The Development Of Musical Improvisation In Second Grade Children, Akiko Yoshizawa
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate if second-grade children could develop a solo improvisation on an Orff xylophone. Participants were five African-American children who attended a model school that followed an inquiry-based approach curriculum. These children also had a chance to learn music from a faculty and the researcher, who had been exploring constructivist methods of teaching music, with a special emphasis on invented songs, instruments, and notations. The three-day study focused on how children were able to create a solo improvisation. The study was guided by the following questions: (1) Can second grade children develop …

Bad Reputations: A Discussion Of Gender Norms And Personas Created And Performed In Courtly (And Not So Courtly) Lyrics, Rebecca Ann Bohnet
Honors Program Theses
From 1000 CE to 1250 CE in Occitan, a literary tradition developed in the culture of the nobility and the courts. The courtly lyric tradition grew out of a unique cultural setting that allowed for the growth of a group of poets known as troubadours to write their courtly love lyrics in praise of the idealized lover. These were performed at the courts for the nobility as a source of entertainment and dealt with themes of angst, jealousy, and of course, love, among others. These troubadours produced a large number of works, in a wide range of genres, such as …

Design And Aesthetic In Debussy's Music: The Premiere Rapsodie For Clarinet And Piano, Samatha K. Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In Claude Debussy's Premiere rapsodie for clarinet and piano, the composer is beyond the realm of "music just for listening", but has become a designer, an architect of musical structure. During the early 1900s, Debussy began to develop a different Paris, France, was a cosmopolitan city in the early 1880s and on into the outlook for his compositions. La mer (1903-1905), a piece for orchestra, begins to exhibit Debussy's new focus on and compositional purpose of design and structure during his late career. The Premiere rapsodie, written from December 1909 to January 1910, is an example of this late …

Brotherly Love: Homosociality And Black Masculinity In Gangsta Rap Music., Matthew Oware
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
Hip hop, specifically gangsta rap music, reflects a stereotypical black masculine aesthetic. The notion of a strong black male--irreverent, angry, defiant and many times violent--is pervasive in gangsta rap music. This badman trope, as characterized by Robin Kelley (1996), oftentimes encompasses hypermasculinity, misogyny, and homophobia. It should come as no surprise that this genre of rap music is rife with sexist themes and lyrics. Yet, what has not been fully explored are the progressive ways that male rappers express themselves towards others considered comrades or "homies." Homosociality (Bird 1996; Sedgwick 1995), non-sexual positive social bonds, exists in gangsta …

LSU Master's Theses
The purpose of this study is to stimulate the dissemination of Brazilian choral repertoire, especially the pieces from the series Brazilian Music for Youth Choir by FUNARTE, and provide accurate interpretative information for authentic performance and effective teaching. In addition, ethnographic interview were held with the composers of each of those pieces, Paulo Malaguti, Leandro Maia, and Caio Senna, and the technical-pedagogical coordinator of the series, Eduardo Lakschevitz. Through the interviews with the composers it …
