issue, several approaches focusing on the dynamic response improvement for dc-dc converters have been proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, most of them have at …

Dynamic Reconfiguration And Control Of Smart Power Systems, Pinaki Mitra 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Dynamic Reconfiguration And Control Of Smart Power Systems, Pinaki Mitra

Doctoral Dissertations

"To address the increasing demand and complexity, modern power systems need intelligence at almost all levels which can transform them into 'smart' power systems. The term 'smart power systems' not only refers to the terrestrial power systems with a significant penetration of distributed energy resources and energy storage such as plug-in electric vehicle parking lots (SmartParks), but also includes other isolated power systems, such as the power systems of naval electric ships. The research presented in this dissertation contributes to the dynamic reconfiguration and control of both terrestrial and ship power system with the application of computational intelligence methods.

Excitation-Induced Germanium Quantum Dot Formation On Si (100)-(2×1), Ali Oguz Er, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Physics Faculty Publications

The effect of nanosecond pulsed laser excitation on the self-assembly of Ge quantum dots grown by pulsed laser deposition on Si (100)-(2×1) was studied. In situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction and ex situ atomic force microscopy were used to probe the quantum dot structure and morphology. At room temperature, applying the excitation laser decreased the surface roughness of the grown Ge film. With surface electronic excitation, crystalline Ge quantum dots were formed at 250 °C, a temperature too low for their formation without excitation. At a substrate temperature of 390 °C, electronic excitation during growth was found to improve the …

The Weakening Of Branch Predictor Performance As An Inevitable Side Effect Of Exploiting Control Independence, Christopher Joseph Michael 2010 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

The Weakening Of Branch Predictor Performance As An Inevitable Side Effect Of Exploiting Control Independence, Christopher Joseph Michael

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many algorithms are inherently sequential and hard to explicitly parallelize. Cores designed to aggressively handle these problems exhibit deeper pipelines and wider fetch widths to exploit instruction-level parallelism via out-of-order execution. As these parameters increase, so does the amount of instructions fetched along an incorrect path when a branch is mispredicted. Many of the instructions squashed after a branch are control independent, meaning they will be fetched regardless of whether the candidate branch is taken or not. There has been much research in retaining these control independent instructions on misprediction of the candidate branch. This research shows that there is …

Carbon Nanotube Interconnect Modeling For Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits, Yao Xu 2010 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Carbon Nanotube Interconnect Modeling For Very Large Scale Integrated Circuits, Yao Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this research, we have studied and analyzed the physical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes. Based on the reported models for current transport behavior in non-ballistic CNT-FETs, we have built a dynamic model for non-ballistic CNT-FETs. We have also extended the surface potential model of a non-ballistic CNT-FET to a ballistic CNT-FET and developed a current transport model for ballistic CNT-FETs. We have studied the current transport in metallic carbon nanotubes. By considering the electron-electron interactions, we have modified two-dimensional fluid model for electron transport to build a semi-classical one-dimensional fluid model to describe the electron transport in carbon …

For the early detection of prostate cancer, the analysis of the Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in serum is currently the most popular approach. However, previous studies show that 15% of men have prostate cancer even their PSA concentrations are low. MALDI Mass Spectrometry (MS) proves to be a better technology to discover molecular tools for early cancer detection. The molecular tools or peptides are termed as biomarkers. Using MALDI MS data from prostate tissue samples, prostate cancer biomarkers can be identified by searching for molecular or molecular combination that can differentiate cancer tissue regions from normal ones. Cancer tissue regions are …

Wireless Sensor Network Radio Power Management And Simulation Models, Michael I. Brownfield, Theresa Nelson, Scott Midkiff, Nathaniel J. Davis Iv

Faculty Publications

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) create a new frontier in collecting and processing data from remote locations. The IEEE 802.15.4 wireless personal area network-low rate (WPAN-LR) WSNs rely on hardware simplicity to make sensor field deployments both affordable and long-lasting without maintenance support. WSN designers strive to extend network lifetimes while meeting application-specific throughput and latency requirements. Effective power management places sensor nodes (or motes) into one of the available energy-saving modes based upon the sleep period duration and the current state of the radio. The newest generation of WPAN-LR-based sensor platform radios operates at a 250 kbps data rate and …
