The King With The Vīṇā Flag – Perspectives Of Rāvaṇa In Film, Achintya Prahlad 2021 Ashoka University

The King With The Vīṇā Flag – Perspectives Of Rāvaṇa In Film, Achintya Prahlad

Journal of Religion & Film

Rāvaṇa, the ten-headed Rākṣasa (‘demon’) king of the epic the Rāmāyaṇa, is the most fascinating of all the antagonists in films based on Hindu mythology, so powerful that even the Sun cannot rise without his orders, and celebrated as an unparalleled musician-scholar and great devotee of the god Śiva. His passion for the vīṇā, a string instrument with divine associations, is so great that this instrument adorns his royal flag as its emblem. His consciousness of his supreme powers and great knowledge soon gives way to ahaṅkāra (hubris) and lust, which leads to his eventual downfall and death at the …

Pandemic Music: Developing Music Compositions For Performance During Covid-19, Maia R. Denzler 2021 Portland State University

Pandemic Music: Developing Music Compositions For Performance During Covid-19, Maia R. Denzler

University Honors Theses

The Covid-19 pandemic posed an interesting challenge for performing artists: How does one continue to make art and perform while maintaining performer and audience safety? As a music student preparing for my Junior Music Composition Recital, the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic forced me to reevaluate the direction and nature of the music I was writing. This led to the composition of three new works which were specifically written to be performed while adhering to social distancing and mask requirements. The three Meditations for Woodwind and Electronics explore themes of nature and were pre-recorded to maximize safety. Des-C-H-Ut-Es (Deschutes) is a …

An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins 2021 The University of Southern Mississippi

An Application Of Natural Learning Processes In The Preparation Of Edward Gregson's Trumpet Concerto, James Jenkins

Doctoral Projects

Concerto for Trumpet and Strings by Edward Gregson is a substantial work of the late twentieth century underperformed among trumpet players. The primary reasons for its relative neglect are its technical challenges and the demands of endurance it places on the player. A well-designed approach to the preparation of this work will benefit students and professional players wishing to prepare for a performance of the work. This project will combine the knowledge of researchers and teachers in formulating specific practice approaches for the concerto’s challenges.

The findings of neuroscientists and psychologists, gained through testing and measurement, will be consulted along …

Pedagogical Solo Piano Nocturnes: A Progressive Leveling With Annotations On Stylistic, Technical, And Musical Challenges And Benefits, Michaela Anne Boros

Theses and Dissertations

Nocturnes have remained in the standard piano literature for over two hundred years. However, students may not study this genre of repertoire until the advanced level of playing, and might therefore lack the full skills or knowledge necessary for successful nocturne performance. The purpose of this study is to provide a current, comprehensive, didactic resource on Romantic-style pedagogical piano nocturne literature from early elementary to early advanced levels, to aid teachers in the education of their students.

This study comprises four chapters, a bibliography, and two appendices. Chapter 1 consists of an introduction, purpose of the study, need for the …

Quantitative Data Collection On The Fundamental Components Of Saxophone Tone Production, Matthew Troy Castner 2021 University of South Carolina

Quantitative Data Collection On The Fundamental Components Of Saxophone Tone Production, Matthew Troy Castner

Theses and Dissertations

Wind instrument pedagogy has historically been limited by the inability to collect quantitative data on the relationships and impact of different elements of tone production. This study collected and analyzed data on three of the fundamental components of saxophone tone production: embouchure pressure, air velocity, and air direction. The results help build a better understanding of the inner workings of producing a characteristic saxophone sound.

Six classical alto saxophone players completed a variety of exercises to isolate and measure each of these components. The data was collected using a force-sensitive resistor and a pitot tube, each connected to an Arduino …

Un Piano «Tòxic»: Chopin I El Seu ‘Pianino’ En Temps De La Covid, Antoni Pizà 2021 CUNY Graduate Center

Un Piano «Tòxic»: Chopin I El Seu ‘Pianino’ En Temps De La Covid, Antoni Pizà

Publications and Research

An Annotated Bibliography Of Flute Repertoire By Iranian Female Composers, Roya Farzaneh 2021 University of South Carolina

An Annotated Bibliography Of Flute Repertoire By Iranian Female Composers, Roya Farzaneh

Theses and Dissertations

Compositions by Iranian female composers have rarely been explored or documented. The purpose of this research is to create an annotated bibliography of works by Iranian female composers written for flute. This document will serve as a reference of flute literature for scholars, teachers, and performers to encourage the performance of music composed by Iranian women. Through this research, I hope to increase the exposure of these compositions and amplify interest in performing works written by underrepresented composers.

The annotated bibliography lists information about the repertoire including instrumentation, compositional year, length of piece, publishing, available recordings, commission information, a pedagogical …

A Conductor’S Guide To J. N. Hummel’S Forgotten Oratorio: Der Durchzug Durchs Rote Meer, Rebecca J. Ostermann 2021 University of South Carolina

A Conductor’S Guide To J. N. Hummel’S Forgotten Oratorio: Der Durchzug Durchs Rote Meer, Rebecca J. Ostermann

Theses and Dissertations

Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s only oratorio, Der Durchzug durchs rote Meer, was lost to the musical world until around 2004. Hummel (1778–1837) was greatly esteemed during his life as a concert pianist and as a composer, and several of his choral works were among those highly regarded by his contemporaries. Interest in his works, along with Hummel scholarship, has increased in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Hummel’s oratorio is for Classical orchestra plus guitar, harp, and bass drum, four to ten vocal soli, and chorus. Its thirteen numbers run about 51 minutes, recounting the biblical story of Moses and Pharaoh, the …

Adele Aus Der Ohe: Pioneering Through Recital Programming At Carnegie Hall, 1895, Grace Shepard

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this investigation is to focus on the career and times of Adele aus der Ohe and piano performance in the Gilded Age United States. Carnegie Hall, founded in 1891, was one of the first major halls that witnessed and documented solo piano recital programming. Through analysis of Adele aus der Ohe’s programs intended for Carnegie Hall, it is possible to understand some of the complexities surrounding the solo recital, piano performance, and audience culture at the turn of the 20th century.

Focus on Adele aus der Ohe allows further understanding of her legacy and contribution to …

Inclusion Initiative Project (Final Collaborative Composition Project), Brian Ciach

Assignment Prompts

Write a piece for 4-part chorale using text related to Social Justice and Racial Equity. For example, set the words of a speech by John Lewis to music or depict the noble character of MLK Jr. in music. You may alternatively write a solo piano piece, a work for piano and solo instrument, and/or other chamber ensemble (no more than 4 instruments please—which instruments are in your group?). The hard rule is that the work must be collaborative and inspired by our times from some other art form, and it must explicitly depict its source.
