The increase of fuel price has caused fleet operational and shipping business to be in danger situation. The fuel consumption of a ship is influenced by ship volume or wetted area which contributes directly to the increase of ship resistance and the size of main engine. In order to find out the appropriate answers, a series of investigation into river transportation using monohull, catamaran and trimaran types of vessel was carried out. The work focused on the estimation of total resistance and powering as well as seakeeping characteristics and carried out experimentally using tank test and numerically using a ship …

Determining the Standard Value of the Oily Distortion of Acquisition the Fingerprint Images. This research describes a novel procedure for determining the standard value of the oily distortion of acquisition the fingerprint images based on the score of clarity and ridge-valley thickness ratio. The fingerprint image is quantized into blocks size 32 x 32 pixels. Inside each block, an orientation line, which perpendicular to the ridge direction, is computed. The center of the block along the ridge direction, a two-dimension (2-D) vector V1 (slanted square) with the pixel size 32 x 13 pixels can be extracted and transformed to a …

This paper describes a research toward the accuracy of floating-point values, and effort to reveal the real accuracy. The methods used in this research paper are assignment of values, assignment of value of arithmetic expressions, and output the values using floating-point value format that helps reveal the accuracy. The programming-tool used are Visual C# 9, Visual C++ 9, Java 5, and Visual BASIC 9. These tools run on top of Intel 80 x 86 hardware. A great number of experimental researches on the prevention of the CaCO3 precipitation process by magnetic field have been carried out. In this research, Na2CO3 and CaCl2 solutions was magnetized in the circulated flow condition (dynamic fluid system). The velocity of fluid and the circulation time was modified to examine its influences to the magnetization process. CaCO3 content was measured by titration method of EDTA complexometry. Conductivity test was conducted to find out hydrate ion bonding. The results showed …

Makara Journal of Technology
Two class pattern classification problems appeared in many applications. In some applications, the characteristic of the members in a class is dissimilar. This paper proposed a classification system for this problem. The proposed system was developed based on the combination of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA) and support vector machines (SVMs). This system has been implemented in a two class face recognition problem. The average of the classification rate in this face image classification is 82.5%.

Chemical Potential Perturbation: A Method To Predict Chemical Potentials In Periodic Molecular Simulations, Stan G. Moore, Dean R. Wheeler
Faculty Publications
A new method, called chemical potential perturbation (CPP), has been developed to predict the chemical potential as a function of density in periodic molecular simulations. The CPP method applies a spatially varying external force field to the simulation, causing the density to depend upon position in the simulation cell. Following equilibration the homogeneous (uniform or bulk) chemical potential as a function of density can be determined relative to some reference state after correcting for the effects of the inhomogeneity of the system. We compare three different methods of approximating this correction. The first method uses the van der Waals density …

Pyrolysis Kinetics And Chemical Structure Considerations Of A Green River Oil Shale And Its Derivatives, James L. Hillier
Theses and Dissertations
This work had the objective of determining both the kinetic parameters for the pyrolysis of oil shale and kerogen as well as using analytical techniques coupled with pyrolysis to shed light on the structure of a specific Green River oil shale. Because of the problems with linearized methods and disagreement among literature values and methods, a new method was developed tofit kinetic parameters to non linearized data. The method was demonstrated to determine the "correct" answer for mathematically generated data within a few percent error and was shown to have a lower sum squared error than the linearized methods. The …

Sawdust Pyrolysis And Petroleum Coke Co2 Gasification At High Heating Rates, Aaron D. Lewis
Theses and Dissertations
Clean and efficient electricity can be generated using an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC). Although IGCC is typically used with coal, it can also be used to gasify other carbonaceous species like biomass and petroleum coke. It is important to understand the pyrolysis and gasification of these species in order to design commercial gasifiers and also to determine optimal conditions for operation. High heating-rate (100,000 K/s) pyrolysis experiments were performed with biomass (sawdust) in BYU's atmospheric flat-flame burner reactor at conditions ranging from 1163 to 1433 K with particle residence times ranging from 23 to 102 ms. Volatile yields and …

Effects Of Damköhler Number On Flame Extinction And Reignition In Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames Using Dns, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Hans A. Schmutz
Faculty Publications
Results from a parametric study of flame extinction and reignition with varying Damköhler number using direct numerical simulation are presented. Three planar, non-premixed ethylene jet flames were simulated at a constant Reynolds number of 5120. The fuel and oxidizer stream compositions were varied to adjust the steady laminar extinction scalar dissipation rate, while maintaining constant flow and geometric conditions. Peak flame extinction varies from approximately 40% to nearly global blowout as the Damköhler number decreases. The degree of extinction significantly affects the development of the jets and the degree of mixing of fuel, oxidizer, and combustion products prior to reignition. …

Genomic Library Screens For Genes Involved In N-Butanol Tolerance In Escherichia Coli, Luis Reyes, Maria Almario, Katy Kao

Backgroundn-Butanol is a promising emerging biofuel, and recent metabolic engineering efforts have demonstrated the use of several microbial hosts for its production. However, most organisms have very low tolerance to n-butanol (up to 2% (v/v)), limiting the economic viability of this biofuel. The rational engineering of more robust n-butanol production hosts relies upon understanding the mechanisms involved in tolerance. However, the existing knowledge of genes involved in n-butanol tolerance is limited. The goal of this study is therefore to identify E. coli genes that are involved in n-butanol tolerance.Methodology/Principal FindingsUsing a genomic library enrichment strategy, we identified approximately 270 genes …
