The Yin And Yang Actions Of North American Ginseng Root In Modulating The Immune Function Of Macrophages, Chike Godwin Azike, Paul Abrahams Charpentier, Jirui Hou, Hua Pei, Edmund Man King Lui

Physiology and Pharmacology Publications

BACKGROUND: Immuno-modulatory effects of ginseng, including both immuno-stimulatory and immuno-suppressive effects, have been widely reported. This study aims to determine whether the paradoxical immuno-modulatory effect is related to unique phytochemical profiles of different North American (NA) ginseng, namely aqueous (AQ) and alcoholic (ALC) extracts.

METHODS: AQ and ALC extracts were prepared and their immuno-bioactivity were studied in vitro in murine macrophages (Raw 264.7) through measuring the direct stimulatory production of pro-inflammatory mediator and cytokines as well as the suppression of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulatory response by the two extracts. Gel permeation chromatography was used to fractionate and isolate phytochemicals for characterization of …

Epoxy/Pcl/Cnf Nanocomposite Towards Electrically Triggered Self-Healing And Reversible Adhesion, Lawrence Matthew Levy 2011 Syracuse University

Epoxy/Pcl/Cnf Nanocomposite Towards Electrically Triggered Self-Healing And Reversible Adhesion, Lawrence Matthew Levy

Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All

In this report, we summarize the results of research related to development of an electrically-triggered reversible-adhesive material. The material is made of an epoxy comprised of diglcidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) and 4,4’-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS). By combining the epoxy with PCL a “bricks and mortar” morphology is created with reversible adhesion properties. A phenomenon known as differential expansive bleeding (DEB) is the driving force of the self-healing and reversible-adhesion. The epoxy/PCL was embedded within electrically conductive carbon nanofibers (CNF) created from electrospun poly(acrylonitrile) (PAN). The material’s high conductivity allowed convenient heating with a power source. Initial tests revealed a lack of …

De Novo Gene Synthesis By Rapid Polymerase Chain Assembly Coupled With Immunoaffinity Purification: A Novel Process And Workstation, Joel R. Termaat

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The de novo synthesis of genes is emerging as a powerful tool in biotechnology. The ability to synthesize genes of any desired sequence opens the door to seemingly unlimited research possibilities. Major advances have been made recently in de novo gene synthesis, with Polymerase Chain Assembly (PCA) routinely used to construct functional sequences from short single-stranded oligonucleotides. However, current PCA techniques are lacking in speed and fidelity. Additionally, substantial undesired reactants/products are present in the final reaction. A novel process and accompanying workstation has been developed that incorporates rapid PCA synthesis coupled with subsequent affinity purification of the synthesis mixture. …

The geochemical characteristics of coal cleaning rejects (CCR) in Santa Catarina State, Brazil, were investigated. Around 3.5 million ton/ year of coal waste are dumped in Santa Catarina State. Coal beneficiation by froth flotation results in large amounts of CCR composed of coaly and mineral matter, the latter characterized by the occurrence of sulphide minerals and a broad array of leachable elements. The total and leachable contents of more than 60 elements were analyzed. Atmospheric exposure promotes sulphide oxidation that releases substantial sulphate loads as well as Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Cl- and Al3+ …

Hemocompatibility Of Silicon-Based Substrates For Biomedical Implant Applications, Lingyan Liu

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Silicon membranes with highly uniform nanopore sizes fabricated using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology allow for the development of miniaturized implants such as those needed for renal replacement therapies. However, the blood compatibility of silicon has thus far been an unresolved issue in the use of these substrates in implantable biomedical devices. We report the results of hemocompatibility studies using bare silicon, polysilicon, and modified silicon substrates. The surface modifications tested have been shown to reduce protein and/or platelet adhesion, thus potentially improving biocompatibility of silicon. Hemocompatibility was evaluated under four categories—coagulation (thrombin–antithrombin complex, TAT generation), complement activation (complement protein, C3a …

Glasses for medical applications are used in particulate form or as a cement component. This work was undertaken to determine structural changes in 0.48SiO2-0.36ZnO-0.12CaO-0.04SrO glass when the SiO2 is substituted with 5 mol% increments of TiO2. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the presence of crystallinity. This occurred after additions of 20 mol% TiO2. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) and Network connectivity (NC) calculations determined that by increasing the TiO2 content, the Tg and NC reduced (Tg 670 °C to 632 °C, NC 1.83 to -1.14) suggesting that TiO2 acts as …

A Critical Review On Recent Methods Used For Economically Viable And Eco-Friendly Development Of Microalgae As A Potential Feedstock For Synthesis Of Biodiesel, Yogesh C. Sharma, Bhaskar Singh, John Korstad

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

Microalgae are being considered as a viable feedstock for large-scale production of biodiesel. However, though it may look simpler to obtain lipids from microalgae, the overall process of choosing an algal strain, cultivation, harvesting, dewatering, and extraction of oil is quite complicated and not economically prudent at this time. A thorough understanding of algae and the overall biodiesel production process discussed in this paper is vital so that focused research might lower the costs involved. Various diverse species of microalgae are currently being used as feedstocks for biofuel. Heterotrophic culture may be preferred over photoautotrophic cultivation. For cultivation, specially fabricated …

A Novel Biodiesel And Glycerol Carbonate Production Plant, Nghi T. Nguyen, Yaşar Demirel

Yaşar Demirel Publications

Crude glycerol is the byproduct of biodiesel production plant and the economic value of glycerol may affect the profitability of the biodiesel production plant. As the production rate of bioglycerol increases, its market values drop considerably. Therefore, conversion of bioglycerol into value-added products can reduce the overall cost, hence, leading to a more economical biodiesel production plant. In a direct carboxylation reaction, CO2 reacts with glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate and water. This study presents a direct comparison of the economic analysis of the conventional biodiesel production plant and the possible next generation biodiesel-glycerol carbonate production plant. At the …

Stability Of Affinity Based Layer-By-Layer Polymeric Self-Assemblies For Oral Wound Applications, Sundar Prasanth Authimoolam

Theses and Dissertations--Chemical and Materials Engineering

Oral mucositis is a painful and debilitating chronic inflammatory condition that can result from chemo and/or radiotherapy. While current treatment strategies which provide temporary relief exist, there is still an unmet clinical need for a robust long active barrier strategy which can simultaneously provide protection and release drug to enhance the wound healing response. It is proposed that an affinity based layer-by-layer self-assembled barrier administered as a series of mouth rinses can allow for wound specific drug delivery, providing an effective regenerative therapy.

In this work, biotinylated poly(acrylic acid) is used to develop LBL assemblies based upon biotin-streptavidin affinity interactions. …

New Pt monolayer electrocatalysts were prepared using galvanic displacement of a copper monolayer deposited at underpotentials on a Pd core. by performing underpotential deposition twice, two monolayers were deposited, forming a core-shell structure with double shells. the double shells consist of an outermost shell of Pt monolayer and a sublayer shell of Pd-Au alloy. It was found that by adjusting the compositions of the alloy sublayer, it is possible to mediate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the Pt catalysts. an alloy with 10% (atomic) Au was found to be the most active among the catalysts tested. Furthermore, the …

Labyrinthine Instability In Thin Liquid Films, P. Neogi 2010 Missouri University of Science and Technology

Labyrinthine Instability In Thin Liquid Films, P. Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a thin liquid film on a solid surface has a thickness corresponding to a particular part the spinodal region of the disjoining pressure versus thickness isotherm, the film breaks down. One of the patterns that emerges on the breakdown has been referred to as wavy instability. It is compared here to the labyrinthine instability seen in magnetic films. the system is modeled following the procedure used in magnetic systems, and the pattern of wavy instability is broken down into a curved thick-thin film in equilibrium with a flat thin-thin film of constant thickness. Minimization of free energy leads to …

Color Intensity Method For Hydrogel Oxygen Sensor Array, Jongwon Park, Wonhak Hong, Chang-Soo Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The oxygen imaging technique to obtain a 2-D distribution is a convenient method because it does not require individual addressing of each sensing element in a sensor array. Until recently, color charge coupled devices (CCDs) have rarely been used for oxygen imaging in spite of usefulness for analyzing the spectral content of images. in this work, a color CCD camera was used for luminescence intensity imaging. Two methods of color intensity analysis are investigated and compared. the first method is to analyze the total Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color intensity of the original color image. the second method involves extracting the red …

Synthesis And Analytical Evaluation Of Folate Conjugates For Use In Cancer Cell Detection, Sneha Reddy Kuthuru 2010 Governors State University

Synthesis And Analytical Evaluation Of Folate Conjugates For Use In Cancer Cell Detection, Sneha Reddy Kuthuru

All Capstone Projects

Recent clinical studies have shown the importance of folate receptor in drug delivery system as they increase the potency and reduce toxicity of many cancer therapies. The folate receptor alpha ( FR-a) binds with high affinity for folic acid and serves for receptor mediated transport of folate into cells. Folate is necessary for DNA metabolism and thus it is speculated that rapidly dividing cancer cells have an increased requirement for folic acid. It is known that FR-a levels are elevated in specific malignant diseases (solid tumors, leukemia) and thus the FR receptor serves as useful targeting moiety for the diagnosis …
