Non-Performance Music Classes: Benefits & Hurdles, Brian Lonergan 2021 Georgia College

Non-Performance Music Classes: Benefits & Hurdles, Brian Lonergan

Graduate Research Showcase

THE BENEFITS AND HURDLES OF OFFERING NON-PERFORMANCE MUSIC CLASSES AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL

Brian Lonergan

Many schools at the Secondary Level focus their music program around performing ensembles, such as band, orchestra, or choir. These ensembles are based in traditional Western music practices and exclude a large portion of the school’s student population. The purpose of this literature review was to share the benefits of providing non-performance music classes, as well as highlight some of the likely roadblocks that may be encountered when trying to implement these classes into the school curriculum. There are a number of anecdotal accounts of …

Music And The Brain: A Review Of Neuroscientific And Clinical Applications, Jacqueline LaRivee 2021 Merrimack College

Music And The Brain: A Review Of Neuroscientific And Clinical Applications, Jacqueline Larivee

Honors Senior Capstone Projects

My research examines the relationship between neuroscience and music, exploring its clinical applications. I extensively review the specific neuroanatomic structures implicated in musical perception. Knowing the function of each brain structure as it relates to musical perception provides insight as to how music is able to elicit certain physical and emotional responses. As music interacts with the human brain, it is also able to provide social, cognitive, and emotional benefits. Given these benefits, my research argues that music is an effective therapeutic intervention for vulnerable populations. I examine the impact of music therapy on preterm infants, hearing impaired individuals, intellectually …

A Concept Ost, Samantha Taylor

Honors 499 Theses and Creative Projects

A Concept OST was developed during my final year at the University of Maine at Farmington. This collection of original music represents the skills I have learned while studying composition and music theory.

Some of the inspirations that helped me shape the sonic world I created include Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts), Junichi Masuda (Pokemon) Jake Kaufman (Shovel Knight), and Toby Fox (Undertale). These composers are known for their narrative-driven compositional work for video games that fit into the Role-Playing-Game playstyle. My primary mode of research was listening to these game tracks and playing the video games …

Aural Skills In Developing Musicians: Uncovering Disparities In Secondary Music Learning, Karly Fitch

Senior Theses

This study was conducted to evaluate the scope of aural skills development occurring in secondary music classrooms. The researcher hypothesized that several disparities would exist, namely regarding melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictation. Participants took a survey in which they were asked to recall from a prescribed list, aural skills learned while in high school. They were also asked to provide demographic information including high school attended, current college major, and the number of collegiate aural skills courses completed to date. A number of subjective questions were asked as well, such as desired skills prior to collegiate study, and how aural …

Access Restored: The Role Of Music And Worship In Christian Reconciliation, Daniel Raymond Gray 2021 Liberty University

Access Restored: The Role Of Music And Worship In Christian Reconciliation, Daniel Raymond Gray

Masters Theses

This project explores the meaning of reconciliation to the Father through the sacrifice of Christ. At its fundamental level, the gospel contains the most radical example of reconciliation, where the offended is the party to reestablish contact. Vertical reconciliation is to be the precursor to horizontal reconciliation. The problem is that the body of Christ is far too divided. This division takes on a number of forms within the church, none of which is biblical. As the capstone project of an M.A. in Music and Worship degree, the purpose of the study is twofold. The first is to examine how …

Bernhard Heiden's Sonata For Alto Saxophone And Piano, Tyler Cosley 2021 Longwood University

Bernhard Heiden's Sonata For Alto Saxophone And Piano, Tyler Cosley

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

My enhancement for MUSC 332, History of Music II, is a look at the life of the German-American composer Bernhard Heiden and how his Sonata for Alto Saxophone and Piano is an outstanding representation of his compositional style. Throughout this process I have studied, learned, and performed the second movement of Heiden's sonata on the alto saxophone. I worked on this piece in my private saxophone lessons with my professor, Dr. Kinzer, so I could accurately portray the character of Heiden's music. This process helped me learn more about Heiden as a composer, and also gave me a greater appreciation …

The Role And Possible Impact Of Music Administrators On School District Music Programs, Tracee Garrison White 2021 Liberty University

The Role And Possible Impact Of Music Administrators On School District Music Programs, Tracee Garrison White

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

In order to assist in building a successful music program that is conducive to the learning of all students within a school district, administrators and board members must be informed of the role and impact of a district music administrator. The purpose of this qualitative research study was to identify perspectives that have not yet been explored and documented concerning the positive effect district music administrators have on school music programs. Perspectives on support, accountability and advocacy have emerged as themes through an exploration of limited existing literature and feedback from questionnaires. Although the information is available for administrators who …

A Study Of American Rural Music Educators: The Impact On Community Involvement In Music, Stanley Norman Harris Iii

This study intends to discover and evaluate positive and negative relationships that music educators experience while teaching in rural educational settings and to discover if broader community involvement can help mitigate resource reductions. Influences such as the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) and Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) have accelerated reductions in music programs. The purpose of the investigation is to recognize the feasibility of rural music educators leveraging increased support through community involvement to benefit their local music programs and students. The study's focus is twofold: first, to discover and examine what causes rural music educators to not participate …

Irish Rock Music Amid A Time Of Troubles: Thin Lizzy And U2 As A Bridge During A Time Of Division, Jacey L. Thomas

Honors College Theses

The Troubles were a period of crisis and violence in Ireland in the latter half of the twentieth century. Loyalists, Unionists, Republicans, and Nationalists brutally fought against each other over the issue of whether or not Northern Ireland should remain in the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland to form one united country. The conflict also resulted in ethnic and religious tensions for many Protestants and Catholics who were compelled to choose sides over this issue, owing to their ties to the deep-rooted history of animosity between the two Christian populations. As a result, the Troubles, which lasted …

Japanese Popular Culture Influences In Contemporary Black American Rap And Hip-Hop, Rodrianna Gaddy 2021 University of South Carolina

Japanese Popular Culture Influences In Contemporary Black American Rap And Hip-Hop, Rodrianna Gaddy

Senior Theses

Since hip-hop’s emergence in New York during the early 1970s, there has been an increasing amount of Japanese popular cultural references in Black American rap and hip-hop. This increase is made possible through globalization and innovations in communication technology. Most previous research on the trend has focused primarily on the impact hip-hop has had on Japanese culture, and how Afro-Asian collaborations have shaped music produced in the East and West. However, this thesis focuses on the influence various forms of Japanese media and history have had on contemporary Black American rap and hip-hop. I evaluate how artists can display these …
