Engineering Nanoparticle And Nanoring Patterns For The Study Of Molecular Crystallization Under Nanoconfinement, Sunxi Wang 2013 Wayne State University

Engineering Nanoparticle And Nanoring Patterns For The Study Of Molecular Crystallization Under Nanoconfinement, Sunxi Wang

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on generating the inorganic nanoparticle/organic nanorod hybrid nanostructures by the strategy of nanoparticle induced molecular crystallization developed by us and the new electrochemical method. We synthesize the gold nanoparticles with different sizes and functional groups and then fabricate the nanohybrids with fatty acid nanorods by spin coating method. Atomic force microscope monitors the topography of the hybrid nanostructures to help understand the underlying mechanism of the crystallization process. This successful self-assembled method could be used to fabricate nanohybrids based on seed-mediated nucleation. Also the novel "nano-flasks" have been generated by particle lithography method, which could be served …

Adiabatic Flame Temperature For Combustion Of Methane Ii, Rebeca Pupo 2013 University of South Florida

Adiabatic Flame Temperature For Combustion Of Methane Ii, Rebeca Pupo

Undergraduate Journal of Mathematical Modeling: One + Two

We calculate the adiabatic flame temperature of a mixture of methane and oxygen in the presence of a diluent gas then determine the mole fractions of methane without respect to nitrogen and solve for the moles of oxygen present. Knowing the moles of methane and oxygen, allows us to calculate the moles of nitrogen present at four constant mole fractions of nitrogen, and the adiabatic flame temperature is determined from the energy released by the reaction. Lastly, we produce several graphs to compare the adiabatic flame temperatures at different mole fractions of nitrogen.

Microfluidic Devices Applied On Enriching Post –Translational Modified Proteins For Proteomics, Hui Xia

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work, microfluidic devices were developed for enriching post-translational modified proteins. Post-translational modifications (PTM) of proteins play essential roles in cellular physiology and disease. The identification of protein substrates and detection of modification site helps understand PTM-mediated regulation in essential biological pathways and functions in various diseases. However, PTM proteins are typically present only at trace levels, making them difficult to identify in mass spectrometry based proteomics. This work study is about the design, fabrication and testing of the microfluidic device for the enrichment of abundant amount of PTMs. Carbonylated protein is used as a representative PTM to illustrate …

Modeling Of Biorefinery Supply Chain Economic Performance With Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph S. Amundson 2013 University of Kentucky

Modeling Of Biorefinery Supply Chain Economic Performance With Discrete Event Simulation, Joseph S. Amundson

Theses and Dissertations--Manufacturing Systems Engineering

As competition for fossil fuels accelerates, alternative sources of chemicals, fuels, and energy production become more appealing to researchers and the layman. Among the candidates to fill this growing niche is lignocellulosic biomass. Many researchers have examined supply chain design and optimization for biofuel and bioenergy production throughout the years. However, these models often fail to capture the variability and uncertainty inherent to the biomass supply chain. Multiple factors with high degrees of stochasticity can have major impacts on the performance of a biorefinery: weather, biomass quality, feedstock availability, and market demand for products are just a few. To begin …

Properties Of Peg, Ppg And Their Copolymers Influence On The Gap-Fill Characteristics Of Damascene Interconnects, Kevin Ryan

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

A laboratory scale plating cell was built that provided reproducible bottom-up fill results for the electrochemical deposition of copper in damascene features. Several techniques used in the full wafer plating tool were incorporated into the setup to accurately control the process conditions. These techniques included but were not limited to a voltage controlled `hot-entry' step, a custom coupon holder to allow sample rotation, a secondary thief electrode and an automatic entry system. The results of qualification experiments are presented to demonstrate that precise control was realized along with repeatable partial fill plating results. The qualified setup was then used to …

Enantioselective Hydrogenation Of Α-Methylcinnamic Acid Over Pd/Al2o3: A Spectroscopic And Kinetic Study, Xiaojing Sun 2013 University of South Carolina

Enantioselective Hydrogenation Of Α-Methylcinnamic Acid Over Pd/Al2o3: A Spectroscopic And Kinetic Study, Xiaojing Sun

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrogenation of C=C in α-methylcinnamic acid (MCA) is studied by both kinetic and spectroscopic method. Kinetic study was in a semi-batch reactor. The reaction activity is strongly solvent dependent, while selectivity remains almost unaffected. The reaction is zero order in hydrogen pressure and first order in MCA. The presence of cinchonidine does not affect the reaction order with respect to either acid or H2 pressure, but has a significant inhibiting effect on the reaction rate. The catalyst exhibits stable activity during the reaction with no sign of deactivation. The adsorption and hydrogenation in dichloromethane, isopropanol and 1, 4-Dioxane over the …

Comparison Of Square Root Of Time Approach And Statistical Approach To Minimize Subjectivity In The Determination Of Minimum In-Situ Stress, Soumitra Bhaskar Nande 2013 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Comparison Of Square Root Of Time Approach And Statistical Approach To Minimize Subjectivity In The Determination Of Minimum In-Situ Stress, Soumitra Bhaskar Nande

Masters Theses

"A formation's minimum in-situ stress is an important parameter to determine for hydraulic fracturing. While minimum in-situ stress, and its orientation, can be measured from triaxial tests on core, it is more common to measure it as closure stress, by performing pressure testing of wells in the field. Closure stress is considered equal to, or a good approximation of the minimum in-situ stress for most cases. The analytical methods applied to such pressure testing include the square root of time plot, G function plot and the G-dP/dG plot. These plots require the engineer to fit tangent lines to the data, …

Computational Fluid Dynamics Flow Comparison Between Openhole Sleeve And Plug-And-Perf Completion In A Hydraulic Fractured Horizontal Well, Viriyah Theppornprapakorn

Masters Theses

"Multi-stage hydraulic fracture completions in horizontal wells have facilitated economic development of natural gas from unconventional and tight gas reservoirs.Industry has relied on two horizontal multi-stage completion technologies: cemented and perforated liner or Plug-and-perf method and Openhole Sleeve Multi-stage method. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages. However, one of the most important questions is which method yields better gas production? Computation fluid dynamics (CFD) is a powerful tool for solving complex fluid flow problems. In well completion design, CFD plays a significant role aiding the completion engineers on making decision on well completion methods. In this study, a …

Gas And Water Flow Through Nanoscale Porous Media, Songyuan Liu 2013 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Gas And Water Flow Through Nanoscale Porous Media, Songyuan Liu

Masters Theses

"This work provides a lab experiment to describe the fluid diffusion in nanoscale porous media. By using ideal ceramic membranes which have uniform pore size in nanoscale and homogeneous pore distribution instead of shale or tight sandstone which have various pore sizes and complicated pore distribution and structure, a better understanding of fluid flow through nanoscale porous media could be gained.

Core flooding test were conducted by injecting nitrogen and water separately to describe gas and liquid flow in nanoscale porous media. With all the other factors known or controlled, pressure and flow rate were measured to calculate permeability. By …

Studying On Capacity Fade Mechanisms Of Li-Ion Batteries Through Modeling, Yiling Dai 2013 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Studying On Capacity Fade Mechanisms Of Li-Ion Batteries Through Modeling, Yiling Dai

Theses and Dissertations

Li-ion batteries are promising candidates as power sources for hybrid electric/electric vehicles, as well as storage devices for renewable energies (wind, solar). Longer life batteries are more desirable for large-scale application, which would help lower the capital cost ($/KW) and improve the system stability. However, the aging problem of Li-ion batteries obstructs their fast penetration into these markets. The cell life can be improved based on an in-depth understanding of the fade mechanisms. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore, through a mathematical modeling approach, failure mechanisms of Li-ion batteries.

To study the capacity fade of a LiMn2O4 (LMO) …

Development Of High-Throughput Catalyst Screening For Ammonia Based Selective Catalytic Reduction Of Nitric Oxide With Parallel Analysis Using Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging, Shahriar Salim 2013 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Development Of High-Throughput Catalyst Screening For Ammonia Based Selective Catalytic Reduction Of Nitric Oxide With Parallel Analysis Using Fourier Transform Infrared Imaging, Shahriar Salim

Theses and Dissertations

Lean-burn engines, which operate under excess air to fuel ratio offer significant fuel efficiency as well as contribute to the reductions of greenhouse gas emissions. However, lean burn engines produce three main pollutants carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and unburned or partially burned hydrocarbons (HC), which have detrimental effect on both environment and human life. The conventional three way catalyst (TWC) which was designed to reduce NOx under stoichiometric conditions is not effective under lean-burn engine exhaust condition. Recent studies have shown that copper (Cu) exchanged chabazite (CHA) type zeolites are very promising catalysts for urea or ammonia (NH3) …

Squeeze Flow Of Highly Concentrated Suspensions, Mohsen Nikkhoo 2013 University of South Carolina - Columbia

Squeeze Flow Of Highly Concentrated Suspensions, Mohsen Nikkhoo

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we investigated through experiment and model, the anomalous normal stress distribution during constant-force squeeze flow of highly concentrated suspensions. Using pressure-sensitive films the normal stress distribution is measured in suspensions of glass spheres in a Newtonian liquid undergoing constant-force squeeze flow. At volume fractions of solids up to 0.55, the normal stress distribution is independent of volume fraction and almost identical to the parabolic pressure distribution expected for Newtonian fluids. However, at higher volume fractions, the normal stresses become an order of magnitude larger near the center and very low beyond that region. At these high volume …

Parsing The Effects Of Physical Microenvironmental Cues On Stem Cell Adhesion And Lineage Specification, Greg M. Harris

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue engineering is a broad field geared toward improving or replacing biological material and comprises an immense collection of biological nuances to consider before strategies for clinical applications can be fully realized. Physical and biochemical signals are responsible for making up a cell's microenvironment to guide morphology and function through cell-extracellular matrix signaling, cell-cell signaling, and soluble signaling. In particular, a deeper understanding of these cell-extra cellular matrix factors guiding stem cell adhesion, spreading, and differentiation is crucial to harnessing the potential to develop tissue for regenerative purposes. Mounting evidence suggests that physical cues are a key to understanding the …

New Approach For Modeling Hybrid Pressure Swing Adsorption-Distillation Processes, Fan Wu 2013 University of South Carolina

New Approach For Modeling Hybrid Pressure Swing Adsorption-Distillation Processes, Fan Wu

Theses and Dissertations

A new methodology for modeling hybrid pressure swing adsorption (PSA)-distillation processes has been developed. Two hybrid systems were simulated as examples. One is for ethanol dehydration, and the other is for propane/propylene separation. Firstly, a distillation process simulator such as Chemsep was used to simulate the distillation process of the hybrid system, in which the PSA unit was treated as a "black box" with an assumed process performance. In this way, a hybrid PSA-distillation process can be analyzed simply by performing mass balances around these units and running Chemsep to determine the possibility of energy saving compared to a reference …

Effect Of Matrix Modulus On Cancer Stem Cells And Tumorsphere Formation In Three-Dimensional-Engineered Matrix, Samaneh Kamali Sarvestani 2013 University of South Carolina

Effect Of Matrix Modulus On Cancer Stem Cells And Tumorsphere Formation In Three-Dimensional-Engineered Matrix, Samaneh Kamali Sarvestani

Theses and Dissertations

Maintenance of cancer stem cells (CSCs) is regulated by their microenvironment. As cancer cells are affected by many factors in their microenvironment, a major challenge is to isolate the effect of a specific factor on cancer stem cells (CSCs) while keeping other factors unchanged. We have developed a synthetic inert 3D polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) gel culture system as a unique tool to study the effect of microenvironmental factors on CSCs response. Synthetic hydrogels provide the flexibility to design three-dimensional (3D) matrices to isolate and study individual factors in the tumor microenvironment.

The objective of this work was to investigate …

Effect Of Nanoparticle Size, Support, And Potassium Dopant On Ruthenium Activity For Levulinic Acid (La) Hydrogenation To Γ-Valerolactone (Gvl), Shuo Cao

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to study the effect of nano-particle size, support and potassium dopant on ruthenium activity on the levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation to ã-valeroactone (GVL).In hydrogenation reaction, H2 as the gas phase reactant reacts with the metal atoms at the surface of particle size, thus a high level of metal dispersion is critical to maximize the amount of atoms on the surface. This reaction has been widely investigated by varied metal supported catalysts and proved that Ru is the most active metal for it. However, most of researchers only focused on the reaction pathway, rather than …

The optical constants of tantalum pentoxide (Ta 2O5) are determined in a broad spectral region from the visible to the far infrared. Ta 2O5 films of various thicknesses from approximately 170 to 1600 nm aredeposited using reactive magnetron sputtering on Si substrates. X-ray diffraction shows that the as-deposited films are amorphous, and annealing in air at 800 °C results in the formation of nanocrystallineTa 2O5. Ellipsometry is used to obtain the dispersion in the visible and near-infrared. Two Fourier-transform infrared spectrometers are used to measure the transmittance and reflectance at wavelengths from 1 to 1000 μm. The surface topography and …

In this work, we explore the thermal properties of hexagonal transition metal dichalcogenide compounds with different average atomic masses but equivalent microstructures. Thermal conductivity values of sputtered thin films were compared to bulk crystals. The comparison revealed a >10 fold reduction in thin film thermal conductivity. Structural analysis of the films revealed a turbostratic structure with domain sizes on the order of 5–10 nm. Estimates of phonon scattering lengths at domain boundaries based on computationally derived group velocities were consistent with the observed film microstructure, and accounted for the reduction in thermal conductivity compared to values for bulk crystals.

Tannic Acid Coated Gold Nanorods Demonstrate A Distinctive Form Of Endosomal Uptake And Unique Distribution Within Cells, Emily A. Untener, Kristen K. Comfort, Elizabeth I. Maurer, Christin M. Grabinski, Donald A. Comfort, Saber M. Hussain

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

One of the primary challenges associated with nanoparticle-dependent biological applications is that endosomal entrapment in a physiological environment severely limits the desired targeting and functionality of the nanoconstructs. This study sought to overcome that challenge through a systematic approach of gold nanorod (GNR) functionalization: evaluating the influence of both aspect ratio and surface chemistry on targeted cellular internalization rates and preservation of particle integrity. Owing to their unique spectral properties and enhanced surface area, GNRs possess great potential for the advancement of nanobased delivery and imaging applications. However, their ability for efficient intracellular delivery while maintaining their specific physiochemical parameters …
