After arriving in Stockholm (July 10), we bid a fond farewell to our bus driver, Bjorn, and most of our Swedish companions, and boarded the Silja-line ferry Symphony for Helsinki. The ship was more of a floating shopping mall than a cruise ship, but a good time was had by all as we spread ourselves from Commodore Class to Steerage. Some of us slept, some took in the Casino and bar, and Don thought that he had been able to gel a glimpse of Siaro. A peaceful night, the Baltic was very calm, and by daylight we were steaming amongst …

Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
The 2007 Summer JBS Swedish safari opened on July 4th in Borlange at the Jussi Bjorling Museum there, a place that some of us regard as the "center of the universe." This year's Museum program was unusual in the emphasis on singers other than JB, and on aspects of Jussi in areas other than singing. Really. Harald welcomed all with good cheer (and a new haircut), and we got a running start on a couple of very full days. Music journalist Goran Forsling gave us a splendid overview of Swedish singers of the past on Wednesday morning, followed in the …

The Jussi Bjorling Stipendium prize has been awarded by the Kungliga Operans Solister (Royal Opera's Soloists, www.operasolisterna.se) regularly since 1970. The award is normally given to singers and includes a substantial cash prize to someone active in the musical life in Dalarna, regardless of whether that person is a singer.

Ups And Downs For The Bjorlings In March 1958
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Anna-Lisa and Jussi Bjorling flew to New York in late February 1958, with a major tour of some 20 concerts scheduled for Jussi during March and April. Jussi kicked off his tour with a sold-out concert al Carnegie Hall that became one of his most famous, since it was recorded and eventually released by RCA [Cantor Don Goldberg had a role in finding the original tapes, see Ch. 27 of Jussi for this and more on reviews and other events of this tour]. At this time, Jussi was in great form vocally, with no health complaints.

I have a special memory of Anna-Lisa Bjorling, that came to me at once when I heard of her death. In March 1957 I was in the Army, stationed in Petersburg, VA. I went AWOL (easy to do; I did it many times without being caught) to attend the March 19th preformance of Trovatore in Philadelphia. I got off the bus, met my Jussi biddy, Mike Sanders, who came in form New York City. We didn't have tickets, but just went on inside and mingled with the crowd. We got caught and claimed that "We're guests of Mr. Bjorling." We …

Over a year ago, the Bjoring family lost their eldest member, Jussi's widow, Anna-Lisa Bjorling-Barkman. She died on November 24,2006, in Stockholm after a short illness. With her passing the members of the Jussi Bjorling societies also lost someone very special, their devoted patron and societal friend.

Our JBS-USA Board met in Minneapolis during June 9-11, 2006, weekend at the same time as the local Schubert Club's Mid-Summer Song Festival. Our idea was to attract some JBS members to join us for a Jussi-program to be held at the interesting American Swedish Institute there, and to participate in some of the Schubert Club's excellent programs: free lunchtime lieder recitals, concerts by Hakan Hagegard, Bolcom & Morris, and others. The JBS program might even attract some new members

Those of us who heard some of Jussi Bjorling's radio broadcasts from the 1940s and 1950s in a good sound, via recordings obtained from the Library of Congress in 2002 by the JB Museum, have wanted to make those generally available. But the legal arrangements agreed to in 2002 forbade general release of that material, and or attempts to negotiate new arrangements with NBC Universal have been met with completely unrealistic financial demands.

Do you want to find reviews of some of Jussi's concerts or opera performances? That is simply done by using Google (www.google.com) and keying in the appropriate words. For instance, google "Bjoerling San Francisco Opera," and you can find that he made his debut with that company in 1940 in La Boheme and Un Ballo in Maschera

Jussi Bjorling's Italian Songs, Harald Henrysson
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
Italian songs were not a particularly large part of JB's repertoire, but the existing recordings show that in this smaller format -as in opera- he could compete well with native singers. We know that Jussi sang 11 different songs at some time, and nine of those are preserved (I do not include Se i miei sospiri," which is not of Italian origin although written to an Italian text, and has been attributed to Alessandro Stradella. Nor is "Dreams of long ago," included, the song written by Enrico Caruso - and sung by Jussi in Swedish- because the original is in …

Rigoletto is fortunate to have many good recordings that capture the drama as well as the opportunities for vocal display that are inherent in this breakthrough masterpiece among Verdi's operas. My own favorite version has been RCAs classic 1956 recording made with Met Opera stars Robert Merrill, Roberta Peters, Giorgio Tozzi, and of course Jussi Bjorling, all in prime voice and with Janel Perlea leading the Rome Opera forces.

A Few Words On Vocal Technique, Edward Walter
Journal of the Jussi Björling Societies of the USA & UK
When I first heard recordings of Jussi Bjorling, I was struck by the brightness of his voice, the beauty of his sound, and the brilliance of his high notes. He surpassed all the tenors I had heard on records except Enrico Caruso. When I saw Bjorling live, I became aware of another advantage he had over other singers: his voice was produced effortlessly, as if it floated outside and above him. Bjorling's technique became the standard I used to judge other singers. It also led me to analyze singing technique and style.
