Women and war have existed in history since the beginning of time. Yet in most modern historical accounts, women’s participation and significance in war conflicts is not present or is severely undermined. Often the conflict itself is presented to fit an agenda of the presenter or contributor. In modern American history, students are presented with a Pilgrim thanksgiving dinner with the Algonquin and then it fast forwards roughly 100 years to the American Revolution. The Politics Of Waves: A Transnational And Cultural Surfing History Of Popoyo, Nicaragua, Jason R. Old

During the 1970s and 1980s, as surfers were carving out new international surf spaces around the globe, Nicaragua was on a much different trajectory—one that engendered the Sandinista guerrilla insurgency that deposed a four-decade-long, US-backed dictatorship in 1979. In response, the United States waged a decade-long, low-intensity counterinsurgency against the Sandinista government. While other surfing destinations were growing in popularity, notably neighboring Costa Rica, Nicaragua was, by most accounts, considered off-limits due to the conflict. In 1990, a watershed moment fostered an environment conducive to international tourism and foreign investment. The election of Violeta Barrios Torres de Chamorro ushered in …

A Note for Students and Teachers: This overview essay should be read before embarking on projects dealing with primary source material on Rhode Island in the Gag Rule. The essay, which includes digital primary and secondary source material in the footnotes for students and teachers, details the national debate over the abolitionist mailings and petitions in the mid-1830s in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. Underground Iowans is a project undertaken by myself and two other undergraduate students (under Prof. Thomas Connors's guidance) to catalog the graves of notable people buried around the state. This geodatabase will be developed as an app allowing Iowans and tourists to locate the graves and learn more about those who contributed to Iowa's history. Individuals cataloged include political leaders, writers, actors, musicians, Medal of Honor recipients, and Tuskegee airmen, among many others. This free app identifies hundreds of mainly unknown historic sites found in every part of the state.
