Letter, 8 January 1865, from Jonathan Wood, Smithfield, Pennsylvania, to his son, Union soldier Pliny Wood. He writes with sympathy for the soldiers’ hardships, instructs him on saving postage, criticizes the privileges of congressmen, expresses contempt for the treason of Jefferson Davis and the Confederates, and remarks on the suffering of prisoners of war at Andersonville, Georgia; nevertheless, he hopes for reconciliation with ordinary Southerners after their defeat and repentance.

In 1913, two women made history when they testified before the all-white, all-male jury of the Superior Court of Yavapai County in the State of Arizona v. Juan Fernandez murder trial. Mary Woolsey, an elderly Yavapai widow, and Dolores Rodriguez, a Mexican single mother of three, established the legal precedent for allowing non-English-speaking, non-citizen women to testify in state courts in Arizona when many other western states still did not grant such privileges to indigenous residents. Woolsey and Rodriguez showed that Arizona's indigenous population were competent, if somewhat problematic, members of Arizona's body politic, and their historic involvement in the …

In 1732 Charles Carroll of Maryland received a grant of 5000 acres of land in present Adams County, Pennsylvania, from the authorities of Maryland. Soon after, a survey of that land, known as “Carroll’s Tract” or “Carroll’s Delight,” was conducted. At that point in time there was still some dispute over the location of the boundary between the two states. A temporary line was agreed upon in 1739, and a more permanent line (very near that temporary boundary) was surveyed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon during the 1760s. Because the existing records are sporadic, some of the lots were more difficult to research than others and will require further research at some future time. This was anticipated going into the project. But it is hoped that this study will provide a foundation for that future research. An historical portrait of the Reverend L. Francis Griffin's leadership in the Civil Rights Movement. In the summer of 1963 demand for equality and for an end to racial segregation brought a series of protests to Farmville, Virginia, the county seat of Prince Edward County. The protests were organized and led by the Rev. L. Francis Griffin, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Farmville. They called their summer of protests a “Program of Action.”
