Leveraging Cultural Assets Of Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Individuals In Music Therapy: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study, Emma Grace King
Theses and Dissertations--Music
The purpose of this thesis was to explore how music therapists can engage in cultural humility and leverage cultural assets of those who are culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD). The primary research question involved in this study was: “In what ways can music therapists leverage cultural assets of CLD individuals in practice?” Sub-questions were: “What awareness, knowledge, and skills do music therapists need to grow in culturally sensitive practice?” “How can music therapists whose first language is English effectively serve linguistically diverse individuals?” “What steps might music therapists take to effectively serve culturally diverse individuals?” and “How might cultural and …

Constructing A Cultural Bridge: The Compositional Approach And International Impact Of Albert Mangelsdorff’S Now Jazz Ramwong, Michael Desousa
Theses and Dissertations--Music
In the period following World War II, countries such as Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand were under constant intellectual bombardment from global superpowers vying for political influence. West Germany, a newly established ally of Western democracy, was a small part of a global effort to spread this democracy to Asia. Working alongside Joachim-Ernst Berendt and the Goethe Institute, the jazz trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff arranged an album which sought to merge both Western European and Asian music. The album, Now Jazz Ramwong (1964), and accompanying fifty-concert tour helped pioneer a lasting cultural connection between Western Europe and Asia. The methodology behind Now …

The Lived Supervision Experiences Of Disabled Music Therapists, Emma Martin
Theses and Dissertations--Music
Within and outside of the music therapy field, there has been a recent push for more conversations and literature on social justice. However, disability has been largely left out of this dialogue. Disabled individuals have unique worldviews, and their voices as individuals and practitioners should be an integral part of social justice within music therapy. This study examined disabled music therapists' supervision experiences. All music therapists receive supervision during their education and clinical training, and many go on to supervise. Supervision therefore presents an opportunity to advance the profession by striving to understand disabled music therapists’ perspectives. The purpose of …

Theses and Dissertations--Music
The Psalmodia Project is a set of twelve compositions based on the text of preselected psalms from the Bible. The book of Psalms, part of the wisdom literature section of the Biblical Canon, is a kaleidoscope of human emotions with a total of 150 poems describing ancient Hebrew stories of faith full of plot nuances easily represented by musical expression. The compositions cover a large variety of musical genres, from Latin jazz to classical music, from small to large ensembles, with an instrumentation that employs sounds from all five different instrumental families: keyboards, strings, percussion (pitched and non-pitched), woodwinds, and …

More Than De Colores: Expanding Students' Scope Of Spanish Language Songs For Learning And Use Within Music Therapy, Amanda Norman
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Culture is a critical component of a music therapist’s knowledge and mindset. However, undergraduate music therapy students are lacking adequate materials to learn music from a variety of cultural backgrounds. This project seeks to inform current and future music therapists of the variety of music that can be found within a single culture, focusing on music of Latin American, Hispanic, and Latino heritage. This project consists of a songbook of Spanish language songs that will be offered as a resource to current and future music therapy students at Eastern Michigan University.

How To Vocally Train Transgender Singers: A Thorough Literature Review, Sydney A. Timmer
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The knowledge of training transgender voices is just beginning to make its way into mainstream music education. However, there needs to be more known and a curriculum in place to address this critical topic. Transgender students face many unique challenges in the voice studio, and educators must have the knowledge to teach these students. There are several elements to consider when training transgender students. These elements include the anatomical changes of masculinizing hormones on the body and voice, the anatomical changes of feminizing hormones on the body and voice, vocal exercises for both transfeminine and transmasculine students, how to choose …

Salome- Femme Fatale, Gaze And Rejection Of The Feminine, Ramya Thiyagarajan
Publications and Research
Salome was an unnamed, minor character in the New Testament of Mark and Matthew, an innocent girl who is presented as a pawn in her mother’s scheme to behead John the Baptist. Over time, Salome developed a life of her own, from being imagined as an acrobat in the Middle Ages, to a virgin beauty in the Renaissance and for Christians a constant example of evil woman. In 1891, Salome was reborn as the erotic femme fatale through the imagination of Oscar Wilde and given an existence on the stage, though the play was banned for years. Only after an …

Evaluating Ideasthesia As A Creative Tool In Compositional Practice: A Personal Reflection On Coloured Hearing Synesthesia, Suzanne Kosowitz
Theses : Honours
This research presents an evaluation of my compositional process with regard to synesthesia as a creative tool. Traditionally, the phenomenon of synesthesia has been discussed in perceptual terms, such as something that is seen visually elicits an additional experience in another sensory domain, such as sound. However, recent research has identified that there is an additional process involved in creating the secondary sensory experience, which is a semantic representation of concepts (ideasthesia). Specifically, my research considers ideasthesia in combination with a personal reflection on coloured hearing to provide a retrospective analysis of one of my compositions, Dance in Defiance (2012) …

Music Therapy For Addressing Impulsivity Among Children And Adolescents : A Scoping Review Of The Literature, Peeraya Saion
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Impulsivity is a major symptom of several emotional and behavioral disorders that affect children and adolescents. Uncontrolled impulsivity can hinder normal development in many different areas, making it important to find proper interventions to address impulsive behaviors. Music therapy has been considered an effective approach to managing impulsivity, and a comprehensive review of relevant articles can guide the profession and promote the expanded application of music therapy to address impulsive behavioral issues. Thus, this paper aims to identify the characteristics of studies that have investigated the use of music therapy for addressing impulsivity in children and adolescents. A scoping review …

Youth Musicians’ Executive Functioning And Its Impact On Emotional And Behavioral Health, Michael A. Tate
Dissertations and Theses
A growing body of neuroscience literature shows that music promotes brain development, as learning a music instrument involves multiple brain regions and neurocognitive systems. In partnership with a non-profit organization with a mission to strengthen New York City communities through music education programs, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of music training on children’s executive functioning (EF), as well as emotional and behavioral outcomes. We hypothesized that (i) children’s EF would develop more rapidly with exposure to the program; (ii) the intensity of practice would be associated with rate of growth of children’s EF, emotion regulation and behavior; (iii) …
