Race Before Nation: African American Activists And Their Response To The War In Vietnam, Nicholas L. Busby

Grand Valley Journal of History

The escalation of America’s war in Vietnam coincided with the culmination of the long-fought civil rights movement. Most, if not all, Black leaders voiced opposition to the Vietnam War before the end of the 1960s. However, it was the racially disproportionate statistics in the military in the early years of the conflict to activists fracture within the movement. Regardless of when individual Black leaders spoke out, what they specifically spoke out against, and how radically they voiced opposition, Black leaders put race before nation when voicing an opinion on Vietnam.

Unraveling The Geographies Of The U.S. Public Education System: An Analysis Of Scale, Segregation, And Hegemony, Olivia Ildefonso

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Other than one or two studies that focus on specific state-wide systems of public education, there has been no accounting for how the U.S. public education system came about in relation to space and scale. My dissertation research seeks to fill in this gap. Through focusing on the development of public education in the North and the South, I provide a foundation for understanding the grounded and contested processes of scale production that largely determined the U.S. public education system’s design and function.

As academic institutions and archivists around the nation grapple with the question of how to address existing monuments to racist histories at their institutions, how can archivists support the creation of new monuments on college and university campuses that reflect suppressed or oppressed histories of people of color? Finding aid and scan (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3629. “A list of hands to be allotted on the road from Wm R Paynes mill to the Nashville Road at Abner Evins’s on a direction to Warren Court House.” The February 1812 document lists the names of 37 citizens assigned to the work, with an “order to warn all such persons as are not on this list who are living within two miles of sd Road and not allotted on other Roads.”

Letter, 11 March 1920, to her friend “Mabel” (suffragist Mabel Vernon?) from author, reformer and activist Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Arlington, Vermont. She reports on seeing mutual friends at a speaking engagement but expresses an unwillingness to accept further invitations in favor of home life and a “big piece of work” she has recently undertaken. She also refers to her three-year residence in France, which put her out of touch with news at home.

Includes an honorable discharge (mutilated) issued to Wilson.
