Minority Identity As German Identity In Conscious Rap And Gangsta Rap: Pushing The Margins, Redefining The Center, Kathrin M. Bower 2011 University of Richmond

Minority Identity As German Identity In Conscious Rap And Gangsta Rap: Pushing The Margins, Redefining The Center, Kathrin M. Bower

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

After rap entered the German music scene in the 1980s, it developed into a variety of styles that reflect Germany's increasingly multiethnic social fabric. Politically conscious rap assumed greater relevance after unification, focusing on issues of discrimination, integration, and xenophobia. Gangsta rap, with its emphasis on street conflict and violence, brought the ghetto to Germany and sparked debates about the condition of German cities and the erosion of civic consciousness. Alternately celebrated and reviled by the media, both styles utilize rap's synthesis of authenticity and performance to redefine the relationship between minority identity and German identity and debunk Leitkultur.

Self-Efficacy In Music Performance: Measuring The Sources Among Secondary School Music Students, Michael S. Zelenak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a greater understanding of self-efficacy in music performance. I sought to (a) contribute to fundamental knowledge of self-efficacy in music performance, (b) determine whether scores from the Music Performance Self-Efficacy Scale (MPSES) were valid and reliable, and (c) provide insights for developing self-efficacy among secondary school music students. Participants (N = 290) were middle and high school students in band, chorus, and string orchestra ensembles from 10 schools in the southeast and western regions of the United States. Participants completed four online questionnaires: (a) Music Performance Self-Efficacy Scale, (b) Sources of Middle …

Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery 2011 University of Mississippi

Chorister Formation Preferences In A Women's Choir, Janna Montgomery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While conductors and audience members are not committed to a single formation, choristers have a clear preference: sectional or mixed. Why is this? Participants in this study included forty-six members of an auditioned women's choir from a large southern university who completed a survey after singing in sectional and mixed formation. These SSAA results maintain previous research findings by James Daugherty, Debra Atkinson, and Christopher Aspaas, et al. from female choristers in SATB settings: most women prefer mixed formation. All 46 of the participants (100%) perceived that formation generally affects the choral sound, so they think formation is important. Women's …

Six Japanese Gardens And Trois Rivières: Delta: An Analysis Of Kaija Saariaho’S Two Major Works For Solo Percussion And Electronics, Bradley Edward Meyer

Theses and Dissertations--Music

Music for solo multiple-percussion (“multi-percussion”) has been rapidly developing in terms of quantity of and creativity exhibited within works since this genre was established in the late 1950s. It is important to underscore, analyze, and question the music of composers who have helped further multi-percussion towards the highest level of musical excellence possible as the genre continues to expand and mature. Finnish-born composer Kaija Saairaho has achieved international fame and success with her acoustic, electronic, and electro-acoustic (the simultaneous combination of electronic and acoustic elements) compositions. She has a large body of musical works, including two compositions for solo percussionist …

Proposed Methods For Efficiently Attaining The Skills Required For Accurate Time Keeping In Music, Ben Falle 2011 Edith Cowan University

Proposed Methods For Efficiently Attaining The Skills Required For Accurate Time Keeping In Music, Ben Falle

Theses : Honours

This dissertation aims to provide exercises that will efficiently develop the skills necessary for accurate time keeping in music. Many contemporary industry-standard texts fail to provide specific methods to develop accurate time keeping in music. Most include instructions to use a metronome, but only as a dictator of tempo and not as a tool to improve one's own time keeping ability. This dissertation proposes to address that gap in contemporary music instructional literature. To enhance the understanding of the skills required for accurate time keeping in music, contemporary neurological literature pertaining to time keeping is investigated. A review of this …

A Discussion Into The Careers Of James Houlik And Andy Scott With Regards To Identifying The Vital Steps Needed To Establish A Performance Career As A Specialist Classical Tenor Saxophonist, Erin Royer 2011 Edith Cowan University

A Discussion Into The Careers Of James Houlik And Andy Scott With Regards To Identifying The Vital Steps Needed To Establish A Performance Career As A Specialist Classical Tenor Saxophonist, Erin Royer

Theses : Honours

This paper will discuss the careers of two iconic saxophonists - James Houlik (USA) and Andy Scott (UK) - and how they have established performance careers in the classical tenor saxophone arena. Both of these saxophonists appeared to have contributed immensely to the classical tenor saxophone repertoire and pedagogy - possibly more than any other in their field - as well as enhancing its profile as a specialist instrument. Due to the relatively small number of virtuosic classical performers on the tenor saxophone1, I felt it was important to gain an insight into the important steps that both Houlik and …

Detroit Blues Women, Michael Duggan Murphy

Wayne State University Dissertations

ABSTRACT

DETROIT BLUES WOMEN

by

Michael Duggan Murphy

August 2011

Advisor: Dr. John J. Bukowczyk

Major: History

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

"Detroit Blues Women" explores how African American "women's blues" survived the twentieth century relatively unscripted by the image-makers of the male-dominated music industry. In the 1920s, African American blues queens laid out a foundation for assertive and rebellious women's blues that the many musical heirs who succeeded them in the twentieth century and into the first decade of the twenty first century sustained, preserved and built upon. The dissertation argues that women's blues, which encouraged women to liberate themselves …
