We Will Join The Spheres Once More’: Social Critique And The Scientific Imagination In Johanna Beyer’S Status Quo, Charissa Noble 2019 University of San Diego

We Will Join The Spheres Once More’: Social Critique And The Scientific Imagination In Johanna Beyer’S Status Quo, Charissa Noble

Music: Faculty Scholarship

Sexy cyborgs, gruesome monsters, invasions and body-snatchings: common perceptions of science fiction tend to cite such “pulpy” scenarios as evidence that the genre at best lacks substance and at worst supports misogynist and xenophobic views. Yet, if one adopts a broader definition of science fiction as any piece using science-inspired fantasy as a mode of social discourse, the genre then encompasses a dizzying array of canonic literary works spanning the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. This expansion of science fiction to include works that traffic in what could be called the “scientific imagination” need not be contained to the artistic …

Traversing Two Worlds: Influences Upon Career Perspectives Of Mexican-American Music Education Majors, Amy A. Weimer, Virginia Wayman Davis, Daniel Salinas

School of Music Faculty Publications

The present study examines the career pathways of Mexican-American music majors. Participants included 42 (17 female, 25 male) music majors enrolled at a Hispanic-Serving Institution in South Texas. The study focused on identifying relations among students' levels of acculturation and career goals. Students’ cultural behavior, career self-efficacy, extrinsic and intrinsic work values, motivation, and social bonding were measured via standardized questionnaires. Results indicate that a greater degree of adhering to both traditional and American culture predict higher career outcomes, including culture and gender interactions.

The Bridge To Mainstream Music-Latin Pop Crossing Over Into Mainstream Music In The United States, Selena Fregoso 2019 Whittier College

The Bridge To Mainstream Music-Latin Pop Crossing Over Into Mainstream Music In The United States, Selena Fregoso

Whittier Scholars Program

Latin Pop within mainstream music has become a trend in the United States that has allowed for Spanish and English to coexist in one track. The causes of the emergence of this trend are the Latino population growth, streaming platforms, and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s son “Despacito. This trend is impacting the music industry’s future by allowing artists to reach more people and expand their audience. The trend also implements Latino culture in American culture by creating unity between fans from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. By looking at Latino population growth, Spotify streaming service, and music rankings through …

The Use Of Deep Learning Distributed Representations In The Identification Of Abusive Text, Susan McKeever, hao chen, Sarah Jane Delany 2019 Technological University Dublin

The Use Of Deep Learning Distributed Representations In The Identification Of Abusive Text, Susan Mckeever, Hao Chen, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

The selection of optimal feature representations is a critical step in the use of machine learning in text classification. Traditional features (e.g. bag of words and n-grams) have dominated for decades, but in the past five years, the use of learned distributed representations has become increasingly common. In this paper, we summarise and present a categorisation of the stateof-the-art distributed representation techniques, including word and sentence embedding models. We carry out an empirical analysis of the performance of the various feature representations using the scenario of detecting abusive comments. We compare classification accuracies across a range of off-the-shelf embedding models …

A Hybrid Process Mining Framework For Automated Simulation Modelling For Healthcare, Susan McKeever, Waleed Abo Hamad, Mohammed Mesabbah 2019 Technological University Dublin

A Hybrid Process Mining Framework For Automated Simulation Modelling For Healthcare, Susan Mckeever, Waleed Abo Hamad, Mohammed Mesabbah

Conference papers

Advances in data and process mining algorithms combined with the availability of sophisticated information systems have created an encouraging environment for innovations in simulation modelling. Researchers have investigated the integration between such algorithms and business process modelling to facilitate the automation of building simulation models. These endeavors have resulted in a prototype termed Auto Simulation Model Builder (ASMB) for DES models. However, this prototype has limitations that undermine applying it on complex systems. This paper presents an extension of the ASMB framework previously developed by authors adopted for healthcare systems. The proposed framework offers a comprehensive solution for resources handling …

Electric Guitar, John A. Drobnicki 2019 CUNY York College

Electric Guitar, John A. Drobnicki

Publications and Research

Hollow-body guitars could not be heard over other instruments in swing bands, so pick-ups were added to the guitars, which often resulted in feedback and distortion. This led to the development of solid-body electric guitars which needed amplification in order to be heard.

Distillation Of Sound: Dub In Jamaica And The Creation Of Culture, Eric J. Abbey 2019 Wayne State University

Distillation Of Sound: Dub In Jamaica And The Creation Of Culture, Eric J. Abbey

Wayne State University Dissertations

In the early 1970s, the culture of Jamaica shifted politically and culturally with the introduction of the mixing board in music. This writing centers on the ways in which technology created a culture of dub reggae that has gone on to affect the world. The major albums and engineers that influenced this change are the focus here. By doing so, we can view how large changes in technology affected the society of Jamaica and how this led to significant cultural development. With Raymond Williams’ definition of culture and Thomas Vendrys’ structure of Dub music, the culture is defined, furthered, and …

Music And The Presidency: How Campaign Songs Sold The Image Of Presidential Candidates, Gary M. Bogers

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In this thesis, I will discuss the importance of campaign songs and how they were used throughout three distinctly different U.S. presidential elections: the 1960 campaign of Senator John Fitzgerald Kennedy against Vice President Richard Milhouse Nixon, the 1984 reelection campaign of President Ronald Wilson Reagan against Vice President Walter Frederick Mondale, and the 2008 campaign of Senator Barack Hussein Obama against Senator John Sidney McCain. In doing so, there will be an analysis of how music was used to sell the image of these presidential candidates through both its juxtaposition with other forms of mass media (television advertisements, radio, …

The Effectiveness Of The Natural Ear On Adults Ability To Accurately Match Pitch, Kendra Nicole Rosales 2019 University of Texas at El Paso

The Effectiveness Of The Natural Ear On Adults Ability To Accurately Match Pitch, Kendra Nicole Rosales

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Background: Many theories, such as oral motor, perceptual, and sensorimotor deficits, have been posited to explain inaccurate pitch matching abilities. The current study identifies with the sensorimotor deficit theory and found it to be the most plausible explanation for inaccurate singing abilities. The Natural Ear (NE) program was designed to process voice productions in real-time and filter out the discordant harmonics, allowing a person to hear only their F0.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the Natural Ear program in increasing pitch matching accuracy in singers.

Methods: A total of 50 participants were included …

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher 2019 Bucknell University

Covert Singing In Anticipatory Auditory Imagery, Tim A. Pruitt, Andrea R. Halpern, P. Q. Pfordresher

Faculty Journal Articles

To date, several fMRI studies reveal activation in motor planning areas during musical auditory imagery. We addressed whether such activations may give rise to peripheral motor activity, termed subvocalization or covert singing, using surface electromyography. sensors placed on extrinsic laryngeal muscles, facial muscles, and a control site on the bicep measured muscle activity during auditory imagery that preceded singing, as well as during the completion of a visual imagery task. Greater activation was found in laryngeal and lip muscles for auditory than for visual imagery tasks, whereas no differences across tasks were found for other sensors. Furthermore, less accurate singers …

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

My education at the University of Northern Iowa in the Master of Music, Jazz Pedagogy track has included two full academic years of continuous study as well as one year of independent study. During my two years in residence, I had the pleasure of experiencing an in-depth curriculum of classes, ensembles, and applied lessons, as well as opportunities to lead large and small ensembles. All of these components were designed to make me into a more effective jazz musician in the disciplines of performance, composition, arranging, and pedagogy.

The latter of these disciplines acts as the synthesis of the recital …
