Sex And Laughter In Women's Music, 1970-77, Sarah Dougher

The women's music movement of the early 1970's was created by and for women who came to political consciousness as a result of the women's liberation movement. The music culture that emerged was originally called "lesbian music", but later gained the less controversial descriptor "women's music". Outside of this music movement music produced during this period rarely made explicit links with emerging feminist consciousness.What differentiated "women's music" from other music made by women of the period was its lesbian focus (in both lyrics and performance contexts). Women's music was created for a lesbian audience to describe lesbian experiences and desires. …

Douçaine Vivant: The Life, Death, And Resurrection Of A Cylindrical Survivor, Aage Bent Nielsen

Thirty years ago, ocean archaeologists excavating the sunken wreck of the Tudor flagship the Mary Rose uncovered a “mystery instrument,” later revealed as the only extant douçaine. This exciting discovery catalyzed this work and a new career direction for the author. The douçaine is a cylindrical bored early double reed instrument mentioned frequently in literature and chronicles from the thirteenth to early seventeenth centuries. Unfortunately, none of the known references included a definitive description or iconographical depiction. Despite the emergence of the extant douçaine, relatively little scholarship exists on the instrument. Furthermore, only one contemporary instrument maker uses the extant …

This project explicates the nature of the rhetorical strategies, especially the call response, used by various African American artists and orators (Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and Public Enemy). The techniques include the interplay of repetition and heightening emotion provided especially through 1. using the “call response” directly, 2. announcing jeremiad warnings and rallying cries, and 3. using potent images to arouse emotions—the objective correlative.

The Vietnam War and subsequent protest movement remains one of the most tumultuous times in U.S. history. This thesis is an attempt to define and describe the protest movement as well as the varied popular protest songs that came from this era. Building on a previous study written by Elizabeth Kizer, this thesis creates sub-categories in which the protest music falls into.

The first two chapters of this study help by giving historical context to the songs by describing the Vietnam War and then the protest movement in the U.S. The final chapter then deals with popular protest songs that …

The purpose of this thesis is to examine Howard Hanson's composition, Dies Natalis for Band, from both an analytical and an educational perspective. To accomplish this objective, research on Hanson's personal and professional development as a composer, teacher, advocator, and otherwise contributor to the field of music was executed, information on and within Dies Natalis for Band was investigated, and suggestions were made for educational techniques to employ when teaching this composition. The author suggests that more analysis using Hanson's own theoretical system on intervallic relationships may yield additional information on his thought processes in composition. Influenced by the history and compositional techniques of shape note singing, the composition is a tribute to the past and current Sacred Harp singing conventions nationwide and the exuberance expressed within the shape note tradition. This thesis will investigate "The Sun Paints Rainbows on the Vast Waves" by David Bedford with consideration given to analysis of the work itself, historical perspectives, and educational conceptions. The work was commissioned by the Huddersfield Festival of Contemporary Music with additional financial assistance provided by the Hinrichsen foundation. Composed between June and August of 1982, this is the first piece by Bedford in the wind band medium. Timothy Rice is concerned that ethnomusicology—field, discipline, area of study, constellation of diverse musico-intellectual pursuits—has some “serious problems.” It seems that we have either not been reading each other’s work, or not engaging with it sufficiently. Opportunities to develop some “theoretical muscle” have been missed. Specifically, some seventeen articles broaching the favorite theme of music and identity published in this journal between 1982 and 2005 failed to proceed in cumulative fashion. Rice wants to see ethnomusicology “grow in intellectual and explanatory power,” but this will not happen if subsequent writers refuse to engage their predecessors at a theoretical level. A …

Johannes Brahms (1883-1897) originally planned to retire from composing after completing his String Quintet in G Major ("Prater"), Op. 111. However, his mind was quickly changed after being inspired by the performances of Meiningen clarinetist Richard Miihlfeld (1859-1907). Brahms enjoyed Miihlfeld's interpretation of the Weber's clarinet works, especially the Quintet, and was impressed by his ability to move easily between the different registers of the instrument. Because of the way Miihlfeld inspired him, Brahms was able to produce the Clarinet Quintet, the Clarinet Trio, and two Clarinet Sonatas, all of which have become a vital part of the instrument's repertoire. …

This dissertation aims to bring to light, and to categorise, the music for trumpet and cornetto contained in the great manuscript collection at Uppsala University, the so-called Düben collection. The dissertation will divide into four clear sections. After an introductory chapter on the Düben collection itself, chapter two will give an overview of the trumpet and cornetto music contained therein. In recent years, much debate has ensued regarding the level of consideration that should be given to the historical context of musical compositions that were written and performed during the Baroque era, which extends from 1600 to 1750 CE. The question arises as to how closely we should strive to emulate the performance conditions that would have been present during the Baroque era. Italy had been the theatre of war for centuries. Political fragmentation ignited dynastic rivalries, carving out powerful autonomous city-states whose leaders amassed within their courts artists, musicians and writers in order to chronicle their military, religious and political vision. The musical depictions of particular military exploits, or battaglia, became popular springboards for colourful, programmatic compositions. These works were often performed in public in order to garner support for campaigns.
